Bates (or Beats), Ann. Teacher, storekeeper, British spy.
Philadelphia resident; wife of British soldier; spied for British, apparently with great effectiveness, 1778-1781; made repeated trips into Washington's army at White Plains and on the march, 1778, posing as a peddler and gathering detailed military data.
