Sorry, Bruce, but I don't. I have four Samuels, born in the 17th and 18th centuries in Hingham, MA and Dudley, MA. I can tell you this, though; I'm fairly certain your Samuel probably descends from Clement Bates (1594-1671) of Lydd, Kent, England and Hingham, Masschusetts. He was one of the founders of Hingham, in 1635, and most of the Bateses of Masschusetts are descended from either him or his brother James.

Hi Mr. Meagley,

I am not 100% sure that we are interested in the same Augustus BATES. Does all of the informtion I had in my posting fit with the description of "your" Augustus Bates? (Actually, he really isn't "mine" in a genealogical sense. His brother Walter Bates married the sister of one of my ancestors.) Your BATES seems to have stayed in the USA far longer than a loyalist would have permitted by his patriot neighbours.

A Mr. Menno Stoffels read my posting over a year ago and generously sent me digital copies of papers having to do with the Augustus Bates who was a native of Stamford CT, became a loyalist, and moved to Ontario where he became a postmaster. I think he would be better able to answer your questions. Please contact me at "stephendavids AT gmail.com", and I will introduce you to him.

Yours,
Stephen Davidson

Mr Davidson

I just noticed this posting from a few years ago. I am interested in Augustus Bates, because I think he lived during 1790s in my hometown area in NY State (present day Village of Hobart, Town of Stamford, Delaware County, NY). I recently learned that Augustus moved to Canada about 1800. During 1790s, he was active in establishment of the St Peter's Episcopal Church, but his name disappears after 1799. He likely moved into this area (with brother William Bates) in late 1780s - when locality was called Painesdale (and also "The Mills"), due to mills on the Delaware River, operated by Ezra Paine...at this time, it was also partly in Town of Harpersfield (Delaware River was a boundary line). I will send this note, to see if your e-mail contact is still the same....I am interested in your reference to Bates Family Papers, focusing on Augustus..

Jim Meagley
Buffalo, NY

Re: Parentage of Elder Francis Bates RI to Pownal, VT (1727-1803)

Hi Jane,
I remember the name Rhoda Larrabee from some time ago in my research, but there is something confusing about all of this. I know the Larrabees were an old Pownal family. But Francis born 03-08-1759, son of Francis and Elizabeth, was married to Martha Bacon, as recorded in Berkshire Geneaological Notes #3-Marriages in Pownal to 1850 from Books #1 and #2 of the Town Records. They were married Oct 21, 1779. Francis never remarried--his Rev. war records tell us his wife was Martha, and this is what his known descendants who have submitted information to the Bates Family Bulletin have documented.

Mary Birge (Burgess) and Francis Bates did have a son Francis, who is my ancestor. His wife was also named Mary, but her last name is unknown. It was their son Francis who moved to Pownal with wife Elizabeth Bissell Bates, so you missed a generation or your ancestor was a different child of Francis Bates and Mary Birge. This could be quite possible.

Stephen Bates Sr.,son of Francis and Elizabeth Bates from Pownal, married three times and had all but one of his children with Phebe Nichols. First son James was born to an unknown first wife, and third wife he married after Phebe died in his later years. His family is extremely well-documented because of a will and Bible records. There is definitely not a Rhoda--his only child of the unknown first wife was named James. There is a son Francis, born according to the Bible record on 01 Feb 1798.

So your Francis Bates born 1779 and married to Phebe comes from a different line than Francis and Elizabeth Bates in Pownal.

Pownal census does have two different Francis Bates's listed in the 1790 census. It is not clear if this was a census error or if there actually were two Francis Bates's. If there were two, this could be the Francis married to Phebe.

I will contact Sandy Bates, president of the Bates Family Association, and ask her about Rhoda Larrabee.

Howard

Hi Jane,
I think it is possible that this is your ancestor. However, Francis's wife's name was Martha Bacon, not Phebe. His mother's name was Phebe. Francis and Martha had an unknown child in 1780, Calebl in 1781, John (!) in about 1782, and Samuel in 1783. So Welcome Olney might be the unknown child. Do you have her date of birth, or approximate date of birth?

By the way, I have a ggggrandfather named Olney Harrington, from my mother's side of the family (Bates is my father's side, but my parents have geographically very similar backgrounds). I know that the Bates and Harrington families frequently intermarried.

I hope this helps--perhaps studying the Harrington family line could help you get a handle on this, and it may be that Welcome Olney is the missing sibling!

Good luck
Howard Snooks
Boulder, CO

(George)Albert's son, John Leslie Bates, was my father. Your husband and I definitely are cousins! Wasn't William a dentist?

I have very little information on any relatives on the Bates side, so would be VERY interested to learn what you have.
Hi. I am a descendent of Elizabeth and Richard Alfred Bates - at least by marriage. Their son, Arthur, was my great grandfather.

Prior to marrying Richard Alfred in 1890, Elizabeth was married to Thomas Bradley. He died in Nanaimo in 1889. They had two children: Arthur and Frank.

I am most interested in learning more about Richard and Elizabeth (in particular, the latter). I have found very little information - I do know that she re-married after R.A. Bates died (ca. 1900).

Jay Bradley
Victoria, BC

Re: Robert Bates Norfolk England

Hello,

I saw your old post, and am hoping that your email is still valid. I descend from a John Bates born app 1787 possibly in Royden, Norfolk. Several of his relations used the surname Bateson as well, so Bates was probably just a shortened version. I believe John's parents to be a John Bateson (b. app 1759) and Mary Coldsey (b. app 1746). I do not know where John and Mary were married but they did baptise some children in Harpley, Norfolk in the 1790's and then they moved to Flitcham in the very early 1800's. I am wondering if there is a connection between our lines.

I also have a line of Blyth's. A Susan, daughter of William Blyth and Sarah Dextern of Burnham Sutton. I see you research Blyth's as well.

Hope to hear from you.

Tracy

Help please! Our great great grandmother was Susan C. Bates, she was the daughter of Eliza King. Susan married Abram T. Corey, together they lived in Hope, Hamilton County NY. They had a house full of children. Susan is buried in Hope Cemetery (what I think was once the Bass family cemetery) in Hope, Hamilton County, NY. Along with her is buried her son James A. (both headstones are incorrectly spelled to read Cory), her mother Eliza King is also buried there but has no stone. We know of the family Susan gave birth to but not of the family from whence she came. Can you help? Please email us at coreygenealogy@yahoo.com

Any information on Susan's line or extended family and photographs would be appreciated.

Thanks, Howard.

I have a Frances Bates, born Feb. 1779 married to Phebe A. His parents are Stephen Bates, Sr. and Rhoda. Stephen's parents are Francis (born 1727) and Elisabeth Bates. And Francis' parents are Francis Bates, Sr., who married Mary Birge. I don't see any Martha in what I've researched. Was she a second wife?

The Welcome Olney Bates in my line is a male, born in 1801, so he wouldn't be the unknown child of Francis and Martha. I wish he was! It would be great to get our Bates family history mystery solved!!!

We have other branches on my mother's side traced fairly far back - one of them all the way back to Saint Arnulf of Metz who was born around 582 AD. But we're stuck in 1801 on the Bates branch!

Thanks again!
Jane Betteridge
Anderson, IN

Greetings:

For many years now, my family has been unable to solve the mystery of the parents of our forebear, Welcome Olney Bates (1801-1868). Our research indicates that Welcome may have had a brother by the name of John. We think their parents may have been Francis (b.1779) and Phebe A. Bates, but we have been unable to confirm this.

We believe this mystery may exist due to a fire in Newport, RI which destroyed vital records.

Welcome married Ann Eliza James and they had Thomas James Bates, who is my maternal great-grandfather.

Can anyone provide me with additional research options that might shed light on our ancestral mystery?

Thanks, in advance, for any help rendered.
Jane Betteridge

First, let me apologize that my post is not in answer to your query, but rather is another query relative to this particular branch of the Bates family tree. I am researching in the opposite direction. I believe the grandson of Francis and Elisabeth, and son of Stephen Bates - one Francis Bates (married to Phebe A.), may be the father of Welcome Olney Bates and John Bates. This has been a research "wall" that my family has been unable to overcome. We cannot find record of the offspring of Francis and Phebe, nor the parentage of Welcome Olney Bates. We think this may be due to a fire in Newport, Rhode Island in which many records were destroyed.

If you have information that might be helpful in solving this mystery, we would be grateful to hear from you.

Thank you kindly,
Jane Betteridge

I will be passing it along to my mother and sister so that we can collectively evaluate the best way to move forward from here in trying to solve the mystery that has blocked our ability to get any further back in this one branch of our family tree. I think the Olney research suggestion is an excellent one and may be our best option.

Re: Parentage of Elder Francis Bates RI to Pownal, VT (1727-1803)

Hello Hoard and Jane:

Francis Bates Jr. is my ancester. His parents are Francis Bates (1727-1803) and Elizabeth Bissel.

Francis Jr. (1759 - 1824/25) married Martha Bacon and their first 3 children are the following:
a) Caleb B March 2, 1780
b) John B April 16, 1781
c) Samuel	B June 24, 1783
D) UNKNOWN
E) ? possible.

These 3 children are listed in the Town Clerk's records of Pownal. I have a copy of the page which lists these children and that Francis married Marth Bacon on October 21, 1779 in the First Baptist Church in Pownal VT. There was at least 1 more child but that name appears to be lost right now. There may have been more children but none are known at this time.

CALEB: There are no known relatives of Caleb posting. I have not located where he went, whom he married, what children he may have had or how and where he died. (OF NOTE: An 8 yr old grandson named Caleb is listed in Francis Jr.'s War Pension as living with he and his wife Martha.)

JOHN: John married Nancy Lewis on February 27, 1803 in Pownal, VT. They had at least the following 4 children:
a) Marvin
b) Andrew J.
c) Charlotte
d) Martha
I believe John & family wound up settling in Michigan where he passed away. A relative has posted his information on Ancestry.

SAMUEL: I believe, was married 3 times. I believe that his wives names, in order, were 1)Catherine, 2) Lydia and 3) Mary. I do not know their last names. Samuel had the following known children:
a) Catherine B in 1821 who married George Bigsby.
b) Frances A. B 7/20/1828, in New Lisbon, Otsego County, NY
Francis married Thersey Marie Brown. They moved to PA.
c) Abigail B in 1830 and married Henry Holdridge.
d) Julie Elma B 1833 and married Isaiah Blair
e) Benjamin H. B 1834
f) Beach who was B 1844	who I am not sure if Child or Nephew?
g) Martha B UNKNOWN and married Samuel Beach
h) Polly B UNKNOWN and married Anson Parks
i) Samuel Jr. B UNKNOWN and married Mary UNKNOWN
Samuel died on September 28, 1861 in Otsego Co, New York. He left a will naming most of the above. (OF NOTE: Daughter Polly left behind a photo album and has many photos of this family within it. It can be found in a library in Butternuts NY, I think.)

Unfortunetly Jane, there is no Olney seen anywhere in this family line to my knowledge. I would suggest that you reaseach under the Olney family to find a potential connection working down rather than up (backwards). The Olney family were very famous in Rhode Island and would have married into families such as the Harrington's, also from RI. I think there is a lot of research on the name. Your relative may very well be the Francis Bates listed in the Harrington will.

Howard, it is nice to hear you are still at it. Most of us owe so much to you and your tireless efforts. Perhaps Sandy at the Bates Association of MA will have something for Jane.

As you may recall, I do not believe the union with Francis Bates (1727-1803) and Elizabeth Harrington is correct as indicated by most researchers posted on line. Some of their research also indicates that their Francis died in Pownal, Vermont in 1816 not in 1803. (Could this be your man Jane?) Their research, does not agree with the information contained within, the Pownal Vermont local records nor those kept by the Bennington County Library or Mormon's research and more. Undoubtably, most seem to have merely copied such information without doing any research.

I know there is another Francis Bates indicated on the 1790 Federal Census information (you mentioned) in the same location as our Francis Bates and the identity of this individual is, at this time, I belive to be still unresolved.

Father & Son entries are as follows:

{Father Francis Bates is listed on Roll 12 Book 1, Page 9 – Center Column, 6th from top - along with his sons Stephen and Daniel} The household information matches.

{Francis Bates jr. (there was only 1 - is listed on Roll 12 Book 1, Page 10 – Third column, 8th from top next to neighboor Williams.} The household information matches.

I have to take a look and view the 2nd entry. From my memory the household information was the same as Francis Jr.

If not a double entry (census takers were paid by the amount of names they recorded) then he may be the man in the will cited by many researchers. Unfortunetly, their research mistakenly connects that line with ours on a very tenious thread of unsupported judgement or a guess, without any supporting sources. Alot of the postings on the web are unfortunately copies of this and a flat out error in judgement,my opinion, based upon the weight of evidence. At this time there is no clear indication that these gentlemen are one in the same man. With the aforesaid in mind, the suggested union with Elizabeth Harrington must still be given some consideration as a remote possibility as either a 1st or second wife until more firmly proven or disproven. The overwhelming weight of the information is all for Bissel and none for Ms. Harrington at this time. We may never be 100% sure.

The name Francis was very commonly used within this family and parallel family lines. Certainly, the existence of a cousin with the same name, at the same place and time, is a very good possibility. (I once talked with an individual who said he had evidence of their being 2 but he never sent me anything to prove that. Evidence may still be out there.)

The Bates family, as well as others closely related through marriage and business, traveled west together in a predictable pattern with occasional off shoots from the main stream. The main stream flows from Massachusetts into Rhode Island, then into Vermont. From Vermont the migrations went westward into New York State and split up into mainly the counties of Erie, Otsego and Montgomery. From there the main stream migration enters the State of Michigan (including some of the previous off shoots from New York into other states)into the counties of Barry, Branch, Lenawee, and Otsego (yes there is one there too) and also the States of Iowa and Illinois. I hear some of the best of them ended up in Colorado from Michigan.

My family line is an off shoot from those that traveled to Otsego County, New York, then went into Susquehanna & Lackawanna Counties, in Pennsylvania.

Regards

Jerry

Very interesting and a I think not far from a possibility when one thinks about it. You should also consider the views of his religion that may have forbade same but intellectuals dare where frightened men do not. To work with those indians was brave and he may have been an elightened sole who saw things much differently than others around him.

The Jane Gray incident sent chills through all in the Vermont area. There would have been a lot of lingering hatred in the hearts of many, except for a true man of God.

Keep my eyes open for you Bruce. You still playing on LBI?.

Jerry Levans

Hello

My Great Grandmother was Julia Ella Bates (b. 1887 in Henrico, Virginia). In various census records her mother is cited as being a slave from Tennessee. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find her mother or father's name anywhere. There may be a connection. However, without any family information to go on, it's been difficult to trace.

Would you also be related to the Bates of Tennessee. My gggrandfather was George. He lived in Cornersville in 1810. Married hs first wife's sister after she passed. They had about 16 children then he had 5 with the second wife but I think one of the 5 died young. Let me know if we're related.

Walter B. Bates and Ruby Grace George

I would appreciate any information on Walter B. Bates. He was married in the 1940s to Ruby Grace George. She is buried in Sunrise Memorial Cemetery in Vallejo, California. There are other Bates there, but not Walter B. A notice in the newspaper after Ruby Grace's death, refers to her as Mrs. Walter B. Bates, so feel fairly sure that B. was his middle initial. I have no DOB or DOD for Walter. Judging from Ruby Grace's age, I would assume Walter Bates was born around 1900 - give or take a few years. At the time of Ruby Grace's death, the article said Walter lived in Napa, California. Thanks for any help!
Carolyn Lamberth Johnson
hookemlrj@suddenlink.net
