Margaret Jane BATEY was born around 1855, perhaps in Newcastle upon Tyne (since I've found a potential match for her in the FreeBMD indexes).

She married Richard EMMERSON - possibly in Sunderland in 1873 (another potential match found in FreeBMD).

At some stage they came to New Zealand, and they had at least three children, two of which died in infancy.

Their son Thomas Emmerson married my great-great-aunt, Louisa Florence HOWARD, in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1900. They had at least one child, a son named Joseph Henry Emmerson.

I would love to hear from anyone with connections to any of these names.

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
--
Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wendyh65/

Bateys in Patchogue NY

I'm looking for descendants of Thomas and Mary (Crowell) Batey (b. 1854 Long Island) who had children Helen (m. a Mr. Bishop), Roscoe Hatheway (b. 1879), Retta (m. Wm. Hibbard), Francis, and Clara, all born in Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, NY. Later 1800's and early 1900's found Roscoe, Francis and Clara in Patchogue, Suffolk, NY. I am descended from Roscoe and his wife Lillian Satterly. If you are connected to Bateys on Long Island and these names are not familiar to you, I would still love to compare notes with you to see if there may be a connection.

William Batey and Mariah Lou Franklin

Mariah Lou Franklin is a great-grand-aunt of mine and I'm trying to find more descendants of her. She married a William Batey in Illinois in the mid-1800's.

Here's the info I have on them and their descendants to date:
Descendants of William H. Batey

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM H.2 BATEY (GEORGE W.1 BATY, SR.) was born 23 Jan 1836 in Pope Co., Illinois, and died 02 Jul 1918 in Golconda, Pope Co., Illinois. He married MARIAH LOU FRANKLIN 25 Feb 1869 in Johnson Co., Illinois, daughter of ANGEREAU FRANKLIN and LUCINDA STEPHENS. She was born Mar 1849 in Crittenden Co., Kentucky, and died 08 Jun 1927 in Golconda, Pope Co., Illinois.

Notes for WILLIAM H. BATEY: !MISC: Husband's name from article in "Crittenden Press" (of Marion, Kentucky) in 1880.

!1830 CENSUS: Warren Co., Illinois, pg 1 of 4, William Batey, 1 male between the ages of 10-15, 1 male between the ages of 30-39, 1 female between the ages of under 5 years, 1 female between the ages of 5-9, 1 female between the ages of 20-29. Don't know if this is "our" William H's father perhaps.

!1850 CENSUS: Franklin Co., Illinois, pg 7 of 136, line 23, house 50: James C. Batey (31, farmer), William J. (11), Wesly (9), Frances (7), Reuben (5), Richard (4), Elizabeth (3), William A. Batey (17), George Batey (7), Nancy (20), Martha Batey (18), Temperance Batey (14), Emma Batey (12). Looks like 2 Batey families merged! William A. would have been born in 1833--it's possible that this might have actually been William H., but there's no proof.

!1850 CENSUS: Sangamon Co., Illinois, pg 289 of 348, line 3, house 1971, family 1971: William Beaty (50, laborer), Eliza (47), Jane (10), Louisa (7). Living next door: Joseph Beaty (41, laborer), Nancy (41), Mary (17), Eliza (15), William (12), Nancy (8), Joseph (6), Sophronia (1). Again, not sure if this is "our" William H.

!1860 CENSUS: Pope Co., Illinois, Township 13-S Range 5-E, pg 20 of 28, line 3, house 338, family 337: Malinda Modglin (age 52, farmer), William H. Beaty (22), George W. Beaty (21), Candia H. Beaty (15). Oct 1856 in Pope Co., Illinois, and Melinda Hazel (b. 1803, Pope Co., Illinois and died 1860 in Pope Co., Illinois. They were married 11 Aug 1823 in Pope Co., Illinois.)

!1870 CENSUS: Johnson Co., Illinois, Township 13, Range 4, pg 7 of 33, line 18, house 49, family 49: Margret Corum (28, keeping house), Willie (7), Lora (2), Palina Franklin (21), William Batey (34, farmer), Maria (18, keeping house), Cora (8), Winnonia (6/12), Benjamin Franklin (4).

!1900 CENSUS: Pope Co., Illinois, Webster, District 66, pg 5 of 21, line 75, house 36, family 37: William H. Batey (62, b. Jan 1838, occupation farmer), Maria L. (51, b. Mar 1849, wife), Willie S. (16, b. Dec 1883, son), Charles A. (11, b. Batey (73, farmer), Mariah (60), Almus (21, son), Della (23, daughter-in-law), Bela (11/12, granddaughter). Living right next door is: William S. Batey (26, farm laborer), Anna (20), Ruth Lenly [or Henly-hard to read] (10, adopted daughter).

!MISC: 10/2/92-Husband's name from article in "Crittenden Press" (newspaper in Marion, Kentucky) in 1880.

Marriage Notes for WILLIAM BATEY and MARIAH FRANKLIN:
Marriage date from book "Johnson County, Illinois Early Marriages, 1834-1877, Vol. 1", published 1992, authors Carolyn Cromeenes Foss & Judy Foreman Lee.

Children of WILLIAM BATEY and MARIAH FRANKLIN are:
i. She married my grandfather Elzie and had 6 children. My mother, Delores, her oldest daughter, died May 23, 1997. Grandma died July 23, 2000. I would really like to be able to converse through e-mail or even by phone. I don't know how we will do this since you are having trouble with the e-mail.

It's great to know that you're still looking.

I have a little information on the BATEYs (I leave that side of the family to my brother). I'll share what little I have and then try to get copies of my brother's stuff. I would love to know what you have.

My Grandfather is Hugh Lee BATEY. His father was of course, Shelby Alloway (I've seen it Attaway as well) BATEY. He was born 12 Nov 1886, married 17 July 1910 and died 22 Feb 1935.
Shelby's Shelby's wife was Ida Bell SMITH.

Shelby's parents were William Riley BATEY. His birth is listed 21 July 1861 in Paulding GA. William married on 17 Jan 1884 at the home of J.S. Parker in Cherokee AL. His death date is 10 Jan 1939 in Cherokee AL. He's buried at Carmel Presbyterian in AL. (I have photos' somewhere of his tombstone.)

I have Shelby's mother listed as Samantha Alice McCOLLUM. She was born 5 Sept 1861 at Patton's Chapel in Calhoun Al. She died 15 Apr 1926 in Calhoun AL.

I have more information if you're interested. Like I side, I'm interested in filling in some gaps, like all of Shelby's children.

Just let me know if you would like more information.

Happy Hunting,
GenHunter

I have an interesting link to this family line. Hugh Beatty (of 1744)had a daughter named Elizabeth "Betsy" born 7/14/1778. She married Wm Sanders (b.1/23/1777). They had a son Argalus (b.4/5/1803). He married Sarah Lee Williams and they had a daughter named Judah Ann Permelia Sanders born 1850. Permelia married William Reynolds and had a daughter Nora born in 1871. Nora married George W. Bradshaw and had a daughter Lois Roma. Lois Roma was my grandmother and she married Clarence Shelby Batey. It turns out that Lois and Clarence were direct cousins removed by four generations. I'm not sure either ever knew.

Thanks. My family link is Clarence Shelby Batey born 1913. He is Hugh Lee's older brother. I also have William Riley Batey's father being a William Dixon Batey born Jan 7, 1811 in Ga. Wm Riley's mother is Martha J (unk) born 1812. I believe that Wm Dixon's father is Francis Jr born Feb 26, 1771 in NC and married to Patsy.
Previous generation is Hugh Beaty(spelling changed)born 1744 in NC. He was married to Margaret Houston born 1749. And his father is believed to be Francis Beatey/Beaty born 1711 in Ireland and married to Martha Mitchell born 1711 in Pennsylvania.
Clarence Shelby (of 1913) only had one child, my mother. I believe he died in 1961 or 1962.
What info do you have on Hugh Lee? I have that he married Esther Ginn.
Also, Ida Bell Smith is a dead end. Do you have info on her parents?

Bateys in New York

I am descended from a Thomas Batey of Brookhaven NY who lived there between 1870 and 1880ish. I don't know anything about him except his name from someone's family papers. He married Mary Crowell, and had children Retta, Ellen and or Helen, Roscoe, Frank, and Clara. If you have ties to, or information on, Bateys from Suffolk County, NY in the 1800's.....please I would love to know! And am willinf to share what I have if it's helpful.
