POW/MIA Korean War, BATSON

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier

Soldier:JAMES MARION BATSON
Born: 1929
Date of loss: Nov. 13, 1951 KIA
Home of Record: Los Angeles, Calif

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Anyway, I have information on the Transylvania Co., NC Batsons starting with William Asbury (Asbel) Batson who moved here from Travelers Rest, SC. By the way, I live in Transylvania County close to W.A. Batson's land.

I am searching for my connection to Barbados. Stories within my family always mentioned Barbados, but I have had no luck in finding the link.

My GGGF, Archibald Smitten b 1780 in Scotland and migrated to the US. He died in 1856 in Pennsylvania. There was also an Edward Smitten in Pennsylvania in the 1930s census, but have yet to determine their relationship - possibly brothers I think.

Any help you can provide to the link I would greatly appreciate it.

Smitten Family

Tom, just saw your post. This is the info I have on Abihu B. Batson -- is he the same as your Abihui brack Batson? The name, Abihu, is so unusual, surely there is a relationship. A few points are a bit iffy, but I'm pretty confident on most of it.

Father of Abihu B.
Hi - I'm the grandson of a Batson. I live in Succasunna, formerly part of Flanders, NJ. My grandmother was Zada Batson (1902-1997), daughter of Leber Batson (1872-1963), son of Aaron Batson (1838-1893), son of Lewis Batson (1811-1893), son of James Batson (1786-1872).

I have a somewhat extensive genealogy containing many Morris County Batson descendants, including a Clarence (b. 1897). I have no wife or descendants for him, but I have a few generations of his ancestors.

I'm wondering if I have the Clarence mentioned here. Secondly, I'm wondering if you are nearby, and may be related to me in some way.

I'm in Morris County, doing some research on my mother's ancestor Batsons, and a document a relative gave me shows a Russell Batson, although his wife is not mentioned and no "Boomer" nickname. Some of the info is from an old family Bible.

This Russell I have (1897-1987) is son of Lewis Batson (1869-1933) and Lily Riker (1872-1959). His brothers and sisters are listed, and a short article of unknown origin that recounts an interview with Russell where as a 77 year old he reminisces about a song he would sing during his days on the Morris Canal when 13 years old.

Tell me about getting hooked on this hobby!

I started 36 years ago when I became engaged to my husband and have been researching on and off ever since. You might find that little obstacles like children and jobs and caring for parents and now the first grandchild is on the way etc sometimes take up some of your time, but hey the ancestors are not going anywhere are they? They are just there waiting to be discovered :o)

Checking out the baptisms in the parish records will give you the name at that time and you may be able to find the parents banns/marriage. But then once you begin to find out which parish church, you decided it would be nice to visit that church - so you begin to travel to ancestral villages and towns.

Lots of luck with your searches Sharynn,

SM ...

Every time I find an ancestor, I find two more
www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk
Hi Sharynn

Just thought I would say that my grandfather was a first child and was born in 1896 (he died in 1991) the only boy in a large family, his sisters have all lived to a wonderful age - he has a sister still living age 102 and another, the baby of the family, born in the 1920s when great granny was 52 years of age!!! Always known in the family as 'a change baby'. Apparently not uncommon back in the day for women of a certain age to be caught out, thinking they had started the menopause and in fact had fallen pregnant.

SM ...
It's been some time since your post, but I thought you might be interested to know that Seletha Ann Sewell was the sister (or perhaps half sister) of my gggrandmother, Mary Eleanor Sewell. Their father, William Abihue Sewell, was quite colorful, the father of perhaps 15 or more children. You'll find him listed in Georgia's Black Book.

Interestingly, my research shows that Seletha's younger sister, Mary Eleanor Sewell, married George Washington Batson, apparently a younger brother of Nathan (Seletha's husband).

GW is a Civil War vet and I recently learned that apparently Abihue served as private in War of 1812 with Jenkins' Regiment 2 GA Vols & Militia. I'm working on confirmation, but I think his father was a Revolutionary veteran.

Thought this might be of interest as much of the info I read online relates to generations that follow Nathan and Seletha.

Ms. Hunter,

Obviously, I am a bit late in reading your post. I am very interested in learning more about George Washington Batson and Mary Eleanor Sewell. They are the grandparents of my grandmother, Bessie Hester Batson. She was the daughter of their son, Andrew Jackson Batson.

I'm just beginning my ancestry research and find it fascinating. While I have collected a good bit, I'm currently trying to untangle the marriages of Mary Eleanor's father, William Abihu Sewell. If you're willing, I'd love to hear more about your findings.

By the way, I have a photo of the gravestone at the graves of GW and Mary if you are interested. Just let me know.

Best,
Susan

Birth certificates

Hello,
Please could someone tell me what information is contained on a birth certificate.
I know marriage certs contain fathers of bride/groom names so are invaluable on going back a generation but I dont want to spend a fortune ordering birth certs if they dont contain anything else.
I have got stuck and its to do with a maiden name.
My grandfather, Roy Batson, was 1 of 18 children. All his siblings have the name Jones listed as the mothers maiden name but my grandfather (and his twin sister eileen) have the name Yeomans.
They are the youngest of all the siblings and working out dates its seems that Kate Jones (who I believe to be the mother)would have been 47 when she had them. I'm now starting to doubt whether Kate was infact not my grandfathers mother but his grandmother.
I'm sooooooo confused. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
Sharynn

Hi Judy,
Thanks for the info. It certainly did cross my mind as to whether Kate died and John Thomas married again. I thought maybe I had missed a generation. Kate and John Thomas had a son in 1903 Clarence and it crossed my mind as to whether he could be Roy's father. When I work out the dates it does seem that Kate would be 47/48 years old when she had twins Roy and Eileen and that seems very old to be having children. I know in this day and age its more commonplace but at the turn of the century people were a lot older for their age (if that makes sense!!)
I think the best thing I could do would be to order Roy's birth certificate and take it from there. It is puzzling tho.
If Kate and John Thomas were Roy's parents, their children would be as follows-
1901 WINIFRED
1903 CLARENCE
1904 ALICE MAY
1907 EDNA
1908 WILLIAM HENRY
1909 IRIS
1910 EDITH
1912 KATE
1913 ARCHIBALD
1915 JOSEPH
1916 ETHEL
1917 ELSIE
1918 IDA
1920 THOMAS
1922 LAWRENCE
1923 JOAN
1924 ROY & EILEEN

Wow! could you imagine christmas!!!!
Thanks for your advice
Sharynn

Hi,
Thanks for all your replies.
I think the best thing to do would be to order my grandfathers birth certificate. That way I can see for definate who my grandfathers mother was.
If there is anyone who wants to help the details are;
BATSON Surname situated West Leicester.
My grandfather ROY BATSON born 1924
His father (or grandfather) JOHN THOMAS BATSON born 1874
married KATE JONES 1899. Had 18 children starting in 1901 and ending in 1924 with ROY my grandfather.
JOHN THOMAS is listed as just THOMAS on 1901 census. From JOHN THOMAS'S marriage certificate I can see his father is listed as CHARLES BATSON.
Any help or hints would be very much appreciated
Regards
Sharynn

Hello there,
Yes I know its quite possible for women to carry on having babies well into their 40's. It just threw me out a bit when working out the dates it would seem Kate would be 47/48 when she had twins (my grandad and his sister) also there is the surname thing. I know for definate Kates maiden name was jones ( i have her marriage cert) so why is it listed yeomans on my grandads birth?
I'm going to order my grandads birth cert.
Its quite addictive this searching!!! Ive only been doing it for a couple of weeks and I'm back to 1790 already!!!
Not sure how to go back further tho, so I think i will develope other branches ( greatgrandads siblings ect)
Anyway thanks for your tips.
sharynn

From what I understand, Charles would be my grandfather on my dad's side. My dad never met him. My dad was born in 1946. Apparently, Grant and Frances are Charles' parents, but again we aren't sure of this information. Anything you may be able to tell me is greatly appreciated.
