Laurenda Batten married Jethro Howell December 1854. she was born 1836 in NC. Jethro was born 1832, died 1885. I don't know her family's names. I am told that she was adopted and raised by another family, possible by the name of "Holt."

Her name was most probably Nancy L. This is highly likely, since it seems everyone in that area uses their middle names.

Children: Genetta; Charlie; Mary; London King (King Larden/Lum); Appie m. George Worley; Nell; Elizabeth; Tilithia m. Millard Lane; Luetta (Lou); Fristus Haywood Howell m.
Moses Batten

I am looking for background information on Moses Batten: date and place of birth, his parents, and anything else. Records show that Moses liven in Montgomery County, NC from about 1787 until the 1820s. He had a brother, James, living in Montgomery County during this same period.

Moses married Patsey Hagood (Haygood, Haywood)about 1800 or 1801 in NC. Patsey is thought to have been a sister of Bird Hagood, originally from Brunswick County, VA who moved to Montgomery County, NC in the late 1790s, by way of Orange County, NC and Wilkes County, NC.

Patsey and Moses had three children: Evy, born i804 in NC; James Henry, born 1808 in NC; and, John, born 1810 or 1811 in NC.

Moses served with the NC militia during the War of 1812.

The entire family migrated to Carroll County, TN during the 1820s. There is speculation that Moses' brother also moved to Carroll County, TN and then moved on to IN. I don't have any documentation to substantiate this as a fact. One or more Hagood (Haygood, Haywood) families moved to Carroll County at the same time.

Moses'daughter Evy married Thomas W. King and moved to AR. His son James Henry married Mary Stone and son John married Emily King.

Any information on Moses' origin and early life will be of great help.

The mysterious Frank Batton/Batten

Frank Batton (aka Francis or Franklin, Batton or Batten) lived in Reedy at the time of the 1910 census with his wife Bell and children Floy, Rumsey, and Halley. Little else is known about Frank, and he was never spoken of by any of his family members. All inquiries were met with "none of your business." Hence the mystery.
I believe that Frank was the son of William J. and Catherine Runnion Batten, born around 1866---but I have not been able to prove it. Frank and Mary Bell Morris were married in Roane County in 1892 but their parents' names were not on the marriage license. Bell Morris Batten died in Akron in 1926-7 (either divorced, widowed or estranged from Frank), but there is no trace of Frank's death either in WV or Ohio that I can find. One relative said he may have died in 1937, but there are no facts supporting that.
I'm at the end of my rope here and would greatly appreciate any help finding out 1) whether my Frank was William's son, and 2) what the heck happened to him. Please HELP!!!!

Have traced my direct line of Batten back to the Chichester area of Sussex. (Although they are staring to appear as Battin). There does not appear to be very many Batten/Battin familys in the area at the time, so most are probably related. Is there anybody else looking at Batten / Battin in the Sussex area? I am happy to share the info I have. Thank you.

John James Batten

I am seeking any information pertaining to and/or any descendants and pictures of my grandfather, JOHN JAMES BATTEN, and any of the family members shown below.
John was born in 1856, 1858, 1861, 1864, or 1866 (depending upon the document examined). Also, since the border between Virginia and North Carolina shifted several miles, I am not certain if he was born in the extreme south eastern part of Virginia or the extreme north eastern part of North Carolina. He died in May, 1921 in Lake City, Florence County, South Carolina.
John’s parents were James Thomas Batton (1825 - 1875) and Sarah Jane Lovett Batton/Batten (1832 - 1910). They had their primary home in Kempsville, Princess Anne County, VA. But, they also had some property in NC. John had at least 9 siblings (all born in VA): James T. (1853), Name Unknown (B.1854 - D.1855), Ozias W. (1856), Albert J. (1858), Emily J. (1860),
Mary E. (1862), Robert L. (1866 or 1867), Noah F. (1867 or 1869), and Walter J. (1873).

John James Batten was married to Sarah E. Moses in 1884 in Norfolk, VA; and, they had the following children: Emma L. (1886), Grace E. (1888), John J. (1890), Ozias C. (1891),
James T. (1892), and Barbary E. (1894).

Subsequently, John James Batten was married to Alice Laura Bishop in the early 1900's, place unknown. Alice Laura Bishop Batten (1888 - 1926) was probably from the north western part of SC.
Their children were: Harry Clifton (1907 - 1959), Leeroy (1910 or 1911; left home at early age and moved to Midwest), Sara (1915 - 2002), Albert Franklin (1916 - 1968; my father),
James Lawrence (1920- 1999; A.K.A.

I am seeking any information on Eli or Mary A Batten, who is listed in the 1860 and 1870 census in Adams twnshp, Parke, Indiana. My possible link is a female living in the household, Mary E Montgomery. I have the same name marrying my great grandfather (James P Daniel) in Parke County in 1876, but do not have any parental information. I am assuming that Mary A is Mary E's mother, and has remarried. Can anyone shed some light for me on this information? I can't find a marriage for Eli in Indiana at all through the library database provided online.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated...
Debbie Daniel Poelma

Hi

has anyone come across the marriage or offspring of Eleazar Batten and Frances Smith in their research please? Possibly in Berks, Hants or as a long shot London. We've been told it happened but have found no proof it would be in the 1600's, possibly late 1500's.

Thanks

My great grandfather "Isaac Batten" appears on UK census records for Hereford in 1891 and 1901 which state that he was born in Wiltshire in 1857.

He married an Emily Jane Harris in Hereford in 1884.

I cannot find any trace of him before 1891 and also cannot find a birth record for him.

Does the name / location mean anything to anyone ?

I've contacted Wiltshire Record Office - they've been unable to find him.

I've got a query outstanding with Hereford Record Office to search Marriage Banns as there could be more information in here.

Any suggestions as to where I go next ?

I'm really at a dead end on this one.

Thanks

Richard Batten

William James Batten

William (or even James William) Batten was my great grandfather. I have his marriage certificate to Belissa Agnes Wood on 2nd June 1894 in Watford, Herts, England, age 40 years, so his birthdate would have been about 1854. They had a son, William James Batten (my grandfather) born in 1894 when his father is listed as a General Laborer. By the time of his son's marriage in 1920 he was a 'Coffee House Proprietor' in Watford. I know when he died (1928), even where he is buried, but have no idea where he was born. Can anybody help?

Isaac James Batten

I'm new to this game and have just started researching my family.

My Great-Grandfather is Isaac James Batten born around 1888 / 9 in Herefordshire. His mother was Emily Batten and I have a home address in Credenhill, Herefordshire.

Isaac married Louise (surname Latimer I think & born in Dublin around 1898) and they had 4 children born in Tipperary - Florence & Horace John (my grandfather) 1919, Albert 1921 and Kathleen 1922.

They emmigrated to Canada in 1923 aboard the Montclare (I have the passenger dockets) and following a short time livig with Louise's sister Kathleen Atkinson in Dundas, Ontario (during which time they had 2 further children Noreen and Billy) they settled in Kingston Ontario.

My Grandfather, Horace John, moved back to the UK during the 2nd world and settled in Birmingham. All of the rest of the family remained in Kingston.

Do any of these names ring any bells to anybody ? Can anybody fill in any missing blanks or kick start me on the right path.

thanks

Richard Batten

Thomas Batten born C 1816,England. Wife Charlotte born IN THE VICINITY of 1820 to 1830 possibly in the US or in Quebec (then lower Canada)A census puts her as of American origin - a cousin tells me this was only done if the person was of native blood. In 1842 Thomas BUTTON had a lot in Oneida Twp, Ontario along the river. He was a pathmaster. They had at least 12 children :D My ascendant is Sarah Ann (1846 to 1898), but there was a Calvin (1849 to 1880), Charlotte, Hiram, John, Matilda, Florence, Almira, Elvina, Lucy, Mary, Emmie all born between 1838 and 1861. All children are listed as being born in Upper Canada. If this sounds like your family, please contact me. Thank you.
Maer

I am trying to locate BATTEN researchers with a connection to the STARLING family of central NC during the late 1700's to early 1800's. These families moved south from NC to SC, GA, FLA, ARK and so on. The connections could help us both solve alot of unanswered questions. Other surnames of interest not limited to: STRICKLAND and FAULK. I can be contacted at <kendraclopton@hotmail.com>. Thanks so much for any help !!
Sincerely,
Kendra Clopton

Valentine Batten and Mary Shuttle's marriage

Hi

I have now found and received the marriage certificate for Valentine and Mary.

They married 19th August 1854 in the parish Church of St George Hanover Street, Middlesex (London).

Valentine is described as a widower and we believe he was married to Mary's sister Anne previously, however a cousin has discovered that marrying your dead wife's sister was illegal but is not sure when this was repealed. Can anyone shed anymore light on this?

Also we have yet to find Valentine and Anne's marriage although the information we currently have was Reading in 1851, as well as Anne's death, and Mary's death.

At the time of Valentine and Mary's marriage both were of full age, Valentine was residing in Duke Street, and Mary in Vernham's Dean where she was born, their first child was baptised in Inkpen August 1855.

Susan

She had several siblings but there are 2 brothers we know very little about. In the 1880 census, Issac and Elizabeth had a 2 year old son, William. He was not in the home in the 1900 census. In the 1900 census, there is a James P. born Oct 1882. I have information he married a Vernettie Wright but I do not know much more than that.
Robert Noel, Robert Newton, John Ryan Batten

Is it possible that for years that a poor or smudged image of the 1860 St Johns County, Florida has led researchers astray? Is it possible that the person listed as John R??? in that census the same as the one listed as Robert N listed in the 1870 Nassau County census. There is not anything found beyond the 1860 census that indicates the existance of John Ryan Batten, and there is nothing prior to 1860 that has been found on Robert N.

With consideration of the above, does anyone in the family of Robert Noel or the descendants of Isham Batten have any knowledge of the use of the double first name practice. It is where a person was given three to four given names, some being compound names. If you are not aware of this in some families, it can cause some long hours of confusion, and frustration, I know because I have several families who used the system and know the problems I had prior to learning of it.

Also if anyone knows the location of the census record of Isham's family in the 1850 Telfair County Census, I have not found them listed in any of the indexes and don't want to have to scan the whole county, to find them.

TIA

Bill Fish

This is a real long shot. I'm trying to track down a Donald Batten who served in the Canadian Navy during the 1950's. We know very little about him but here goes. Donald's ship was refitted in Belfast between 1956/early 1958. He was married to a Welsh woman whose family originated from the Pontypool area and who we believe died in late 1957/early 1958. We believe they had a daughter - possibly called Hillary? Donald returned to Canada and was last known of in about 1959 based at a shore base in Nova Scotia. Any help would be appreciated.
