Hello Linda,
I am pretty sure we are from the same Battiest family line. My husband is named after Frank Battiest Born 2-10-1880 and he is Choctaw Indian. A lot of things are matching up so I think we are looking for information on the same family line. We would love to talk with you more about this. Frank and Sally are my husbands Great, Great, Great Grand parents. My husband (Frank) his mother had such fond memories of her G grandparents that when she had her own children she named them one girl and one boy after them so my husband Frank has a sister named Sally. Okay I'll stop going on and on. We do look forward to hearing from you. Kristie

James was/is my biological father. he went missing in 1976 or that is the last time I saw him. His mom, dad and brother, Claude Allen, are all dead. Prior to his death James Sr heard that he had died in California then heard that it was Jim but someone who stolen his wallet. I don't know how he heard all of this.

BAPTISTE, BATTIEST, BATTICE (all spellings) DNA PROJECT

There is a new DNA Project listed on FamilyTreeDNA under the primary name of BAPTISTE, but covers a great number of other name variants.

I have been involved in research on CHOCTAW BATTIEST Root ancestry for several years, and would be particularly pleased if male descendants of CHOCTAW heritage - BATTIEST, BATTICE, BATTESE, BATTEASE (all spellings) would participate in this DNA Project. It is an attempt to confirm our male French ancestor married into the MS Choctaw Tribe prior to Removal. The project will attempt to bring together many BAPTISTE descendants in that same family line.

You may contact the BAPTISTE DNA Project Coordinator through the FamilyTreeDNA site for further information and to obtain a reduced group rate when requesting the Y-DNA sample kit. It is suggested that you have at least the 25-marker test to determine closer generations.

If you are female of a BATTIEST family line, please encourage your BATTIEST father, brother, cousin, uncle, or grandfather to submit a paternal Y-DNA sample for testing.

It is my hope this project will answer many of the Choctaw Battiest family members' questions regarding their early ancestry - such as "Where did my Battiest name come from?" Also, to help meld Battiest families back together, generations later, after the 1830 Removal process to Indian Territory.

Battiest, James, buried in Mayhew community cemetery--information on others

Most of the tombstones in the old Mayhew cemetery, used from the 1850's and 1920 have been destroyed. This cemetery
is near the old Choctaw council grounds and Mayhew post
office and is now abandoned. Seeking information from anyone
with knowledge of anyone buried there. Mary James, a Trail of
Tears walker and daughter Kizzie Battiest are among those buried there. -- Thank you

Hi Larry,

I am of no relation, simply trying to help a friend by tracing her ancestry a little more closely.

She knows who her ancestors are, up to a point, but not much about them as people, and that is what she wants to discover. She wants to know these wonderful people who went through so many trials so that she might be where she is today.

Actually, I am trying to dig up any storeis, or documents , or anything else that can give some insight to the lives of these people, to make the family connections more than just a name.

To get names and dates is good, but to be able to learn about their lives brings them closer, and makes the appreciation of what took place in their lives more valuable to those who came to be born later.

Too many people only wish to know the "who", but not the "how" or "why" certain things turned and caused drastic change in not only their lives, but in the lives of later generations.

I try to help people who are looking for the answers to their ancestry, most of whom, do not know as much as my friend.

Each person I help is a work of love for me, because I know how very much it can mean. If you can help me I would certainly appreciate it. What I do does not ever involve money, some things you cannot place a price on.

Thank you for contacting me.

Bonnie
kwoneenee@yahoo.com

Bonnie,
I don't mind helping a relation, can you tell me how your friend is related to the Battiests or Lena Simpson?
My dad, Abner Jr. (Dooley), died at an early adult age when I was very young. He and his sister Bessie and brother Sidorous were orphaned when they were children so I never knew my grandparents, Abner Sr. and Lena personally, but I know much about them and have some info on their parents, as I mentioned it is mostly on the Battiest side. Some of the stories are very personal and some of it is even tragic, I would prefer to tell these things through my email, mercury53@spinn.net
Thanks
Larry

Battiest - Battist

I have found a new clue that may shed new light on those
who are searching for John Battist and all the variant
spellings. Since it has been handed down to me in my
family lore that I have Indian ancestors, this new clue
may be of some value. I have never found my Indian
ancestor. Under the title "Wabanaki Warriors Revoluntionary
War" are listed the following: Battis, John (Jean Baptiste)
MicMac; Battist John (Jean Baptiste)homeland: StFrancis PQ, Abnaki Indian Ranger Co.
1780-81 and there is a third listed as Batis, John (Jean Baptiste) homeland Maine,
Maliseet tribe. I have no idea at this moment how research the
Abnakis in Canada...but I do find the above interesting.

John Battiest/Battease
I am a descendant of an elusive John Batease, coming down
from his son Joseph who married Laura Westcott. I have been
searching this name for over 30 years. There are two major
problems that hinder my search. (1)If John was from Montreal, Canada as family lore says, then in such
case his
name may well have been Jean-Baptiste (something) with the
surname being dropped altogether when he settled in Vermont.
(2)family lore also said our name was pronounced Bat' ease and not Bat teese'. Now if you say Batease
under the first
pronounciation fast, you come up with surname Bettys. Not to
mention every spelling conceivable inbetween and to give a few, Battice, Battese, Battis, Bettis etc. and
possibly Bettys. Joseph had a son named Joseph Andrew...who went by
the name Andrew. There was an Andrew Bettys in Vermont in the early 1800s. My John
(Jean?)supposedly left a family in
Montreal and came to Vermont and married two more times. I know of two children, who are half-bro/sis,
Joseph and Betsy.
Joseph was born 1805-09 Vermont and Betsey was younger and born in Burlington, Vermont. She
married Nathan Wescott.
