I scanned the town records for Dedham and Doveer, MA while trying to find the birthplace of my ancestor, Joseph Battle. Unfortunately, after I tried to piece together the genealogy of the Dedham Battles, I found that the Joseph I was focusing on "died young". I would be happy to send the information I have to anyone needing the original published information.

EVA ROSE BATTLES

Hoping that someone can point me in the right direction and give me a bit of guidance on where to go next. I am researching the wife of my 2nd great grandfather and I have hit a wall. I have the following information concerning Eva Rose Battles: Born Abt 21 March 1884 in Montreal Canada, Married Martin Harrigan on 23 Dec 1901 in Montreal Quebec Canada. Her fathers name is Patrick Battles and Mother is Margaret Hacnett (?) not sure of the spelling for the last name, as it is hard to make out on the marriage paper.

I have searched the Quebec Vital and Church records and found the marriage papers but have not been able to locate a birth document. Any suggestions on where to move next or what you next move would be.

I have searched using rose, eva rose, E R, battles, battle, batles, battle, batel with no luck

I know this is a bit of a scattered question but I appreciate the help.

Mike
AFRO-AMER./INDIAN BATTLE(S) IN VIRGINIA (1700 - Present)

I have been researching my Battles lineage in Central Virginia (Albemarle, Amherst, Goochland, Louisa Co.). Thus far, I have traced my family back to a Sarah Battles born in 1725. The only information I have is that in 1762 she was in Goochland County with her son Shadrach, Sr. (my direct lineage to her). This family is mixed and were free. I know that the family lived lived under the protection of St James, Northam Parish (Episcopal) in Goochland in the 1760 and Shadrach owned 191 acres of land in Amherst in 1756 (probably with his mom). If you have any connection or information about this family, please contact me. I'd be happy to share with you. You can contact me through his board or via cherylr@starpower.net.

Thank you,
Cheryl Rogers

John C. Battles, born VT 1809, son Comodore Battles, born 1836 NY

I have two original Studio photographs (Cabinet Portraits) of the Battles family, which I would like to get back to family members. Please email me if you are related to this family.

I found Comodore P. Battles, age 64, in the 1900 census Perry (Dallas Co.) IA, with wife Mary and son Charles. In 1850, Comodore was age 14 in home of parents, John (age 40) and Elizabeth (38) in Napoli (Cattaragus Co.) NY, along with daughter Jane, age 10. In 1880, John was age 71, living in Manlius (LaSalle Co.) IL with wife Polly, age 53, so Polly was his second wife..

The photographs are 1) of "J. C. Battles - born 1809; died 1893" written on the photo - showing a man about age 82, with a wife about 60-65, so this has to be wife Polly, and the photo would have to have been taken about 1890-1893, before his death. And 2) A photo identified as "Comodore Battles and family" - which shows Comodore about age 30, with his parents and sister. Parents (John and stepmother Polly, I am sure) look to be about 55 and about 38, give or take a few years - and his sister Jane looks to be about 25. This photo looks as if it was taken about 1870s.

My email is margerice@prodigy.net.

Wm & Ann Battles, 1850-1870, Cherokee Co AL

I'd like some help in nailing down my Battles family connection, please! My 3rd great grandmother was Margaret Battles, who married Daniel Shew in Cherokee County AL around 1847-1848. They are on the 1850 census (Daniel and Marget "Shoe") with a one-year-old son William. In 1860, Margaret was a widow with three children, William, my GG grandmother Martha Louise, and the youngest, a boy named Gilford. In 1870, Margaret was living with Martha Louise and her husband (Jasper) Baird and their one year old daughter, my great grandmother Eula.

My theory from the records is that Margaret was a daughter, perhaps the oldest daughter, of William & Ann Battles, whose other children included (as of the 1850 census) Asender (sp?), Samantha, Julia, William, Franklin, Lewis and Charlsie/Charlsey. They are all living nearby in 1850, 1860 and 1870. Margaret's first son was named William (and her husband's father was Boston Shew so the kid wasn't named for that side of the family!). I can't find another Battles family in the immediate area that looks like it would be a "fit" and it _has_ to be more than just coincidence that this is the only Battles family that stays on the same page (or immediately prior or following page) of the census in 1850, 1860 and 1870.

Anybody working on this line? Let's talk!

-- Judy
76702.2000@compuserve.com

Hi,

I am related to Mary Jane Battles, daughter of Frank and Sarah Whitworth Battles from Cherokee County, Ala. We think Frank was the son of Ann Jacobs and William Battles, who was the son of William Noel Battles. Mary Jane is the only Battles I have a picture of. Does anyone have any pics from this particular line they'd like to share? I can share Mary Jane's pic with anyone who is interested.
Kelley

Can someone fill me in on how George W. Battles and Guilford/Gilford Battles, who both lived in Cherokee County AL in the 1850s, fit in to the Battles family tree?

George W., Guilford/Gilford and William Battles all had land patents from the federal government in Township 10-S, Range 8-E, Cherokee County in the 1849-1860 time frame. The land is all close to each other and close to another family that a Battles daughter married into (the Shew family). William, George and Simon Shew (who was a brother-in-law of Margaret Battles Shew) all had property lines that touched in section 9 (and Margaret's husband Daniel had land touching Simon's in section 10 to the east); Guilford Battles was just to the west in section 8.

I know who William Battles was (son of William Noel Battles), but who were the other two and where do they fit in?

-- Judy (76702.2000@compuserve.com)

I am looking for information about Mary L. Battles. She married my Grandfather, Rev. Jacob Horton in the early 1900's. They lived in Stoddard County, MO and I'm pretty sure they lived there the rest of their days together. With him being a Minister, I suspect they moved frequently from town to town. She died in 1922 after childbirth. They had several children, only 3 of them lived, they were: Cecil, Irene, who was my mother, and Opal. Mary was born in 1886. I would like to know her Mother and Father's names, and where she is buried and any other information anyone may have about her.

Jessie Casewell Battles & others around Limestone, Co. AL

I'm researching Battles around Limestone County, Alabama. I'm certain that not all the Battles I'm searching are NOT in Limestone County.

As of now, I'm reseraching for information on Jessie Caswell Battles b.) August 17, 1893 in Alabama and d.) June 13, 1951 in Morgan County Alabama. He married Zola R. Owen(s) b.) April 22, 1893 and d.) January 30, 1926.

I've been told by my grandmother that she was Native American, possibly Seminole, but nobody seems to know for sure. I believe, but it's not certain that Jessie's father was Jesse C. Battles who was married to a woman named Minnie. Jesse's father then would have possibly been Caswell Battles and his mother Mariah Stokes(?).

I know when Jessie C. wife Zola, died he remarried and had at least one, possibly two other children.

His children were:

1. Thomas C. Battles b.) December 15, 1914
2. Ruth S. Battles b.) March 10, 1917
3. Wilson R. Battles b.) November 11, 1918
4. Andrew W. Battles b.) August 11, 1920

Second children:

1. Howard
2. Ann(ie/e)-Faye

Sorry if I've confused anybody.

I am looking for any information on Alfred Martin Battles married to Annie Elizabeth Frye (Indian) in Alabama who had children by the name of William Jacob, Martin, Elizabeth, Jane, Maggie and Grace. Alfred Martin Battles father was Jacob Battles married to Pruttance Walker. When the children were young Alfred was convited of moonshining and put in jail and the kids were taken from Annie because she was Indian. They were put in foster homes and when Annie tried to find them the courts would not tell her where they were. We think she may have moved on to the Indian Resv. in Ok. when she could not get her children. I am looking for any information that some one could help me with on all of this.

Albert Edward Battles

I have traced a few more items but not too much. Have found "Alvin Battles" in the 1860 cencus. Marion County, Warren Township, in Missouri. His wife is listed as Cythea A., but I also have his son's obituary from 1934 and it lists him as Albert Edward . And his mother as Mary Alice. My great aunt had provided that information to the newspaper. The 1860 census lists "Alvin" as 35 years old and born in Pa. and his occupation as carpenter. That would put his birth around 1825. I also have the 1900 Mo. census that lists my great grandparents as Edward and Liddie Battles and his parents being from In. "Albert" and Ill. "Cynthea or Mary".

In my search for my ancestors, I have read that all the Battles in America were descendents of Thomas Battelle of Dedham Ma. formerly of Suffolk England.
who descended from the Norman invasion of England of William the conqueror. There are so many Battles and some from Ireland and Scotland, are we all from this one man? Can anyone enlighten me. Also if Noel Battles real name was Battlesby was he also descended from Thomas?

Battles family Scotland

I've just discovered this site and have been absolutely blown away with the information I've found out about the Battles family. In Scotland there a very few of us left and I knew nothing about our history. My grandfather played soccer for Scotland in 1930s but also played for Boston and the USA national team. Does anyone have info as to where the Battles came from before they reached the US?

Battles Family from Hyde Park Boston

I am looking for members of the Battles family from Hyde Park Boston. My great grandparents were James and Anne Battles who were born in Ireland. Three of their children were John (my grandfather) Patrick and Martin. My grandfather John was married three times. He had three sons by his first wife who I believe may have been named Mary. When she passed away he married my grandmother Delia and had a son William who was my father. I am looking for descendants of my father's three half brothers. I know my great grandparents and grandparents are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Hyde Park, Boston. Any information will be appreciated.

Battles Family - New Zealand

Hi, I am the elder brother of Ryan Scott Battles and son of Bernard Joseph (BJ) Battles who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 27 Feb 1940. My father was the third generation BJ Battles. My grandfather, Barney was born in Musselborough and played soccer for Hearts FC and Scotland - his father, Barney was Irish (?) and played for Glasgow Celtic and Scotland around 1900.
Does anyone know my great grandfather ?

I have just emigrated to New Zealand to set up the first "Battles Clan" down under.
Are there any Battles south of the equator ?.

I have been amazed by the response from Ryan's email and look forward to reading more about the Battles name.
