Seems from the initials that would be Finley Lafayette Batty, born abt 1853. He was an ancestor on my father's side. My dad's grandmother's maiden name was Batty, and F.L. Batty would have been her brother's child, her nephew. That would have made him 52 years old if the year is 1905. I would be fascinated to see the house if you are open to a visit sometime. Please write me at lattamemoirs [at] gmail [dot] com and perhaps we can arrange something. If the piece of wood isn't too big, yes, I would appreciate having it. Thank you so much for taking the time to write! (My website is www.allysonlatta.ca)

Re: Batty Family,East Yorkshire, England

Hi Jack Batty,
Jack Batty here. I too am a long time Batty researcher. I'm in the states but that has not daunted me. I love the idea of searching the origin of Batty. Some of my favorts are and the Rever tribes between England and Scotland. Story goes that the Bettie clan somehow allegiance to the Anderson warring clans crossed into England, where the name was pronounced Ba Tee and eventually became Batty I don’t know enough about English History to substantiate this. However there was a set of gravestones found in Scotland with the name Batty on them that are said to be a few hundred years old. My research does find Batty in the west Yorkshire area where in 500 or so a Dcoata Batty did give a goodly amount to the church or probably at that time was a Priory near Element.

As for me I kind of think they may have come up north with a group of run-away conscripted yeomen for one of the may wars to control the wild north, and stayed behind. Other Favorites are Scotland and the Rever tribes between England and Scotland. Story goes that the Bettie clan, somehow allegiance to the Anderson warring clans crossed into England, where the name was pronounced Ba Tee and eventually became Batty I don’t know enough about English History to substantiate this. However there was a set of gravestones found in Scotland in the 1940s by a reseracher that had the name Batty on them are said to be a few hundred years old. My research does find Batty in the west Yorkshire area where in 500 or so a Batty did give a goodly amount to the church or probably at the time the Priory near Element.

another is when one of the early kings associated with De Lacey left a group of run-away conscripted yeomen behind.

In truth who knows but I do love the search. Pontefract in west Yorkshire is my favored for a best origin of Batty dating back to Edward 1, who tried to control the Scottish borders. Edward did support Priories in the north, and Ponterfact Castle was a stronghold for Richard 11 in early history, Pontefract was loaded with Batty and names that are related by spelling. Who knows.

It’s great to find someone who would like to fine the origin of the name and not tie it to a nickname for Bartholomew as the official name scholars put it.

Hope this did not bore you
Jack Batty jaacmms@gmail.com

In truth who knows but I do love the search.
Robert Batty - Rothwell/Burton in Lonsdale born 1825

I'm trying to trace Batty family tree and links to both Rothwell / Burton in Lonsdale.

I have traced Robert Batty born in 1825 and registered in Rothwell Holy Trinity. He was married in Burton in Lonsdale to Ellen (Eleanor Carr)in 1846. On the certificates, his father was listed also as Robert Batty and a potter... However I can't trace this Robert Batty (snr)or his wife Mary in the 1841 census. I have found a parish record that suggests Robert Batty (snr) was buried at Rothwell Holy Trinity in 1825 ?! So it's possible that family moved to Burton-in lonsdale/Wray area afterwards...possibly due to family connection. But so far I've drawn a blank..

Would be interested to hear from anyone also researching the above...or who may have any suggestions as to where to look next ..

I am decended from JONATHAN BATTY(IE)(Barnsley 1663-1714) who had the following children: Jonathan b.1684 / Jane b.1689 / Edward b.1696 / JOSEPH (my line) b.1701. There may be a connection. Jonathan was a corvisor (shoemaker) who died a pauper. Edward and Joseph were apprenticed to Cutlers in Sheffield. Edward is a bit of a dark horse who ended up in London as a victualler. He may be the father of children in Yorkshire before he moved south by 1746 when he died in Hackney.
Hi
I am so sorry that I have only just seen your questions. I am MALCOLM BATTY and I have collated the history of our mutual ancestors. RALPH BATTY (born 4th Aug 1860 - 26 Wellington St, London) married ANNIE ELIZABETH CLAMTREE (born1859, Islington) in April 1885 in Kensington, London. Ralph's father was Edward Batty, who is my great-great-grandfather. Another son was John Batty who was my great-grandfather. I can go back to 1663 in Yorkshire and fill in most of the victorian details. Contact me on mrb@battym.freeserve.co.uk and I will try to send you as much info as possible.

Stanley Batty (1920?) More Information

I am looking for more information on a Stanley Batty, who we believed was born in 1920 in Leeds, Yorkshire, UK. I'm don't know any information on him really, as I started doing this research for his daughter, Susan Patricia (Maiden Name: Batty) Morgan.

I know that he married Irene Stretton in about 1948 in Wolverhampton, or Staffordshire area. They had a child, as said, Susan Patricia Batty, who was born on the 22 February 1951. After this, there is no really information about him, as he seemed to have just left the family and never came back. Irene Stretton remarried years later to Jack (aka John) Westly.

If anyone could help, it would be extremely appreciated as Susan Patricia (Maiden Batty) Morgan has now passed and it would be nice to find out whether she had anymore family in world, or whether her father is still alive or when he died.

Nicholas BATTY of Lakeport, Ontario, Canada, early 1800s, wife unknown

Searching for information on Nicholas BATTY (various spellings of last name - see below), who lived early 1800s in Lakeport, Ontario, Canada. Lakeport was in Haldimand Township, Northumberland County, Newcastle District.

I believe he moved to Canada from the U.S., but so far have had no luck finding documentation.

Newcastle District Assessment Records show the following between 1802 and 1811:

1802 - Nicholas Bettey
1803 - Nicholas Bettee
1804 - Nicholas Betty
1805 - Nicolus Betty
1806 - Phinley Bettey
Widdow Bettey

1811 - David F. Battey

(Note: Most documentation from this time on uses the spelling BATTY.)

I believe from these Assessment Records that Nicholas died in 1805/6, leaving behind his widow, name unknown. (Her name MAY have been Polly or Mary.)

I believe Nicholas had at least three children: David F. [Finley] Batty [Phinley Bettey above], Samuel, and possibly a daughter Abigail. I have detailed information on the families of David (wife: Mary Loyst), Samuel (wife: Lucinda/Lucy ?) and Abigail (husband Ephraim Doolittle, born in Vermont), all of whom died in Lakeport. But I've found no evidence of burials of Nicholas or his wife.

A census record for Samuel gives his birthplace as "U.S." Census listings, etc., for David and Samuel indicate that both were born abt. 1784. Abigail's birth date appears online as 1792.

Unusual family names that might be clues include that of David's son, Finley Wellington Batty, and another son, David Calvin (sometime appearing as Canfield) Matthew Batty, who went by Calvin; and Finley Wellington's sons, Finley Lafayette Batty and George Wellington Batty. Other male names: William, Henry and George. Oddly, the name Nicholas did not show up in any subsequent generations.

Baptist church records also show a Lydia Batty, connection unknown, though it was a small community and there certainly must have been one.

These Battys were Baptists. I don't know whether they were of British or Irish origin (there's conflicting information in censuses).

In the mid-1800s, some of these Battys moved to Michigan and began using the spelling BEATTY.

Any suggestions for further research on Nicholas BATTY's family before 1802 would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
My maiden name was Allen so that is the link we have with the Batty's. Jane, wife of George, is my first cousin three times removed - and if you understand that relationship you are better than me!
It might be pertinent to add that part of the Allen tree so you know where the cousins fit in ... let me know if it is of interest as it may be going off on a tangent.....

Barbara

Hi Tom

I have never heard of Rantrefold or anything like that. I know where Copyhouse is and could place it on a map. I seem to recall that the last time I passed the place it was called Coppice House, though when I was a child we always called it Copyhouse.
It is just off the road from Llanwnog or Caersws to Bwlchyffridd, some 2 or 3 miles north of Caersws. After you pass Penrhiw, about 100yds down the road. there is a fork to the left, from which you can access Coppice House and Bronhaul. I don't know whether it is your intention to visit there, but please come back to me for more precise instructions if you so wish.
Where does 'Batty' fit into the equation ?

Regards
Stan

There are lots of people in Barnsley with the name Batty, so I am not sure if your family is linked (I still live in Barnsley). Williams father was Thomas Batty born 1816. Thamas had at least 5 children, Ann 1840, William 1845, Harriet 1848 Emma 1855 and Sarah E 1856. I have not researched any further back at the moment as I have been concentrating on another line of my family. It looks as though you have gone back quite a long way with your research. I know there were lots of people with the name Batty in a place called Higham about 3 miles from Barnsley as this is where I was born. The Battys in my family came from the Town Centre and Worsbrough, Barnsley.
Sorry not to be more help.

I don't have anything on Thomas other than a birthdate. Did you find him in any census listed with his parents or other siblings? I know of a few other siblings, but Thomas has eluded me thus far. If he's the one, I'd be more than willing to share what I have so far. If you have time to check, maybe we can link him up through other siblings or his parents. Let me know.
Velda.

Hi Velda

I am new to this and just starting researching and building my tree. This sounds good. My Great Grandfarther was Thomas Batty and the dates look in line, Thomas was married to Emma Batty (unfortunatley do no know her maiden name yet) My Grandfarther was John Arthur Batty who was married to Edith Batty. My Farther is Gordon Batty borne in 1922. All family from around the Eckington, Barlborough areas south east of sheffield - does this fit with you ?

Did your Thomas have a brother John born in 1817? Perhaps they were siblings and we have a similar thread.
