Georg-Thomas Bau,
It was wonderful to receive your message. We've been able to trace Johann coming to USA,New York City on a ship named the Bremen Brig. Vesta which arrived in NY October 5, 1840. The ship sailed from the port of Bremenhaven,Germany. After his arrival in this country, the next record we have is his marriage record from the Luthern Church records in New york City. He his wife were Lutheran. The marriage records only show that he was originally from Frankenbronn, Wuerzburg,Baiern and he married Catharina Maier on December 5, 1841 and that Catharina was from Weingarten, Carlsruhe, Baden. We have no records of her arrival in this country. He his wife had 4 children born in New York City. At some period he his family left NY and settled in Wisconsin. Census records in Wisconsin shows that he was a farmer. He was a Civil War veteran in the Illinois Infantry eventhough he would have been in his early 40's at that time. He died July 22, 1879 and his marker says he was born in Germany February 18, 1814. His cemetery marker is quite unusal looking and an eye catcher that we don't understand. It has a hand on it making a fist, but the thumb is up and the fingers down. If it would help me find more information, I can mail you a photo of it. After his death, Catharina went to live with their only daughter in St.Louis, Missouri. She is buried in St. Marcus Cemetery in St. Louis. She was born on December 13, 1819 in Germany and died in St. Louis on November 26,1900. Her tombstone is very unique also with a clutched hand and the index finger pointing up. Johann Catherine's oldest son Henry Bau settled in Hartland, Wisconsin and proceeded to have 5 sons (the youngest being my husbands Father). He was a very successful business man and ran a tavern restaurant/hotel. Also, accoding to records in Hartland, he was the first establishment in Hartland to have a telephone. We need help to find more information about Johann Bau and Catharina Meier before they left Germany. If you can be of any help, it would be wonderful. Thank you for your current reply, and wait to hear from you again soon. Best regards, John Mary Bau 532 Wildflower Trail, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579
