I am looking for information on the Herman Baumer family that emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1848. Herman was married to Wilhemena (both born approximately 1800). Their children were: Charles, Wilhemina, August, Louis and Herman. They came to the United States and lived in Pennsylvania, then many of their children moved to Iowa. I have found that they were originally from Erden and I am looking for any information on their line in that area.

She grew up in what I believe is now considered the Wildwood area of suburban St. Louis. She had 2 sisters: Frieda and Clara and 2 brothers: Robert and Edwin.

I am off the Michael Theisen branch, following down to Anne Theisen Doetkott and Gerhard Doetkott. I think my information is skewered with GErhard, their son. I am also researching Harry Piekarski, and info on his family Albert and Anna Schipritt Piekarski. Do You have any ideas, you can also e mail at geosch2@Juno.com

Thanks for your interest in the Baumer name. Unfortunately your Baumers come from a very different part of Germany (mine are from northern Germany, Westfalen / Westphalia area, while yours are from Bavaria, according to the ship's passenger list, NY Passenger Lists 1820 on found on Ancestry.com-- I checked the copy of the original manifest, and there is nothing about "Wortenburg" but father Georg is listed as from Bavaria, a weaver-- Castle Gardens makes an error when it says mother Clara and the children are from "Wurtenberg"). I would check Bavaria rather than Wuerttemberg province, if I were you. All the best in your research . . .

I have found out that I descended from Johann Jacob Baumer (b 1821) who married Elizabeth Howery. I found that his parent's names were Clara and George Baumer and the entire family immigrated from Wortenburg, Germany, arriving in NY on 11 Aug 1837. Does any of this ring a bell? Johann had 2 brothers: Simon and Jacob, and a sister Clara. I'm trying to research George & Clara and find out their information next.

As I have mentioned on other threads on this Baumer board,
Elisabeth Poepping was born 3 Feb 1869, Stearns Co., MN, to parents Hermann POEPPING (1836/1839, Ammeln (Ahaus Co.) Westfalen - 25 Jun 1897, Oak Twp(?), Stearns, MN, and Maria "Elisabeth" DOETKOTT (3 Feb 1851, Epe (Ahaus) Westfalen - 30 Dec 1870, Grove Twp. (Stearns) MN).
The connection to the Baumers is Elisabeth Poepping married Nov. 1888, Wahpeton (Richland) N.D., to Bernard (Barney) BAUMER, b 21 Apr 1871, New Munich (Stearns) MN, d 22 Jul 1945, Breckenridge (Wilkin) MN. Barney was the son of William (b Wilhelm) BAUMER (b 1840, Legden, Westfalen) and Elisabeth BENNING (b 8 Jan 1844, Legden [not Coblenz as mentioned elsewhere on this board]).
I hope this is clear enough. Elisabeth Doetkott was the first of 3 wives whom Hermann Poepping had. You are directly related to his 3rd wife, Anna Gertrude ROTTMANN.

Update on this John Baumer-- after studying Legden records, he is not a brother to my William Baumer, b 1840, but perhaps is still a cousin. The parents of John (in Germany Johann Henrich Bernard Baumer b 4 Jun 1825, not Johann Hermann as my old headline said) were Johann Henrich Bäumer, b ca 1781, and Elisabeth Lieftucht, who were married in 1821 at Legden.
I have more information on this and other Bäumer families from the Legden parish, some of whom emigrated to Cincinnati or to Minnesota and North Dakota.

My Great Grandfather was Herman J. Poepping youngest son of Herman and Anna Gertrude Poepping. I think I have seen information indicating that Joseph, married to Mary, Poepping came from Ahaus. Joseph and Mary Poepping are shown to be neighbors to Herman and Gertrude on the 1880 census of Oak Twnship, Stearns Co, MN. I think these two were brothers or some how related but I have NO evidence. I know Herman was married to Elizabeth Maria Doetkott and they had one daughter named Elizabeth, he then married Anna Gertrude Rottman. I think I have a pretty good grasp of Herman's life from the time he moved to Stearns Co., but I am still looking for Herman's parents, siblings, where he was born and where was he between immigration and the time he moved to Stearns. I would also like to know where Herman and Elizabeth Maria are in 1870?, one month old Elizabeth appears to be with Elizabeth Maria's parents. I assume Elizabeth Maria is in a hospital somewhere and I would like to find where and how she died.

Lois, in response to your e-mail of 3 Aug 2000 (a little late), I would be interested in some of your information on the Poepping family, especially in Elizabeth's siblings and ancestors.
I know this is the Baumer message board, but I checked, and there is no Poepping (or Popping) board (there probably should be one). So I respond here.
You probably were involved in the large Poepping history that my brother told me is now available. I am curious about one thing in particular, whether you had found Hermann's birth and ancestors in Germany. I am wondering if it would verify what William Baumer (whom I have mentioned on this board- 1840-1918) said about the origins of the Poeppings. He stated in a letter of 1904 that Elizabeth's parents, Herman Poepping, came from Huesings "Leibzucht" [small house] at Ammeln, which is just east of Ahaus, the county seat of Ahaus Kreis (county) in Westfalen. Does that agree with your information? Thanks for any response to this and any further information. (I too have studied a number of Stearns Poepping families while searching for Elizabeth and have found the census records for which you were searching plus more; I suppose though you have found them by now also) I hope to hear from you. My e-mail address is neumann@sasktel.net, or please respond here as well.

John Baumer (born Johann Hermann Baumer?) of Legden & OHIO

Thanks to Jan Kollenhof I know now that the William Baumer (1840) and Elizabeth BENNING (1844) family emigrated from Legden, Ahaus county, Westfalen. They went to Illinois for a year or two, then to Stearns County, MN, and finally settling in the Richland County, N.D. and Wilkin Co., MN areas.
Now I would like information William's older brother, John (born Johann Hermann) BAUMER, b 1825, who emigrated in 1856 and had the destination of Cincinnati, OH. There must be many relatives descending from him too. Can anyone help find this unknown part of the Baumer family tree? Thanks for any responses.

Thank you so very much for responding, Jan! You have answered a question that has been "bugging" me for the last couple years, the origins of the Baumer family. I figured being a large family it would not be hard to find people already doing research on them, but not until you wrote did I find the town of origin, Legden. I have already looked at a film for that town while searching for SCHWIEP and SCHWIETERS names but didn't think of looking for BAUMERS there. That is because Wilhelm's obituary says he was born in "Tadden", Germany (the last 3 letters are right anyway), while other places say he was from "Hannover", close but not quite in Westfalen.
I can tell you about what happened to Heinrich and Elizabeth, the oldest couple you mention, and their children Bernard and Wilhelm (I don't know anything about Johann at this point but can do further research using Ancestry.com). Wilhelm's family is of greatest interest as that ultimately connects with my SCHWIEP family (Joseph, son of Wilhelm, married my Josephine SCHWIEP, son of Gerhard Hermann Schwiep, born I believe was born in nearby Alstaette, Ahaus County, Westfalen. So neighbors marrying neighbors!
I see you give a listing of Wilhelm's family as follows-- in order of age: Heinrich/Henry, Anna, Joseph, [Barney], Anton, Lissi, Josephine, Maria, Susanna and William Baumer, all born 1865-1882. This almost agrees with what I have. I did not know of Heinrich. Is he the one of the 11 children (mentioned in William's obituary) who died as an infant? If you have dates, I'd appreciate that. "Lissi" we know as "Elizabeth". I do not know of a "Susanna", but in the order of ages we have two children, Katherine (married a BREWSTER), b ca 1882, and Lucille (married John PLOUGH). William was born 3 Jul 1887.
Another question I have is on Elizabeth Bennett (Benning?), William's wife. In her obituary and other sources she is said to come from "Coblenz", Germany, but this makes little sense in light of William being from Legden. Can you shed light on her birthplace or residence?
As far as Barney Baumer's family, in your response you mention you don't have his death information. It was 22 July 1945, Breckenridge (Wilkin) MN, and we have an obituary for that. You only seem to have info on one of his children while we have much info on the rest of the family too.
Anyway, thanks again. Please fill me in especially on the older Baumers especially. I can give what happened to them in Stearns County, MN, etc. There is much to tell and share about this interesting and large family.
The following concerns a Baumer family from LEGDEN, Germany, some of whom settled in the border-region of Minnesota/North Dakota in the 1850's/1860's. In 2001 and 2002 I posted queries/info. on this family on the Baumer Geneal.Forum (http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/baumer) Judging from the nature of queries posted in this thread here (notably from Ken Neumann, Donna/Leslie/Shirley Baumer, etc) I got the feeling that my 2001/2002 posts on the Baumer Forum may have gone unnoticed, reason why I draw attention to them here.

BAUMER family (from Hannover province?)

I have posted info on the William Baumer family (1840-1918), especially son Joseph (1867-1951).
Now I have found what seem to be William's father and a brother-- Henry Baumer (1801-1888) and Elizabeth (1797-1889). The latter are both buried at New Munich (Stearns) MN, Catholic cemetery. Their son was Bernard Heinrich Baumer (1829-1877), also buried there. Does anyone know if they are related to the Beumer / Baumer family around St. Augusta, Stearns, MN? Then my family could be related to the Henry b 1838 and Friedrich b ca 1842 too. Thanks for any response. In William's obituary mention is made of birth in "Tadden", Germany, but I have not found such a place (closest is Tadeln). Thanks for comments on this too.

I see only brief notes by Donna and Leslie BAUMER back in 2002 re Barney Baumer family.
I am interested in his father Wilhelm (William) BAUMER's origins (native town-- in Hannover?) and his wife's origins (Elizabeth BENNET / BUENNING-- said to be from near Koblenz-- but I question that) and any more complete family history. I have been studying (with obits, census, Rootsweb, etc.) the whole family and would like to find out as much as possible.
My connection is Joseph BAUMER, b 1867, Chicago(?), ILL, who later married Josephine (Sophie) SCHWIEP / SWEEP in 1890 in Breckenridge, MN. He died in Fargo 1951. They had 10 children, but I have incomplete info on Joseph b ca 1892, Henry, b Oct 1898, and Walter, b ca 1910. The rest of the family I have fairly good info, but more is always welcome.

I am wondering why this Poepping line is on the BAUMER list. I wonder if it is partly due to the fact there is a marriage of Elizabeth b 1869 in Stearns Co. (New Munich?) to Bernard (Barney) BAUMER (b 1869 in New Munich, MN) to parents William and Elizabeth BAUMER. The marriage took place in 1888 in Wahpeton, Richland Co., N.D.
I would be interested in any details on this Elizabeth b 1869, and if anyone has more info on Barney BAUMER and Elizabeth's family in North Dakota and Breckenridge, MN, area.

NOTE: I came across this obit while hunting for another, in my role as the RootsWeb obituary volunteer for the Allentown Morning Call newspaper. I am NOT researching this family.

This obituary was printed in:
The Allentown Morning Call
Allentown, Pennsylvania
Monday, June 3 1895
Page 1

John Baumer, of No. 531 North Fifth street, died yesterday morning on the commons, near the thread mill, of paralysis of the heart. He had been complaining for osme time of pain at the heart, but was working continually until Saturday evening, and appeared no worse than any other day, having worked longer than usual on that day. After returning from work he remarked that they would have ice cream the next day. Accordingly, yesterday morning, between 6 and 7 o’clock, he left home for J. F. Butz’s place, on Jordan street, to get the ice. After having obtained it he started to return home, when he suddenly fell over and death had claimed him. The engineer for Arbogast & Bastian, the meat dealers, was the first man to hasten to his side. He immediately summoned M. H. Bickert, of the Gordon street station. They soon saw that the man was dead and summoned Coroner Yost, who held an inquest. The Coroner’s jury consisted of the following: Dr. C. D. Schaeffer, foreman; C. Erwin, John A. Schoudt, Charles Wenner, C. E. Bach and Harry Deller. They rendered a verdict of death due to paralysis of the heart. Mr. Baumer was a carpenter by trade and at the time of his death he was in the employ of Contractor Albright. He was a sober and industrious workman. He was a member of I.O.O.F., Lodge No. 85, Macungie. He leaves a wife, Catherine, and seven children, Mary, Charles, Jane, Jacob, Edwin, Horace and Clarence, a baby, 7 months old and his aged mother. The funeral will take place on Thursday forenoon at 9 o’clock. Interment in Western Salisbury cemetery, Rev. M. O. Rath officiating.

Although not related (as far as I know) to Baeumers of St. Louis, am interested in same who were baptized, etc., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. In particular, Heinrich Baeumer who married Charlotte Fink with witnessses William Waltke and Charlotte Baeumer. Waltke is a kinsman. His mother was a Fink and trying to determine whether Charlotte Fink might have been a cousin. There are numerous Bethlehem Lutheran Church records of Baeumers. Thank you, Cynthia in CA Cynvogel@aol.com

Hi Toni,
Thank You for responding.
Im not sure of all the family history quite yet, and everything is still quite new as well.
It would however be interesting to see if it is the same Poepping family we are looking into. My Grandparents were Sylvester and Irene (Dickhaus) Poepping. Great Grandfather was Gerhard.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Carrie
