Baumgartner DNA testing

A Baumgartner (+variants) surname group was started in 2006 with FTDNA. After a slow start, the group is now growing and interesting results are being found. For example, matches have been found for one line of American Baumgartners, one line of American Bomgardners and Baumgartner families living in Trub, Switzerland, known for its role in Mennonite history. I am administrator of this group (my mother was a Baumgartner) and would be happy to answer any questions by persons interested in being tested.

My Baumgartner Mess...

My Baumgartner Mess…
Okay I am struggling with my Baumgartner family…

My 4th great grandparents were Christian Baumgartner and Julie Berthoud. They were supposedly married in 1833 in Switzerland. They had 8 children who I am trying to find in the US but not having much luck.

From contradicting bios/obit/etc., the Baumgartner family came to the US between 1844 and 1851. They settled in Stone Creek, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Within two years of being here, Christian died in the fields.
Their children were:

1. John Baumgartner- b. 1 Jan 1834 in Berne, Switzerland. He went to Princeton, Bureau Co., Illinois with the Whitver family. In 1858, he married Mary Berg. They were married until 1882 when she died. They had no children. He remarried in 1883 to Margaret “Maggie” Guither. They had two children, Edward and Samuel. John supposedly died in 1900; however, he was in the 1900 census for Walnut, Bureau, Illinois. I have found John and Mary in the 1870 and 1880 census living in Walnut but missing him in 1860. I also have his wife and children traced through the 1930 census and have their death dates as well.

2. Julie Elizabeth Baumgartner- b. 1836 in Berne, Switzerland. She married John Arbogast on 15 Jun 1853 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. In the 1860 through the 1880 censuses, John, Julia and children were living in Jersey County, Illinois. Their last child (they had 16) was born in 1884. After that, they moved to the Dakota Territory. All their children except Margaret (my direct ancestor) moved with them. They were spread between Iowa, Dakota, and Minnesota.

3. Roseanna Baumgartner- b. 1837 in Berne, Switzerland. She married Louis Arbogast (sisters married brothers) in January 1858 (unconfirmed) in Bureau County, Illinois. I have not found them in any censuses. I do have information that says they had 8 children. Roseanna died in 1888. I do know that their daughter Lena married Joseph Shearer and she was living in Dover, Bureau Co., Illinois in 1880 as a servant. Lena married in Bureau in 1881. Louis supposedly died in Mar 1893.

4. Christian- b. 1840 in Switzerland. From the information that I have (none has been confirmed as I can’t find him in any censuses, etc). He married Anna Margaret Pope. They had 9 children. He died in 1919. Christian volunteered for the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. He was also known as Chris but real name was Henry Christian. Other than Civil War info, nothing is confirmed.

5. Lydia-b. 1840 in Switzerland (not sure if she is twin to Christian or if one was born early in the year and one later in the year). Lydia married John Hanney. Again she is missing in the 1860 census. In the 1870 census, they are living in Council Bluffs Ward 5, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. In the 1880 census, they are living in Smokey Hill, Davis County, Kansas. In the 1900 census, she is living with son Fred in Fragrant Hill, Dickinson County, KS. In the 1910 census, still living in Fragrant Hill, listed as Alydia, still living with son Fred. In the 1920 census, she is living with her daughter and son-in-law, Peter and Rose Gfeller also in Fragrant Hill. She is missing in 1930… Her death date is 1934.

6. Lucinda b. 1843 in Switzerland. She married in 1862 to Hugh Johnson. They lived from 1870 to 1930 in Ohio, Bureau County, Illinois. She died 21 Oct 1925 in Ohio, Bureau County. The death cert # is 0060360. Hugh died on 7 Dec 1940 in Ohio, Bureau County. The death cert # is 0000403. I am content with her… LOL

7. Amanda b. 1847 in Switzerland (I believe). She married in 1863 to Michael Strub (I have a copy of her mother giving consent for her to marry). The Strub family is living in Walnut, Bureau County, Illinois in the 1870 census. Amanda died in 1875. I haven’t found anything thus far on them but haven’t fully looked in to her.

8. Fred Baumgartner (according to his descendents his name was spelled BaumgarDner throughout his life). He was born in 1849. His birthplace is 50/50. I have found a Fred Baumgardner in the 1910 census in Iowa where he was supposed to be living. His birth date is correct (@1850). He does say his birthplace is Germany. He married Mary Elizabeth Weaver and the wife in 1910 says Elizabeth. However his year of immigration was listed as 1869 which is about 20 years off from the Baumgartners arrival.

So there you have it… or lack thereof… No one is found in the 1860 census EXCEPT my direct line Julia Elizabeth Baumgartner Arbogast. This family is just frustrating me…

ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Sadly IRAD does not have marriages for Bureau county which stinks. They also have no pre-1916 deaths which is common. Finding volunteer researchers for Bureau has proven to be tough…

Thanks!
Juls

Looking for information on Johan Jacob and Ann Barbara Baumgartner, they immigrated with at least one son, Rudolf, in 1846 from Switzerland to Wisconsin. Rudolf married a Clever Reiner in New Glarus, Wisconsin and later remarried to Susan Dinger of Monroe, Wisconsin. Rudolf had four sons, Jacob, Rudy, John and Frederick. Anyone with information on this family please let me know, my head hurts from the brick walls they keep putting in front of me!

Susan Egan
Palatka, FL

Stanwood Baumgartner
I had a great uncle named David Cummings who played football and basketball with Stanwood Baumgartner ca 1912 at Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago. They won some championships together and Stan went on to play college ball before becoming a pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics. I remember seeing at least one of hs newspaper columns. The internet has pictures of his baseball cards and pictures of his and Rita's gravestones. I must admit this surprised me as the 1930 census shows him with a wife named Bernice and her parents and an aunt all living together in Pennsylavnia. His occupation is listed as newspaper reporter since he had left baseball as a player. I think he coached in college for at least a year too. Its my understanding he was born in Galveston, Texas but I didn't know who his parents were.

Baumgartners in Baltimore, MD

I'm trying to trace my family line of Baumgartners who have been in Baltimore, MD at least back to the late 1800's. My father was John Alexander Baumgartner. His father was John Ernest Baumgartner who married Doris Englehart. My great-grandfather was also John Baumgartner and he married an Anna Leonard. I think they owned a bar in North Point in the early 1900's by the name of Bummy's. My grandfather had at least 8 brothers and sisters. I only know of one and his name is Authur Baumgarter who is still alive and living in Baltimore, MD.

Jacob BAUMGARTNER Biography, BAV<WI<MO<WI<MO<WI

From "History of Grant County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 983.

TOWN OF FENNIMORE

JACOB BAUMGARTNER, farmer, Sec. 5; P. O. Fennimore; born in Bavaria, Germany, Nov. 26, 1830; he emigrated to America with his father in June, 1850; they came directly to Wisconsin, first to Milwaukee, thence to Jefferson Co., thence to Cassville, Grant Co. July 19, 1850. Mr. Baumgartner went to St. Louis in the fall of that year, where he worked in a tannery; he learned his trade, that of a dyer, in Germany; he returned to Cassville in May, 1851, and worked for Thomas Scott, near Cassville; he reutrned to St. Louis in August of that year; in March, 1852, he came back to Cassville; he left Grant Co. again, and engaged to work for Freeman Harmony, near Janesville, as a farm hand. He was married, Oct. 23, 1852, to Mary Winterling, born in Bavaria, and came to this country with her parents in 1848, and settled in Jefferson Co. Mr. Baumgartner settled in the town of Fennimore, Sec. 3, where he lived a short time; settled on his present farm May 5, 1855; he has 377 acres of land; is engaged in grain and stock raising. Has had nine children, seven of whom are living - Louise, Nelson, Leo, Peter, Frank, Wilhelm and Cora. Mr. Baumgartner possesses much valuable information regarding the history of Grant Co. for the last thirty years. He is not only a careful observer and in possession of an excellent memory, but has also practiced the keeping of a diary, noting current events at the time of their occurrence. Both himself and wife are numbered among the most intelligent people of Grant Co.

[I am not related to this family. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

According to some of the info I have on hand, my Uncle wrote:

I remember Aunt Jenny quite well. She was very tall and distiguished looking woman with pure white hair, alittle reserved but kind and gentle. On March 21 she married J. Conrad Baumgartner, also a tall kind and distinguished person. They had one son, Stanwood.

He states that they were devoted christain scientists. He says that in the late 1930's they lived in an apartment hotel in chicago just a block or two south of Devon Ave and west of sheridan road. He says that later they moved to Denver.

Jenny Milliken is the sister of my gr grandmother Bertha who married Frank James Kromenaker

(Conrad?) Baumgartner, Joseph Keller, Elizabeth (Liza) Saineman

Elizabeth was a Baumgartner when she married Joseph Keller in Memphis, TN (Actually, Ft. Pickering, a suburb of Memphis) in 1845. Her age is listed as 20. Also in Ft. Pickering was a CONRAD BAUMGARTNER. This may have been her 1st husband, or a relative of her 1st husband. In the baptismal records of the Keller children the mother is listed as "Liza" Saineman. I believe Elizabeth (Liza) Saineman (Baumgartner) are the same person. If you have any information about a Baumgartner living in Tennessee prior to 1845, please let me know.

Conrad Baumgartner, Elizabeth Steinman

Since posting to this board on 6/23/2003, I have located a mariage of Conrad Baumgartner to Elizabeth Steinman (not Saineman) in St. Louis, MO in 1841. I believe "Saineman" is a misspelling of the name by the priest in St. Louis. I believe Conrad was Elizabeth's 1st husband, that they moved to Ft. Pickering about 1843 where he opened an architectural and surveyor's office. He must have died before 1845 when Elizabeth Baumgartner married Joseph Keller. Living in the Keller home in 1850 was an Agatha Baumgartner (63 yrs) and a Conrad Baumgartner (6 yrs.). Agatha is probably the elder Conrad's mother and the Conrad child is probably his son, and Elizabeth's stepson. Elizabeth would have been only 16 when she married Conrad, according to her age as listed on the 1850 and 1860 censuses. After the death of the Joseph Keller and Elizabeth, their daughters - Elizabeth, Josephine, and Pauliana - moved to St. Louis. There are many clues to support my suppositions, but few facts. Can you help me find out if my suppositions are correct?

In order to find birth information, I'm looking for an obit / DoD for my great-grandfather Conrad Baumgartner who worked at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis as a surgeon. I believe he died in the early 1960's, possibly in NY, but I'm not sure about that.

He was survived by his daughter, Adele B. Casper. His (first) wife's name was Mary Zepp, but they were divorced in about 1915. Mary died in 1950.

He also had another daughter, Marie, who worked at Washington University Hospital as a physical therapist. Marie later married an artist by the name of Clifford Warner.

Any leads would be appreciated.

Meredith

Ida married in 1903 in Wells Co, In to Daniel KAEHR b. 1881 Wells Co, IN d. 1960 Adams Co, IN. The sources I have found state that Ida's parents are Samuel BAUMGARTNER Sr b. 1845 d. 1875 Kansas and Elizabeth MEYER b. 1847 d. 1909. The problem is that Ida's birth date is 8 years after her father's death date. Hmmm... Can anyone tell me if I have the wrong parents and/or the wrong dates? Am happy to share information. Reverand Stover baptised their sons John born 13 May 1740 and Johann 9 May 1742 in Lebanon, PA.

These surnames could be spelled differently today or at that time periods. i.e. BAUMGARTNER, BAUMGARDNER, BUMGARDNER, BUMGARNER -- DORST DOURST or etc. Trying to find the N.C. connection to both DORST and BUMGARDNER in the early 1700's!
I have pictures of the family of Delores Reppel Baumgartener. I believe her name may be different than Baumgartner now. She had two children Cheryl and a boy who was born in 1953. They lived in the St. Louis area in the 1950's. These pictures or of her Mother, aunt and grandmother Allen. They were given to my Grandmother Squires many years ago and I would like to give them to a member of the family

Doris
