I have seen a number of BAUS families in the 1860 and 1870 censuses of NYC, both in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I am researching the connection between the BAUS and the BERNINGER names in PA, and some old family photos have led me to Brooklyn to search for these names in that area. The BERNINGERs in PA have been linked to the SCHAEFER name, too. None of this answers you query, but if I were you, I'd start checking out the NY censuses, starting with 1870 or 1880 and look for your Clara there, then in 1800 for a BAUS family, with a Clara, that might have lived close to a SCHAEFER family.
