Re: Clara Baus

Thank you for your reply, albeit my reply is very late. I have checked NY census records for BAUS but only 1900 shows Clara BAUS living with her aunt, Mary HEISELMAN. In this census, Clara is reported to be 15 in 1900. However, that doesn't match up with her birth year, 1881, engraved on her grave head stone (Mt. Olivet Cemetery NYC) purchased by her husband, Adolph SCHAEFFER, at her death in 1921.

At this time, I can find no connection with any BAUS in previous census records.

I can find no connection to the BERNINGER line in my SCHAEFFER or BAUS records. My grandfather, Adolph SCHAEFFER, was self reported to be born 16JUL1877 in Orville, Ohio (from his International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Chauffers Local 807 Union ID card dated 9SEP1926). It was reported by his half sister, Anna SCHAEFFER GONDER, that Adolph's father's surname was ESLAIR. Adolph's mother apparently married (in NYC) Mr. SCHAEFFER several years after Adolph's birth.

Do you have any connection to HEISELMAN or ESLAIR?

I checked with another researcher that has a little more information on the Baus' than I have. Elizabeth's father and brother were born in Stommeln, which makes it a good guess that she was too. Most of the immigrates to St Mary's Ridge, Monroe Co, Wisconsin came from the Stommeln area. There are a few surrounding communities where people came from too. Do you have a DOB on your Elizabeth? Mine was born 1 Apr 1801.

I noticed that I have 10 Nelles individuals in my file going back to 1683. This is not my research, so I will not post it here. I will pass on your question to the 2 researchers who have generously given me the information.

Heritage Project Underway!! Looking for Baus' from Stommeln, Germany

Hello all,

I am a part of a group of genealogists who are currently working on a book to highlight the founding members of our church, St Mary's Catholic Church, St Mary's Ridge, Monroe County, Wisconsin.

The Baus family plays a very important role in the building of our church, and their descendents are still very vital today. We would like to include as much information about this family as we can possibly find.

Herman Baus was among the 1st of 10 pioneers to St Mary's Ridge.
Herman had 4 children to our knowledge.
Marie b abt 1838-Stommeln Germany, m a Sibillae. I am looking for research on this family.
Peter Christian Baus, b abt 1842, m Marie Sibillae. I am looking for research on this family
Christ Baus, br abt 1849, Currently I have no information on any family of his.
William Baus, b 3-3-1847, m Margaret Schotten. They had 12 children. We have very little information on his children. We do have some descendents of William and Christ.

We would love your input into our project. Please email me at tzielke@charter.net so that we can begin to compare notes. I may be able to help you with church records we have, or connect you to parts of your family that you haven't been connected to yet. I will explain our project to you further so you can understand what an impact your submissions will have. Thank you.

Terri Zielke
Onalaska, WI

Sorry I am not likely to be of any help. My father was a Henry Elkner, and he was born in Baltimore to a Kathrine Elkner (Lohrey -maiden) and I do not know what my grandfather's name was, but I am thinking it was William. I was named William and my younger bother was named Henry jr. So the use of Henry and William was strong in my family. I am wondering if my grandfather could have been the son of either William or Henry the children of Adolf and Minnie. I seem to remember a great uncle named Henry and one named George.

I have seen a number of BAUS families in the 1860 and 1870 censuses of NYC, both in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I am researching the connection between the BAUS and the BERNINGER names in PA, and some old family photos have led me to Brooklyn to search for these names in that area. The BERNINGERs in PA have been linked to the SCHAEFER name, too. None of this answers you query, but if I were you, I'd start checking out the NY censuses, starting with 1870 or 1880 and look for your Clara there, then in 1800 for a BAUS family, with a Clara, that might have lived close to a SCHAEFER family.

Elisa or Eliva Bauss married Heinrich Elkner

I am looking to see if there are any other researchers out there who may have a connection to a certain Elisa or Eliva Bauss who was a wife to Heinrich Elkner ?

Elisa/Eliva and Heinrich Elkner had a son named Adolf Elkner who was born about 1851 in New York. Adolf Elkner married Minna Wannemacher who was a daughter of my great, great, great grandparents Adam and Philippine Wannemacher.

I am going to list some information below on the Elkner family. If anyone sees a connection to Elisa/Eliva Bauss please contact me by replying to this message. Thanks!

Minna Wannemacher, daughter of Adam Wannemacher and Philippine Wannemacher (maiden name Held) married Adolf Elkner, son of Heinrich Elkner and Eliva Elkner (maiden name Bauss) on November 19, 1872 in New York City. * I found the marriage register record and it has a spelling of Elisa Bauss for Adolf's mother. Minna and Adolf were both listed as 21 years old. Adolf Elkner resided at 159 2nd Avenue, New York. The person who married Minna and Adolf, was listed as M. A. Erdmann. Marriage record was recorded on November 23, 1872. Adolf Elkner was a piano maker.

Children of Adolf Elkner and Minnie/Minna Elkner (maiden name Wannemacher) include:

George Elkner, Adolf Elkner, Henry Elkner, Minnie Elkner, William Elkner
I located a cousin, son of August, that Max didn't know existed. Minnesota records have lots of info through Ancestry, com. Let me know what info you have, please. Of Peter's 14 children, 4 had died by 1900. There were twin girls who died, Adelheid, and 1 I haven't figured out yet. I may get a picture of Peter's wife, Mathilda.

Hi Benita - I'm only 18 months late in responding. My BAUS ancesters came from Holland. Sometime in the early 1900's they dropped the (ch) from the end of the name. I went through the Cincinnati City Directory to find this information. Sorry it took so long to write back.
