Thanks! I probably should have updated my old 2007 post. I did see this record last year. I had already done enough work on him to prove it without the death record, but it's always nice to have direct evidence. Sarah Bausman's (Isaac's mother and Reinhart's wife) record is also in this database - she died 16 Mar. 1880.

I too am tracking Bausman through Hester Patterson Carroll, daughter of Peter Hull Patterson and Elizabeth Bausman. Elizabeth birthdate 13 October 1796, Allegheny Co., PA. My info says her parents arrived from Holland shortly before she was born. She had a brother Antis H. There were 9 children altogether. Louise, Emaline, Antis H, Lemuel Bausman, Onias Augustus, Hester, Ann Eliza, William Wirt, Elmira Eliza. Maybe there's a clue there somewhere.

John Boussum (abt 1785 to abt 1845) is buried in Parks Groninger cemetery near Rockfield, IN, Carroll County. There is one marker for both he and his wife Mary Ann or Anna, nearby is daughter Catherine (Boussum) Bush and some of her family. Also, near the John Boussum marker is a stone for David Boussum. This is the John Boussum listed in the 1840 census on the same page or the next page is (I believe) his son, John (Henry) Boussum. John H. Boussum/Bausum/Bousum is my great great Grandfather. He is supposed to be buried in Carroll County, Burlington, IN at this point I've not been able to find his gravesite. I believe John Boussum (1785-1845) is the Tyrone, PA census.

Genealogical Records Committee Report: Washington, D.
Interesting!

As to 1850: In Upper St. Clair Twp, Allegheny Co, is my Isaac: Household of Isaac Bausman, 27, farmer, b. Pa.:
Catherine Bausman, 28
Olivia Bausman, 3
Caroline Bausman, 2
Agnes Bausman, 4/12
all b. Pa.
(roll 748, p. 222, dw 66, fam 67, taken 21 Aug. 1850)
[Just above are households of John Williams, probable uncle, and Isaac Williams, probable 1st cousin (probably John's son)

BTW, the Olivia shown above was the key to my identifying that Isaac as a son of Reinhart - she was a niece in the home of some of Reinhart's other children in 1880 (she was also counted in her parents' home).

An item in an obscure genealogical journal, probably written by one of my Isaac's nephews, says Isaac (calls him Capt.) lived (this was about 1891) in Wyoming (the state, not the valley in Pa.). I couldn't find him there, but did find one of his sons.

My Isaac died after the 1900 census, when he was a widower in Pittsburgh (and shown as Bussman). Birth in that census shown as Apr. 1823.

Clearly we have 2 different Isaacs. I'll have to remember that when I get back to it. Thanks for the info. Pat

Re: Bausman Family Bible

Another genealogical conundrum:) My Isaac Bausman was born in PA on 3 March 1823 and married Mary Ann Shippenger in Greene County, Ohio on 22 February 1855. Mary Ann was born in Pennsylvania on 19 July 1832. They moved from Ohio to Indiana to Iowa where they died in 1903 and 1925, respectively. They had seven children, two born in Ohio, three born in Indiana and the last two born in Iowa. Isaac was a farmer. Their second child, Benjamin Franklin Bausman, born 26 October 1857 in or around Dayton, Ohio, married Amelia Mary Bumbaugh, born 27 February 1860 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Amelia's father was my ggg grandfather. I don't see any of this criss-crossing with the messages on the message board. I cannot locate my Isaac Bausman in the 1850 census but if you search the 1860 census you will find him and you will find the other Isaac Bausman living in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The latter never lived anywhere other than Pennsylvania.

The only Isaac Bau* in the 1850 census - in either Ohio or Pennsylvania - is in Douglass Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in a "farming" family. However, while the Isaac Bau* reflected here as 25 years of age could be him the name is spelled "Bauman" - there are three households, i.e. John Bauman (age 48), Isaac Bauman (age 37) and Jacob Bauman (age 46), etc., with Isaac Bauman, age 25 years, being the son of John Bauman. Unfortunately, this Isaac is still here in Montgomery County, PA in the 1860 census.

There is an Isaac Boughman in Richland County, Ohio in 1850 who is recorded as being born in Pennsylvania circa 1822 and married to a Sarah who, I suppose, could have died and Isaac then married Mary Ann -- it does seem a bit odd that he did not marry until 32 years of age. But that's a long shot.

A true conundrum if ever there was such a thing:)

There is also a mention of a John Bausman who would be around the age of Frank. Rumour in the family that Bausman was spelled Bousman at some point.

Our family went by Boussum and lived in Carrol Co Indiana. John Bousum was recorded there in the 1840 census, he being between 50-60 yrs with a female between 40-50 and a girl of 5-10 yrs.

In 1850, the following households are at Carroll Co IN:

John Bausman, 32, PA
Elizabeth, 28, VA
Asberry, 7, IN
Elizabeth, 7, IN
James K, 4, IN
Nancy E, 4/12, IN

David Bausman, 25, PA
Lydia, 22, PA
Alexander, 2, IN

William Bausman, 23, PA
Mary E, 17, DEL

along with a married sister and mother:

John Bush, 28, PA
Catherine, 28, PA
Elizabeth, 1, IN
Mary Bousum, 57, PA
Saml Bousum, 22, PA

By 1860, they seem to have adopted the Boussum spelling. Our ancestor is William. I came across information that he was born in Perry Co PA.

I believe that the John (b: bet 1780-1790) recorded in the 1840 census was the husband of Mary (b:1793 PA) and father to John (b:1818 PA), Catherine (b:1822 PA), David (b:1825 PA), William (b:1827 PA) and Samuel (b:1828 PA).

I found a John Bausum living at Tyrone, Perry Co, PA in 1830 and another John Bausum at Saville, Perry Co, PA. Do you know if one of these Johns would have been the patriarch John of the Bausman/Bausman/Bousum/Boussum family of Carroll Co Indiana? Also, how would this John connect to the previous generation?

I am interested in this line. I found your corrections to the census records for misspellings and am glad I found these posts. I am related to Robert S. Williams. Sarah Williams Bausman's brother. My mother has more information on the will in question and actually has a copy of the original I believe.
We would love to talk to you and share what we have found.
Robin Landgren
Dlandgren@aol.com
or
Nancy McMullen
Raymcmulln@aol.com

Obituary of Caroline Theresa Bausman says "Died Bausman, on the 9th of November 1873, Caroline T. Bausman, daughter of the late Major John and Elizabeth Bausman, late of Lancaster, Pa, aged 63 years and 9 months"; Page 5; The Baltimore Gazette; Friday, November 14, 1873 issue; Microfilm #M2190; Baltimore County Public Library; Towson, Maryland.
Included at end of obituary is a poem from her loving son J.G.B. who I believe is my great-grandfather John George Bausman, born 1844 in Baltimore County, MD. Caroline & John George not found in any Federal Census for 1850,1860,1870. Need help locating proof of relationship & JGB's father. His death certificate says father John Edward Bausman but that information not found anywhere else. JGB lived in Owings Mills area and moved to Baltimore City where he died in 1911. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Frederick Bausman, son of Nicholas Bausman

Barb Walker and I have communicated a bit since these messages, and have concluded:

Frederick Bausman was the son of Johann Nicolaus aka Nicholas and Dorothy or Dorothea Bausman, and not of Jacob Bausman. This conclusion is based on the following:

1) Allegheny Co., Pa., Orphans’ Court Dockets: V. 1, 1789-1820; film #866,288; p. 89 #383: Dorothy Bausman. March 3, 1804. The Petition of Dorothy Bausman widow of Nicholas Bausman late of St. Clair Township dec'd. stating that the said Nicholas left issue four children three of whom are minors under the age of fourteen years, to wit, Frederick, Elizabeth[, and] Rhinehart Curtis [sic, an error, should be middle-named Antis or Antes] and have no guardians to take care of their persons and estates. The petitioner therefore prayed the Court to appoint Guardians; which prayer the Court granted & appointed John Wilkins as their Guardian until they shall severally arrive to the age of fourteen years.” [Note that the fourth child was Michael, who was over 14 and who appeared in a separate proceeding on the same day.]

2) Allegheny Co Orphans' Court dockets 1789-1905, V. 1, 1789-1820; FHL film #866,288; p. 146: On the 2d Saturday of Nov 1810 [calculated as 10 Nov 1810, using online perpetual calendar]: "No. 630. Frederick Bousman. A minor above the age of Fourteen years Came into Court & by his petition stated that his Father Nicholas Bousman lately died & that he has no person to take care of his person & estate & prayed leave of the Court to make choice of a guardian. The prayer of the Petitioner was granted & he made choice of Gen. Presley Neville. The choice was approved of by the Court & he was appointed his guardian to take care of his person and estate until he arrives at the age of twenty one years." Note also that Dr. Frederick Bausman named a child Presley Neville Bausman.

2) Although Barbara Taylor did, in Aug. 1999, post a message saying that Frederick was a child of Jacob [Bausman] and Elizabeth Saam, the following month, she sent an e-mail to Jim Keebler (frequent poster on this board) in which she says that Frederick, who “married Sara Beltzhoover,” was a son of Nicholas and that the data “came to my Dad (born in 1892) in 1970 from his cousin who was very reliable” (copy of e-mail kindly sent to me by Jim Keebler in 2003).

3) Also: we know that Jacob Bausman’s widow, Elizabeth, married, second, Jacob Beltzhoover (Allegheny Co Orphans' Court dockets 1789-1905, V. 1, 1789-1820; FHL film #866,288, pp, 176-77, #740). They had a daughter Sarah/Sara, who was the Sarah Beltzhoover who later married Dr. Frederick Bausman (proved by her father’s will, Allegheny Co. will packets, on FHL film #1,653,762, 4:242, #58). If Frederick had been the son of Jacob, this would have been a marriage of half-siblings, which is highly unlikely.

4) Frederick Bausman is shown on the line directly below his mother, then Dorothy Troth (also Trough or Troff) in the 1830 census in St. Clair Twp, Allegheny Co. (roll 144, p. 214, 5th and 6th lines from bottom)

Pat
Re: Desc of Johann Michael Baussmann aka Michael Bausman Lancaster PA

Pat, I'm confused. If you recall, my husband is a descendant of Jacob BAUSMAN d. 1797, Nicolaus's brother. On 4 Aug 1999, Barbara Taylor posted that she was a descendant of "Dr. Fredrick Bausman married Sara Beltzhoover, he was a child of Jacob and Elizabeth Saam." The article you quote says about Nicolaus "Four children survived him, Dr. Frederick Bausman, Squire R. A. Bausman, Michael, and Elizabeth, wife of the Rev. Peter Patterson of Sioux City, Iowa. The descendants of Dr. Frederick Bausman who married Sarah Beltzhoover reside at present in Virginia" implying that Frederick was a child of Nicolaus. Have you seen anything to support Barbara's statement?

Barb

Desc of Johann Michael Baussmann aka Michael Bausman Lancaster PA

The following is from an obscure journal, a snippet of which turned up in a Google Books search. Then located at NEHGS in Boston:

"Editor: I notice a request for information about the Antes, Bausman, and Beltzhoover families of Allegheny county Pennsylvania. The Bausmans are descendants of John Michael Baussmann, born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, in the year 1712, who landed at Philadelphia in the year 1748. He came to this country in a ship called the Judith of which James Tait was master. He settled at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he was master of the barracks [maybe another Bausman?] and died in 1791. Four of his sons, Jacob, Nicholas, Frederick, and Lorenzo, moved to Allegheny, then Washington county, in the year 1783 [Jacob was there prior to the Rev. War]. They were among the founders of the Smithfield street German church and eventually became very wealthy men.
Jacob Bausman married Elizabeth Saam, daughter of an English soldier at Fort Pitt. A. L. [Abner Lacock] Bausman, D.D.S., A. C. Bausman of Minneapolis, and William Bausman, a well-known San Francisco editor, are some of his descendants; also Rev. Joseph Bausman of Rochester Pennsylvania.
John Nicholas Bausman married Anna Maria Antes of Westmoreland county, and when she died he married her sister Dorothea. Four children survived him, Dr. Frederick Bausman, Squire R. A. Bausman, Michael, and Elizabeth, wife of the Rev. Peter Patterson of Sioux City, Iowa. The descendants of Dr. Frederick Bausman who married Sarah Beltzhoover reside at present in Virginia. Captains R. A. Bausman of St. Louis and Isaac W. Bausman of Wyoming are among the descendants of Squire Bausman. Some of his descendants still reside in Pittsburg. It is not known whether Michael [son of Nicholas] married or not, as he left Pennsylvania at an early day.
Nothing is known of the descendants of Frederick, third son of Michael Bausman, unless they are the Bausmans of Allegheny City, Pennsylvania.
The descendants of Lorenzo Bausman reside in the southern counties of Virginia.
The Antes family of Westmoreland county is supposed to have died out.
The Beltzhoovers are the descendants of Melchior Beltzhoover, who came to this country in 1755, and still reside in Allegheny county.
J. L. Bausman, St. Louis, Mo."
(Magazine of American History, 25(1891):340-41, reply to query on pp. 179-80 of the same volume)

Square brackets mine.

This interested me because it's the only place I've ever seen the name/origin of the first wife of Nicholas Bausman, who must have been the mother of his son Michael.

The Michael Bausman, progenitor, is Johann Michael Baussmann. He was born in Wörrstadt, Germany, now in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, in 1712, son of Johann Lorentz and Maria Margretha (Krahmer) Baussmann. The records of this parish are on LDS film. He married Maria Margretha Priesterbach, banns in Wörrstadt, in 1742; a shoemaker in the town of Lancaster. In addition to the sons listed above, they had son born in Wörrstadt, Johann Michael (also a showmaker), known as Michael in Lancaster; he died there about 1777. An son Johann Martin was b. before immigration and died shortly after arrival. This family was Lutheran (not Reformed) in Lancaster, PA, and there are many church records for them in that church, about half of which are indexed and printed as Pausman/Paussmann. Johann Nicolaus aka Nicholas was b. Lancaster 1749. Frederick may be the unnamed child bp. Lancaster in 1761, sponsor was a Johann Fridrich Schafer. I have not yet found Jacob's birth record; it does not seem to be in Wörrstadt (he is said to have been born in Germany); possibly born in his mother's town, the adjoining Wendelsheim.

Also, here is more evidence that Isaac W. Bausman was the son of Reinhart Bausman (called "Squire R. A. Bausman" in this article, which is interesting): Article says he was of Wyoming (written in 1891) Isaac W. Bausman was in Pittsburgh in 1900; however I found his son Barnes F. Bausman and family in Wyoming in 1900 and 1910.

The "Captain" R. A. Bausman discussed is probably Reinhart A. Bausman (ca. 1825-1905) of St. Louis, son of Reinhart. This man had two sons: James E. and Joseph O. Could one of them have been the "J. L.," author of the above?

Pat

Hello Amanda,

Your Henry could be the son of Samuel Bausman (1815-88).

Names listed with Samuel in cemetery transcription:
Charles F., 1856-1856
Emily K., 1849-1856
Harriet B., 1859-1862
Henrietta C., 1824-1909
Katherine, 1904-1911
Samuel C., 1866-1939
Cemetery Inscriptions from Union Dale Cemetery (Division One) (formerly Mount Union & Hilldale Cemeteries, 2200 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15212; USGenWeb site for Allegheny Co)

In 1850 census, Allegheny City, Allegheny Co, Penn.: Henry C. Bausman, 3 and Henrietta Bausman, in home of above Samuel (Allegheny Ward 4, Allegheny, Pennsylvania; Roll: M432_744; Page: 187; ancestry.com Image: 374)

I don't have anything else on these people and have not tried to do anything else. I have them in my "misc." Bausman database and I am not aware of any connection with my Bausmans (Johann Lorentz Baußmann (b. 1686, d. Wörrstadt, Reinland-Pfalz, Ger. 1721), Johann Michael (b. Wörrstadt 1712, immigrant to Lancaster Co PA, 1748), Johann Nicholas (b. Lancaster Co 1749, d. Pittsburgh ca. 1803), Reinhart Antes (d. Allegheny Co., PA, 1859), George W. (b. Allegh. Co., d. St. Louis 1876), George Washington (b. Pittsburgh ca. 1856, d. CO 1903), Alexander Musgrove (b. Mississippi, d. CA 1933), Willard George (b. CO 1905, d. CA 1944).

Hope this gets you started, Pat
Reinhart BAUSMAN, father of Isaac BAUSMAN ?

Tom –

Have you found anything further on Isaac and Catherine Bausman?

I have been looking at Isaac. I think he may be the eldest son of Reinhart and Sarah (Williams) Bausman. I came to this conclusion because of the presence of Olivia Bausman, as “niece” of Charles Bausman in the 1880 census in Pittsburgh. I searched other census years and found a matching Olivia as the daughter of Isaac and Catharine (including 1880, where she seems to have been counted in both households). Charles Bausman was the son of Reinhart and Sarah; others in the home were Charles’s single sisters, Sarah and Agnes. (I also see Isaac and Caroline in 1900, age 77, in Pittsburgh, in addition to the years you listed in your post.)

Sarah (Williams) Bausman is probably the daughter of Isaac and Agnes (Shawhan) Williams, although I have not yet seen good proof of that. There are at least two transcriptions of the Bausman/Williams 1821 marriage, one shows “Meinhard” Bausman marrying Sarah Williams and the other shown Reinhart marrying “Jane” Williams. Some Internet sites say that Isaac’s 1853 will names daughters “Sarah Bausman” and Dorale, wife of Reinhart Bausman (which is odd). The will is available on film, but I haven’t yet looked at it. It would also help to find the original Trinity Episcopal church record of the marriage to find out what it really says. But, promising evidence is the use of the not-so-common name Agnes in these families and the use of Isaac as the name of the first son, after the wife’s father. Note that Isaac Bausman was Isaac W. Bausman in 1870 and 1900; the W could be for Williams.

Isaac Bausman was born, according to the 1900 census, in Apr. 1823, which agrees to the age calculated from the various census records (1822-24). If that is true, he fits neatly into a gap between Reinhart and Sarah’s 28 Sep. 1821 marriage and the calculated birth of their son Nicholas in 1824-25.

If these parents for Reinhart’s wife prove correct, there is a mountain of data on the net on the Shawhan family, much of it with good source citations.

The following is the ancestry of Reinhart Bausman:

Reinhart Bausman, b. 1799-1800 (calculated from age at death), son of Nicholas and Dorothy/Dorothea (Antes) Bausman, d. 28 Apr. 1859 in South Pittsburgh (abstract of Pittsburgh Dispatch death notice). Relationship to Nicholas and Dorothy proved by Allegheny Co. Orphans’ Court records. Married Sarah (probably Williams) (see above; census records). Sarah died in Pittsburgh Mar. 1800 (Mortality Schedule). Reinhart was a merchant and was active in local politics.

Johann Nicholas Bausman/Baussman/Baussmann (transcribed in church records at least half the time as Paussmann), aka Nicholas, b. 8 Dec. 1749, bp. Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster Bor., Lancaster Co., Pa., 14 Dec. 1749, son of Johann Michael, aka Michael Bausman (same variants) and Maria Margaretha (--); d. abt. 1803-04 in Allegheny Co (prob. [Lower?] St. Clair Twp.]; married (probably 2d) Dorothy/Dorothea Antes, daughter of Reinhart and Catharine (--) Antes. Supposed to have married first Anna Maria, another daughter of Reinhart Antes (from an obscure periodical of which I’ve only seem a partial paragraph); I’m sure he did have a first wife by that given name, with whom he had a son Johann Nicholas (baptism and Orphans’ Court records). Nicholas probably lived in Lancaster Co. until about 1782 (Rev. War records and church records), and then he is in what became Allegheny Co. He is often found in records with his (probably quite a bit older?) brother Jacob, who ran a ferry across the Monongahela River to Pittsburgh and was a large landowner; Jacob shows up much more often in the western Pa. records than does Nicholas. Dorothy remarried a Trough, probably Peter, between 1803 and 1808 (her father’s will; census records) and was still living at the time of the 1830 census.

Johann Michael Bausman (same variants, along with Bauszmann) is likely the man who immigrated in 1748 on the Judith. The SAR application of Rev. Joseph H. Bausman, descendant of Michael’s son Jacob, says Michael was born in 1712 and married in 1742, that Maria Margaretha’s surname if Priesterbach, and that the family originated in Wörrstadt [Kreis Alzey-Worms, Rheinland-Pfalz], Germany. This couple had a [presumed] son Johann Michael, who died abt. 1777 in Lancaster Co., and seems to have been born about 1736; if so, they must have married earlier than 1742. The 1777 estate proceedings in Lancaster Co. are for this younger Michael, whose wife was Elizabeth. They are easily distinguished in the Trinity Church records. The parents are last seen in the Trinity Church records in 1787. A DAR GRC report (Washington DC Chapter, s. 1, v. 11), apparently from data from Cooke Bausman (another Jacob descendant), says Maria Margaretha died in 1792. There is no burial record at Trinity for them, so possibly they moved to a different area with a child before they died. Both Michael Sr. and Jr. were shoemakers or cordwainers in Lancaster Bor. (tax records). The Wörrstadt records are on film, which I am about to look at. Michael and Maria Margaretha make their first appearance in the church records in Mar. 1749 (sic, I am not yet clear on what calendar was in use in early Pennsylvania?).

Johann Lorenzo and Maria Margaretha (Kramer) Bauszmann are said to be Johann Michael’s parents. Have done no work on this; comes from the above-mentioned SAR application and DAR GRC.

I would be interested to know whether you have further info. on your Isaac and what you think of my proposed parents for him?

Pat

My husband is related to Jacob through his son Adam and grandson Abner Lacock. I would be most interested in sharing information with others researching this line. In particular, I'm trying to confirm Jacob's paternal grandparents (the parents of John Michael Bausman b. 1712) as well as Jacob's siblings and other children. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Re: Wm. Bausman

Celine,
In a Licking County, Ohio history there is a biography of James Bozman whose father William left for California in 1850 and died soon after. I'm descended from this William through his other son, Madison. I'm sure it's possible that William abandoned his family in Ohio and headed west in search of gold, and didn't die shortly after 1850 after all.
I've also been told that a genealogist hired many years ago discovered that our line of Bozmans were actually Bausmans of German descent from Pennsylvania.
From your post, it sounds like you're not really sure of William's story.
Jeanne

While I am not a direct descendant, I would like to have photocopies of any information in the bible (with copy of title page) I would be willing to pay any fees you may incur. Or if you have a scanner and could send the pages as an attachment to email that would work.
