Mary L. Knowlton (Mrs. Thomas) Baxter

Mary L. Knowlton, dau of Newell and Sophia Wallace Knowlton, was supposedly born in New York state and grew up in Caledonia Co., VT, Essex Co., NY, and Rutland Co., VT, as her father moved from place to place. Mary supposedly married a Thomas Baxter July 21, 1856, place unknown, and had children between 1857 and 1876 named Adelaide S., Grosvener, George W., N. J., Anna M., Lula, and Thomas S. (source, Chas. Stocking's History of Knowltons . . . .) However, I have been unable to find this family in any census or vital record, using familysearch, rootsweb, and ancestry. I suspect the last name is incorrect but have searched on the odder first names also without turning up anything.

Re: Ambrose Baxter

I have recently found a Nathaniel Baxter in old Bute Co, NC records (only existed from 1764-79). I am not a Baxter researcher, but believe my Duncan family is out of Westmoreland Co, Va. Now, Within a 2-3 mile radius of my Duncans in Bute Co are Newmans, Doziers, Walkers, Redmans, Colemans, Selfs, Wheelers and perhaps other surnames of families that I'm positive are coming out of Westmoreland Co, Va. Recently I got to noticing that Nathaniel Baxter seem to be appearing in records of these families. making me think they knew each other prior to arriving in NC. Note: His name is also spelled Backster in some of these records. I have plotted these folks in Bute on a map using creek names and they all appear to be living within a few miles of each other, right on the VA/NC line. My Ancestor was "Ambrose" Harrison Duncan, living on Smiths Creek in Bute Co, NC. He is believed to be son of John & Mary (unkn) Duncan, son of Peter, son of John, son of Peter the Elder(b.c. 1633) of Nomini Creek, Westmoreland Co Va.
There is also a John & James Baxter in this County. Nathaniel Baxter appears to be living near a Blanchflower Duncan Sr, who is a known son of Henry, son of Peter Duncan of Nomini Creek, Westmoreland Co, Va.
If you go to this Web site and type in Baxter/Backster ,etc... or surnames of families mentioned above you will find him.

I would be very interested in whether you think he is descended from your Ambrose Baxter of Westmoreland.

wfred.duncan@gmail.com

http://www.ncgenweb.us/bute/search.htm

Re: Misc. NY Baxter records

In looking over some papers on the Drake family I received from Westchester Co.,NY Gen. Soc. I found a Rebecca Baxter, daughter of Thomas Baxter. She was married to Jasper Drake (Benjamin 3, Joseph 2, Samuel 1) According to this paper they had sons:
Benjamin Drake
Augustine Drake married Susannah unknown d. 1791
Budd Drake

If you look at the wills of Oglesby Drake and Augustine Drake you will find additional Baxter connects. There is also a Quimby connection as well.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jimmylewis...
This site answers some questions about Leanna Brown Lewis and Aaron Baxter. Leanna and Aaron were neighbors on the 1830 census. This raises some questions because the information (Aaron's birth year) is different from what my cousin had in his documentation. He spend several summers going from Texas to Tennessee to Maryland tracing this line. The above website is interesting reading.

You have done a wonderful job compiling descendants. I have a couple of changes/additions for you. Amanda Lynn Mott divorced from Jeffery James Lopez in 1996. She married Jamie Don Talley October 24, 1998. Jamie Talley legally adopted Brandon James Lopez and changed Brandon's name to Brandon James Talley. This couple have two more children: Abigale Katelene Talley and Cooper Ryan Talley.
Also, Ryan Alan Mott died of cancer, August 26, 1998, at the age of 19.
Keep up the good work and good luck in your research.
Shirley Baxter Mott

This might seem like a strange question...

Did your grandfather, William Herbert McCutcheon, "leave" your grandmother before 1920?
