MANSFIELD: Elizabeth B. McGrew, formerly of Lucas, Ohio and more recently of Primrose, Mansfield, Ohio died January 11, 2014 after a short illness
. Elizabeth was born August 24, 1917, daughter of the late Rev. Howard T. and Mary L. (Ledman) Bay.
She graduated from Muskingum College with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and her elementary teaching certification from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.
She came to Mansfield, Ohio as the first Home Demonstration Agent, Agricultural Extension Service OSU serving from 1941-1943.
She taught Home Economics at Pleasant City, Ohio (Guernsey County) and at Lexington High School during WW II.
She married the late Chester N. McGrew in 1943.
Mrs. McGrew retired from the Lucas School System as a 6th grade teacher.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served two terms as elder.
She was at one time an active member of the Women's Federation, American Association of University Women and the Astewela Garden Club.
She was a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar and a member of P.E.O. Chapter CJ.
She was a 4-H advisor for 15 years and a 4-H project judge for 10 years.
In her retirement years she quilted Linus Project Crib Quilts.
She is survived by one son, two daughters and families, Drs. David and Kathryn (Blocher) McGrew of Oxford, Ohio, Margaret McGrew Martin of Lucas, Ohio, Jonathan K. and Janet McGrew Smith of Loudon, TN.
Grandchildren include Suzanne (McGrew) and Jonathan McQuade, Kate McGrew, John and Sarah (Delp) McGrew, Laura Martin, Andrew and Trisha (Hertzler) Martin, Jack Smith and Jeff Smith. She had two great grandchildren, Cooper and Carter Martin.
In addition, she is survived by two brothers, Dr. Robert L. Bay of Delta, Ohio and John T. and Barbara Bay of Wilmington, OH.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester N. McGrew, a sister Margaret (Bay) Betzel and brother-in-law Fred Betzel, brother David S. Bay, son-in-law Richard L. Martin, and granddaughter Lisa Lynn Martin.
Calling hours will be Monday, January 13, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church, 399 Trimble Road, Mansfield, OH.
Visitation will also be observed the hour prior to the funeral service.
A graveside service will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Lucas, at 3 pm.
Memorial contributions to the Scholarship Fund at First Presbyterian Church or to the Richland Rural Life Center may be made through the funeral home.
