Hi Tony,

Thank you so much for the response, I really appreciate it and you have already given me some info that I didn't have.
I didn't know about John, that is excellent info.
Sarah Durell was my paternal ggg grandmother and my problems are also caused by the numerous different spellings of Baylis.
Any more info that you can find Tony would be fantastic
Many thanks
Sally

Thank you very much! As you can see I am very interested in this family line.

One of the questions I have regarding your ancestor of Knox Co. is about Elizabeth Jones. I have been unable to find evidence of her other than through family trees. You have done a great deal of research and I am wondering if you have found a marriage record or any other evidence of her?

My e-mail is : bribling@earthlink.net

I have a WEB site at http://www.grandmahudson.tribalpages.com

The Web site is about the ancestors of my grandfather Boss Bayless. My mother was a Bayless.

Footnote.com has many images of original documents including for the Rev. War, muster rolls and pension records. I have collected many of these images. I have just been unable to find any John BOYLES who looked as though he might have been BAYLES. It is quite possible but without more information, I just do not like to assume he is "my" John.

Many Thanks!

Regarding John Bayles (1746-1823), he is also my direct ancestor. When I first visited his gravesite at the Cherokee cemetery about 10 years ago, I was skeptical of the DAR marking with the name of "Boyles" at his grave. I was aware that there were many Boyles family members in that area, even some who married into the Bayles family. So I wrote for war records from NARA for Bayles/Boyles. I received copies of company muster rolls and company payroll cards dating from 1776-1779. From these 65+ cards, several were recorded as "Bayles", others appear to be "Boyles" or Boyls, and many could be Boyles or Bayles. Since these cards had been copied from the original lists, I stopped by the National Archives near Atlanta and viewed the originals on microfilm. Company muster roll and company payroll for July 1779, company muster roll for September 1779, and company muster roll for December 1778 are recorded as "Bayles".

My maiden name was "Bayless" and I have seen it several times when one couldn't tell whether the second letter was "A" or an "O". The rolls would have been recorded by officers of his company, and he probably never saw them. I understand in the day before computers that if a soldier's name was recorded incorrectly, it remained that way until the end of his service.

With the fact that many Washington Co. family histories state that John served in this war and with this evidence (small as it may be)from the NARA data, and the fact that I don't find a John Boyles in Virginia that would be a possibility, I feel that this could certainly be John Bayles, who joined his family in Washington Co., after his service was completed.

As far as John Bayless of Knox Co. is concerned, I was writing about my ggggrandfather (1773-1858). He would have only been 8 years of age when the Revolutionary War started, so we may be talking about two different people. I haven't been able to view the site you suggested as yet, but will gladly take a look at it.

Thanks for your comments.

Re: Knox county tn. Bayless

I am sorry to disagree but John BAYLESS/BAYLESS (1746-1823) probably did not fight in the Revolution. There is no such record. The John of Knox Co. who did fight is unidentified. I do have a copy of his Pension papers which you can see at Footnote.com.

This idea has been around a long time since some of the earlier researchers made a mistake regarding the Revolutionary service of John Bayles (1746-1823) of Washington Co. (husband of Ann Price). One lady claimed that John served under the name John Broyles. There is no proof of that either. There were people in Washington Co. named Broyles so there is no reason to suspect that a man of that name was actually John Bayles.

If you have any proof that John of Washington Co. served in the Revolution, moved to Knox Co. and then returned to Washington Co. to die, I want to know of it. John was an Elder in the Cherokee Baptist Church. It is highly unlikely that he went to Knox Co. Also, he is buried at Cherokee Church whereas the John of Knox Co. died in Knox Co. (burial place unknown).

John Bayles (1746-1823) was my ancestor.

I'm looking for information on my great great grandparents:

William H. Bayless b. Sept 1858 Arkansas
Mary J. (or T.?) Bayless b. Nov. 1868 Texas

They lived in Childress, TX for awhile before moving to Arizona. I am not sure if there is any relation to the Bayless Baptist preachers I've seen in my research.

I show Williams' father was born in Alabama and his mother in Louisiana, but no other info is found.

Any info would be helpful!!

I now have this Deposition. William C. BAYLESS was the son of James BAYLESS and Narcissa HICKS. Wm. C. married Florence N. PECK, daughter of Wiley Hawkins PECK and ?. She was the granddaughter of Judge Jacob PECK of Jefferson Co., TN, and granddaughter of Judge Adam PECK, a pioneer of Jefferson Co.

Family information in this Deposition does not include the name of Florence's mother who died c. 1860 at the time of her daughter's birth. Florence's parents were married in CA, moved to LA, where the mother died and then returned to Jefferson Co., TN. Wiley PECK left his infant daughter with his sister Margaret PECK and left to join the war. Wiley was killed in the war and Margaret adopted her niece.

The Law suit concerned lands that were left to the PECK heirs. Florence was the only surviving heir and had originally inherited one fifth of the lands.

Professor W. T. RUSSELL had administered the estate and seems to have tricked W. C. BAYLESS out of some of the land with no compensation.

I do not know the outcome of the suit.

If you can ID the mother of Florence N. (Peck) BAYLESS, I would like to know it. She may have lived in Yuba CO., CA.

Thanks!
Barbara Ribling

Thank you for your response. After looking into your family further, and comparing it to info I have on William Sandiford family born 1812 (someone else said born 1821)in TN, I do not see a connection. As far as the searching I have done, the family I am looking for is as follows;
William Standifer Bailey b. 1812 or 1821 TN
m. Caroline E. Hicks b. 1822 TN
one of their sons;
William Standifer Bailey b. 1852 GA( so far no proff this is where he is born) Changed his name to Ben Ridley in 1877. Died 1930 Dallas TX
another son;
Lewis Birdwell Bailey b. 1858 d. 1877 shot to death.

I was interested in your William's middle name of Saniford(I think thats how you spelled it), thinking there was a connection.
But I think its only coincidence. Yours probably got the middle name from the Bragg side, since Sarah Bragg named one of her children Saniford.

Once again thanks for your response. My husband heads back to Afganistan in Aug. Stay safe. Mary Bailey

I am in Afghanistan right now, without access to my files. However, I can tell you that I have a death certificate for William's son, James Walter Bayless, that has his father and mother as William Bayless and Gilly Powers. I confirmed this in the Madison, Alabam census records. You can find William and Bartley in the 1850 Madison county, Alabama census.

When I get home I can look into my records further for more detailed information. This is just off the top of my head (I hope I remembered it correctly). Please feel free to contact me for more information and we can compare date when I return (I should be coming home in about three more months). jason_and_jessica@yahoo.com

W. C. Bayless vs W.T. Russell Deposition - Tennessee

I have a 1915, original deposition of W.T. Russell, et al versus W.C. Bayless, et al. "in the chancery court at Newport, Tennessee transferred by consent to the Chancery Court at Dandridge, Tennessee." My mother found it years ago at a yard sale and gave it to me because "I liked that kind of stuff." I love genealogy, but this isn't our family. I have no use for it, but I've hung onto it all this time, wondering what I should do with it. Must have been 15 - 20 years. In cleaning out, I ran across it again and decided to offer it to the first person who emails me at wcraft@bellsouth.net. I only ask that you pay shipping, which should be around $5 media for a US address. It weighs over 7 lbs., so media would certainly be the most economical. If you're outside the US, we'd have to figure the shipping cost.

I haven't read any of the deposition and don't know what it's about or others it involves. It seems to be in three parts. Some of the pages are torn and it's possible it's not complete, but I don't believe much is missing.

I'll also be posting this on the Russell board and on the other site's forum. I will post here when it's spoken for. Being of specific interest, it could be some time before anyone asks for it, so even if this post is old, if I didn't say it's gone, please ask!

Barbra I know this is an old message, but I hope you still have the same email address.
Through DNA we are an exact match to John Bayles. We are trying to figure out where we fit in. There is one line that we are having trouble with: It is:
John Bayles b 1642 m. Ruth Rusco
John Bayles b. 1671 m. Elizabeth
d. Dec, 3, 1719/1730 had two children settled in
Westchester, New York. One of these children was a
daughter, I believe the other to be a son.
Do you have any information on this son, if so I would appreciate you sharing.
Thanks in advance
Jeanette Bailey
Hello Again,
Actually we found out the information we needed. It seems that Johns son (1671) I will call him the John III had a son I will call John IV, married an Abigail, most likely a Skidmore, but we could never find the marriage records to a Smith that would have confirmed her being called Abigail Smith in her fathers will. He died in 17 Feb. 1736.(her father) John died suddenly, without a will in Jan. of 1730, they married in Dec. of 1729, according to the genealogy of Isacc Platt, Abigail Bayley's 3rd husband.
Their sources were from Church records and N.Y. Wills , and Marriage records.
But the long and short of it was that John the IV and Abigail had no issue. So we cannot descend from him.
Jeanette

Hi, I'm Lurale Brumfield
I was browsing thru family names and came across this so I looked up the Brumfield that Martha Jane Bayless married on 10-28-1885 John Ellis Brumfield (s. of Jessie Brumfield and Harriett Ellis) born 8-21-1853 in Randolph co. Ind. They had 4 children and She lived to be 101.5 years (d. 3-22-1957) old buried Jetmore, Ks.
As I kept on reading I found that Johns younger sister Pheobe Eldora b. 12-1-1862 Jericho, & married on 8-10-1882 a George w. Bayless (s. of George w Bayless & Nancy Senteny). They had 4 children also.
Pheobe had red hair-which has been passed down from Thomas Brumfield, 1st generation imigrant, Pheobe is 5th generation, I am 9th generation and I have red hair also.
I wondered if the red hair went thru your line as well? My line is thru Jesse younger brother Stanton who both had red hair.
I have source information if you need it.
I would like to know if the red hair showed up in your family.

Thanks Lurale.
