Lydia's husband John Baylis died in 1904 in the lunatic asylum. I have never seen photos of any of the family.
Thanks,

Kelly.

I do have some information on Lydia Langley who married John Baylis. Her daughter Cecilia married my great-uncle Ernest Finlay. The son who was born on the way to Australia was given the name Arundel because they came on the Arundel Castle.

I think the attached photo shows Lydia, and Cecilia with her husband and daughter, and my grandfather.

Patricia

Hello,

I have a Benjamin Baylis born 1813 (baptised 31 Dec 1813 at St. John the Baptist Bromsgrove to John and Ann), and I think he married Hannah Ryland (also born in Bromsgrove) in 1845 in Kings Norton. He was a grocer and lived in Edgbaston in 1851 and then the trail becomes a bit less clear - you also have Benj and Hannah and I have found a family of Benj & Hannah living in Birmingham in 1861(may be yours or mine?). I guess there were two separate families. I haven't gathered much info on other Baylis's outside of Bromsgrove. Do you know of any links to this area with your family?

Sorry I'm not much help!

Hi again,
I would like to get in contact with you Barbara Alexander or other descendants of the above people. My new email is cralley@iprimus.com.au
I have pieced together a bit more of the story which wasn;t clear to me at the time I was writing the reply above.
I now think that Ida Marguerite Haill Baylis, an English girl, the daughter of Alice Roadknight and Wm Haill Baylis, married Hamilton William Irwin, an Australian soldier, in England in 1918, at the end of the war. He was shipped back to Australia just after that, and I think she must have come out on a war brides ship shortly afterwards. I haven;t been able to find any records of her travelling over. Hamilton was training as a chemist until war broke out and when he returned he wanted to continue his training, but I don;t know for sure what happened after that. I think Ida and Hamilton lived at 17 Mitchell St Monto in Queensland, Australia, not England as I thought Barbara Alexander meant.
I don't know the children they had, obviously at least one as Barbara is their grandchild.
Ida's parents and siblings also emigrated to Australia in 1926, Alice and William Haill Baylis, sister Freda and son...arrggh can;t remember his name! Not sure where they all lived. Possibly NSW. If anyone has any further info i would love to hear from you.
THANKS
Rosie Alley

Baylis in Worcestershire

Looking for Baylis family from the Bromsgrove area. John Baylis a grocer and his wife Ann married c1810 (could be Ann Horton, more than a few John and Ann's in this era). Children were (John Horton? 1810); George 1811, Benjamin 1813, Anne and Sarah 1818, and Samuel 1823 (all baptised in Bromsgrove). I'm having trouble tracing their origins. I found John as a widower in the 1851 census as being born in Worcestershire but place unknown. Samuel, also known as John, moved to London.
There were a few other families in Bromsgrove around this time which may be linked.

Would love to hear from anyone with possible connections.

I'm replying to my own thread ... I have found John's birth in 1849 in Marylebone. His parents were Samuel and Elizabeth nee Morgan. It seems John's father interchanged his name between Samuel and John, no idea why! No wonder the confusion... Samuel (alias John) was born 1823 in Bromsgrove Worcester and his wife ELizabeth Morgan born 1819 in Chelsea, London. Samuel/John had 2 other children Ann (1853) and Lizzy (1857). Lizzy married Robert William Hickman Riches.

I'd still like to hear from anyone connected to these London Baylis's.

Platt Bayles (Baylis?) was b. L. I., 1733. He married Phebe Lewis. Platt was an officer in the Revolution. He died at Valley Forge, PA, 1778. Platt and Phebe lived in NJ. I don't know of a John Baylis who married a Phebe Lewis and was also in that war but I would be interested to know more about John. I have more info on Platt but do not know where he is buried. Many of his family were Presbyterians.

Baylis in London

Searching for my ancestor John Baylis born c1850, possibly in London, son of John Baylis, a coachman. He married Lydia Langley in Bethnal Green in 1875.
John could be part of a family in the 1851 and 1871 census who lived in Paddington and St. George Hanover Square. This John was born 1850 in Marylebone and a son of John (a coachman)and Elizabeth, and there was a sister Lizzy born 1858 who married Robert William Hickman Riches.

John Baylis (jnr) migrated to South Australia in 1876.

If anyone can link with this family I'd love to hear from you as I have made very little progress in the 15 odd years I have been doing this!

I dont know if I answered you. Arthur Charles Leitch Baylis was a registrar in the Court. So one would assume with this job he was able to witness these marriages. He was my g.g.grand uncle and I do have some information on him

The Name Baylis comes from the Title "Baliff" in the French Language. The Baliff in medieval times was the equal to today's Judge and Jury. He also was in line to be king if no royality were avalible.

I have heard that it original comes from Wales. However, Wales is in England and is not far from Scotland and Ireland. So wa can conclude it as United Kingdom name!! LOL.

Just found message about BAYLIS and interested that Ulverston is mentioned. This is first time I have seen Baylis connected with Cumberland apart from my own family. My ggf married Jane Baylis from Maryport CUM.in 1842 and her gf was Thomas Baylis who first appears when he married Mary Ritson 06/09/1770 at Crosscanonby. Jane's father was also Thomas and he married a Margaret Wright in 1805 also in Crosscanonby. Baylis does not appear in CUM before this date according to IGI. Any interest? Benjamin and Mary's daughter Mary married Virgil Armour, they then had a daughter Mary Elizabeth, who married Jay Curtis. They had two infant sons, not twins, born between 1877-1879. They both died the same day of an unknown disease. They were buried in the Balis plot in the Peterboro, NY village cemetery.

Well, that's a bother.
Have you found where the "bede" and "arundle" came from in his children's names as they are both rather unusual? Or was Arundle the captain's name - I have one of those! Have you been able to discount them from Lydia's family? And with the other BAYLIS having children at the same time - is he possibly related?
I found one of my ancestors place of birth via the headstone in the Walkerville cemetery - otherwise I would have had no way of knowing it.
If you would like to contact me off-list on miriams - at - optusnet.com.au feel free and maybe we can throw some ideas around.

May I suggest you purchase a birth certificate of a child born around 1870-71 and use the address to find them on the 1871 census. That should give you the father's place of birth. The marriage certificate of the couple will give you his father, so you can use those two items of information to find him on earlier census records.
