Thomas Spencer Baynes (1823-1887)

A biography of interest. I have no additional information.

Thomas Spencer Baynes (1823-1887) was a philosopher, son of a Baptist minister, born at Wellington, Somerset, intended to study for Baptist ministry, and was at a theological seminary at Bath with that view, but being strongly attracted to philosophical studies, left it and went to Edinburgh, when he became the favourite pupil of Sir William Hamilton, of whose philosophical system he continued an adherent. After working as editor of a newspaper in Edinburgh, and after an interval of rest rendered necessary by a breakdown in health, he resumed journalistic work in 1858 as assistant editor of the Daily News. In 1864 he was appointed Professor of Logic and English Literature at St Andrews University, in which capacity his mind was drawn to the study of Shakespeare, and he contributed to the Edinburgh Review and Fraser's Magazine valuable papers (chiefly relating to his vocabulary and the extent of his learning) afterwards collected as Shakespeare Studies. In 1873 he was appointed to superintend the ninth ed. of the Encyclopædia Britannica, in which, after 1880, he was assisted by William Robertson Smith.

See link for complete information.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Spencer_Baynes

The family emigrated to Australia around 1910. My father married Lilian Kneller GHRIMES in 1935.

I am Jack Neil OAKLEY, the second of their 6 children, born in Welllington, New Zealand in 1937.
Re: Bayne Family Documents

Update to my previous list of found documents re: Baynes

** Thomas Baynes - Marriage Certificate Follow-up to my previous message.. The document is a marriage certificate dated March 12, 1866 uniting Thomas Baynes and Lucy Wilkes. Thomas Baynes was 25 years old and a Furnace Man by trade and Lucy Wilkes was 20 years old. They both resided on Walsall Street, Parish of Darlaston, County of Stafford (assume England). Thomas' father is listed as Samuel Baynes, Furnace Man and Lucy's father is listed as Moses Wilkes, Bolt Forger. Emma Perks and Joseph Arnold were witnesses to the marriage. ( I also have a baptismal certificate for an Eleanor Perks dated 1829...See Perks family board). Anyone know if the Perks and Baynes or Wilkes are related?
Comment: looking over the documents, I noted that the spelling of Wilkes changed...the "e" was dropped in the USA documents to make the name "Wilks".
** Hannah Baynes -Death Certificate (date of death Dec. 15, 1886 at 73 Meeting St., Sub-District of Wednesbury, County of Stafford). She was 72 years old and the widow of Samuel Baynes, a Furnaceman by trade. It also states that her son, John Baynes, was present at her death. Cause of death was a "cerebral hemorrhage".
*** Ethel Baynes (my grandmother) - Birth Certificate -born April 8, 1889. Place of birth 2715 "C" Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PA). Parents listed at Moses and Elizabeth Baynes. Moses' occupation: Shipwright.

Good Luck Searching!

Hi i am picking up the links again with John Baynes, i have gone back to 1744 and am now stuck i need to get to Radwinter in Essex England, i found my grandfather David Baynes married to Margaret Mary Peel, his father was John Baynes Married to Annie Marie Hawley, his parents where Joshua Baynes Married (wife 1 Susan Taylor 1828 )wife 2 my marternal grandmother Lucy Webb 1828 after susan's death earlier that year ,Joshua's birth is a bit hard to find they may have put him down as John Born1804 i have his marrage cert and his death cert, his parents where John Baynes and Mary Hall she was from Gt Sampford, married 1793 ,his parents John Baynes and Jane Phillips this is as far as i have got from what i have been told by very distant cousins is that John was born in 1771 to John Baynes and Mary Possible Rutledge.all the above with the exception to the last generation ie (David Baynes he was born in Yorkshire born 1881 died 1943) the rest of the family line came from Radwinter & Wimbish in Essex. My line from my father Richard Vincent Baynes are all London born (east end)

if any of this makes sense to you and is any help let me know,
sincerly Margaret Stacey nee Baynes

Hi - I'm hoping that your e-mail address is still in use. Your Catherine Baynes Frederick is the sister of my great great grandmother, Mary Baines/Baynes (other spellings). I have a reasonable amount of info on this part of my family, because of a lot of work that my parents did, and even some work that my grandmother did, contacting my grandfather's cousins before she died in the late 1970's, at the age of 89. I have church records of many of Catherine and Ernest's children, from St.Augustine's parish in Jeffersonville, IN.

Please contact me if your address is still in use!

I look forward to hearing from someone on this side of my family, as the research never seemed to turn up living relatives for us, despite us knowing that Catherine and Ernest had a number of children.

Pam
Pam Jennings King
visit my genealogy homepage at: www.geocities.com/pamjenning/
Catherine Baynes Frederick is the sister of my great great grandmother, Mary Baines/Baynes (other spellings). They were from the Castlebar area, but my family has never been able to pinpoint it closer than that. What can you tell me about Daisy Hill? Anthony and Mary may very well have been siblings of my ancestor Martin Baynes, who was born between 1800-1804 in County Mayo.

I have a reasonable amount of info on this part of my family, because of a lot of work that my parents did, and even some work that my grandmother did, contacting my grandfather's cousins before she died in the late 1970's, at the age of 89.
