Family of William Beachum b. 1811 and Jane Burleson

I have concluded that John A. Beachum b. 1833 and his brother Hugh Lawson Beachum b. 1838, who both res. Itawamba Co. MS for most of their lives, are both sons of William Beachum b. 1811 and his first wife Jane Burleson. Although this seemed likely (but not proven) in 2007 when I posted some data about it on the Beauchamp board at http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.beauchamp/2.5.44.1.1.1.1..., I confess that I have unknowingly had reasonable proof of it for 20 years, in the form of a letter published in Itawamba Settlers v. XII, no. 3 (fall 1992), p. 132. This letter dated 22 Mar 1876 was sent from John A. Beachum's youngest son James Robert Beachum b. 1860 to his uncle James Monroe Beachum; in it, James Robert Beachum calls James Monroe Beachum uncle and himself nephew. This could only be true if James Robert's father John A. Beachum were the brother of James Monroe Beachum, son of William Beachum. The other points I brought up in my 2007 post add credence to this conclusion - as I stated then, a will or estate settlement data for William Beachum b. 1811, if either could be found, might also support this conclusion. It had long been assumed without specific proof that John A. and Hugh Lawson Beachum were the youngest sons of John Beachum b. 1789 and his wife Anna b. 1791 (whose eldest ch. was William Beachum b. 1811), but I believe this is not the case; instead, John A. and Hugh Lawson Beachum are grandsons of John and Anna Beachum.

This is the family structure I have adopted:

William M. Beachum b. 4 Mar 1811 KY (also seen TN or NC), d. 19 Mar 1879 Aurora, Wise Co. TX and bur. Aurora Cem. there, mar. first 15 Jan 1833 Hardeman Co. TN to Jane Burleson b. 1 Jan 1815, d. 20 Aug 1847, bur. Beachum (Mitchell) Cem., Itawamba Co. MS, dau. of Aaron Burleson and Rebecca (Rebecca's surname possibly Rutledge, not proven). Some cemetery transcriptions give Jane's death date as 29 Aug 1845. Their 5 children are as follows:
i. John A. (for Anderson?) Beachum b. 21 Oct 1833 TN (probably Hardeman Co.), d. 19 Aug 1862 Itawamba Co. MS, mar. 13 Dec 1855 Itawamba Co. MS to Isabella Roxanna Allen, 3 ch. William Joseph 1857, John Wister 1859, James Robert 1860
ii. Hugh Lawson b. 24 Sep 1838 MS, d. 27 Aug 1869, mar. 14 Apr 1861 Itawamba Co. MS to Nancy Ann Tabler, 1 ch. Lula Jane 1866
iii. James Monroe b. 25 Jun 1842 MS, d. 8 Jan 1912, mar. 15 May 1866 Itawamba Co. MS to Rhoda Shumpert, 7 ch.
iv. Rebecca Ann b. 11 Jun 1845 MS, d. 2 May 1942 Dorsey, Itawamba Co. MS, mar. 10 Jan 1866 Itawamba Co. MS to Anderson Duke Martin, 8 ch.
v. Mary Jane b. 11 Jun 1845 MS (twin), d. 3 Jun 1901 Dorsey, Itawamba Co. MS, mar. 28 Oct 1867 Lee Co. MS to George Martin, 5 ch.
William Beachum mar. secondly 12 Feb 1852 Itawamba Co. MS to Arabella Davis Galloway and had 4 ch. Frank Wiley, Alice M. (d. yng.), Leroy D., and Quitman (d. yng.); a 5th ch. Dudley is sometimes listed, but this might instead be the middle name of Leroy or Quitman.

As best I can figure it, Clyde William Beachum Sr. (1891-1978) was a son of Hugh Wilson Beachum (1870-1940) and Regina Belle Simmons....and therefore a first cousin of my grandmother's. Hugh Wilson (my grandmother called him Uncle Wils) was a son of Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910) and Mary Jane Taylor (1836-1882). I can go back several more generations. I'd love to compare notes with you all. I was just trying to trace down Uncle Wils' children and found these messages.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
Asheville, NC

I am trying to find out one way or the other if my Beechum's are related to this family. There are so many similarities... Beachum's marrying Schoolcrafts and then the name Ollie.
Here is what I am looking for:
My Gr Grandfather Wilson Beechum married Ollie M. Schoolcraft, they had a son George Wilson Beechum. Ollie in the cemetary records is listed as Ollie M. BEACHUM. We have always spelled it BEECHUM. I can't find my gr grandfather Wilson Beechum. I was wondering if these people might be on your family tree.
I know Ollie's dad is George Schoolcraft. I just haven't figured out if my George Schoolcraft is the son of Hezekiah Schoolcraft who is the brother of Almon Schoolcraft who is the father of Mary Polly Schoolcraft who married Topaz Beachum.
If you can help me in any way I would appreciate it!
Thanks

Re: Topaz Beryl Beachum

I am searching for my Beechum family. They intersect with the Schoolcraft family. I am only just finding out information about the Schoolcrafts but Mary Polly may be connected to my Schoolcrafts. If you have any info that may help me I would like to share with you. Here is what I have (I have not proven some of this)
My paternal great grandparents were Wilson Beechum and Ollie M. Schoolcraft (they had one son George Wilson Beechum my paternal grandfather). Ollie died when she was 29 and is listed in funeral home records in Massac Co. Illinois as Ollie BEACHUM. I can not find alot of info about Wilson Beachum. I found him in the 1910 census in Eldorado Illinois and can find no other info including whether Ollie and Wilson ever married.
Where Mary Polly comes into my Schoolcraft family: Ollie M. Schoolcraft's father is George Schoolcraft. George's father I believe is Hezekiah Schoolcraft whose brother Almon is the father to Mary Polly. I have not proven that my George Schoolcraft is the brother to Almon. Do you have any info that would help me prove or disprove this?
Also with the name Topaz Beachum connected to Mary Polly I was wondering if maybe Topaz is related to my Wilson in any way. I cannot find any other info about these three Beechums (Wilson, Ollie and George) after 1910. I found all three in the 1910 census in Illnois but they were not living together. Ollie and George were living with Ollie's parents in Massac Co.
Thanks
Re: Winnifred Beachum & John Lowry

I wonder if the Susannah Beacham you mention is the one that appears in the 1790 census of Anson County, NC. There are 4 Beachum households listed in that census: two headed by men named William Beachum, one headed by Jesse Beachum and one headed by Susannah Beachum.

I presume my 4th great grandfather, Alexander Beachum, was a son of one of these households. He first appears in Anson County records in 1796. He was married to Elizabeth Shelton, and a son of theirs stated that both of them were born in Virginia. Alex. and Elizabeth apear on an 1814 deed listing the heirs of Beverley Shelton, presumably her father.

Alex. and Elizabeth had three known sons: Hugh A. Beachum (1806-1861), Daniel S. Beachum (1810-1886) and Isaiah Beachum (1812-1894). Hugh and Isaiah married O'Neal sisters and remained in Anson County. Daniel moved to Tennessee, and later Alabama and Mississippi. One of my cousins suggested that Alexander may have gone to Tennessee as well. He seems to disappear from the Anson County, NC records....but then the court house burned and the records are far from complete.

I would love to compare notes and see if we could connect our Beachum and Beacham families.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
Asheville, NC
