I am a decscentant of William Dennis Beamer, my great grandfather. I'm just starting to research Mathias at depth, including the story (legend?) of his service in the Pinkerton Agency during the civil war. My uncle told me that Mathias immigrated to the US about 1845-55 from Switzerland.
Maybe this is the same as your history?
William Dennis Beamer was placed with relatives in Oil City, PA after the death of Mathias. He was one of 4 sons parceled out - no idea of what happened to Mathias' wife, I don't even have her name yet. They didn't treat Wm Denis very well, so he built a raft and floated down Oil Creek to the Monongehela River.

Please contact me if this sounds like what you have uncovered.
I really haven't done much with my Beamer line in the last several years. I'll have to go through some files later. I have based my connection to Philip Beamer of Frog Meadows and Red Land on the information from Philip's will as mentioned by your posting and various deeds and information from those lands.
Henry BEAMER d/ 26 Jan 1824 intestate, leaving widow Elizabeth (d/o Peter MOCK, dec'd)
and 7 children, all minors except John & Catharine
- Catharine (b/ 12 Apr 1799) w/o Jacob ShRINER
- John BEAMER (b/ 13 Jun 1802)
- Philip BEAMER (1809)
- Jacob BEAMER (1811)
- Samuel BEAMER (1812)
- Henry BEAMER (1813)
- Eli BEAMER (unknown)
After Henry's death, the guardian of Henry Beamer's children was John BEAMER (was this the children's brother???
The deed at the time of Magdalena’s death ties most of the children above Henry, Jacob, Phillip, Samuel, Eli.
(All those children so close together and she outlived Henry) :)
There has been much confusion on these names because of commonality of first names. I was quite excited when I found the will and deeds at the courthouse in Frederick Co. I just wish I could connect all the other Beamers some way.

Hi,

I believe this is my direct line(but not 100% sure). The Westmoreland Beamers were sons of John Beamer born in 1763 (wife, Maria Eva Bottenburg or Butenbarger) in Pipe Creek or Pine Creek, MD. Phillip, son of John, born in 1797 is in my direct line. Prior to John, everyone gets complicated with identical first names and commonly used second names. There is the distinct possibility that there are two Phillips of similar age. My Phillip definitely married a Bottenburg while the Phillip Beamer that owned the Red Land tract (then Frog Meadow?)had four children Mary Ocker, Henry Beamer, John Beamer, and Elizabeth Calf. My Phillip's children were Johm, henry, Adam and Catherine (I believe). I haven't had the ability (or time) to try to delve deeper.

Ken

I'll have to get out my research and pass the information on to you.

A couple of Philip Beamer's (brother to Samuel) son's were also in the Civil War.

Hi Ken,

I have had another inquiry from another person who is descended from the Westmoreland line. I will have to pull out my family research. I believe there has to be a connection but I am not sure where it is. Perhaps I can figure it out from my records.

Also, when I was doing some research in the PA Civil War archives, I found some Beamer's who fought for the Union from Blair County and other areas up that way. I didn't research them any further, because they weren't my direct line. However, they may be part of the Westmoreland line.

Let me pull out my research and see if I can figure out where the line may be connected. I believe it has to be.

Lori Beamer

I am descended from the Westmoreland County, PA branch (through Jacob Boehmer(or Philip) ,John Beamer b. 1763 + Maria Eva Butenbarger; son Philip b. MD 1797), but believe that all the Beamers in Frederick County, MD in mid- to late-1700s are related at some point.

Ken

I would be very interested to see how we are connected. There is some confusion in the line connecting it to the Brecknock Twp. Berks Co group. I believe my line came from Johan Phillippus Boehmer listed on the ship list of the "Neptune" in 1751 and he is listed along with at least one possible brother, Johan Wilhelm Boehmer. He was born in 1729 whereas the Philip, son of Johan Adam Beamer (Heinrich's son) was born in 1763. Research information has come from Philip's will, Henry's will and various land deeds in the Taneytown area. Jacob S. Beamer born 1811 married to Anna Maria Wentz is part of this family. He was a brother to my Samuel.

Looking for anyone who knows anything about these people. The 1910 census shows them in Latty, Ohio (Paulding Co.) with their two year old son Sam. They are hotel owners, The beamer Hotel (could be a boarding house) in Latty. Family lore says Mr. Beamer was a sometime-Reverend or circuit rider. Nothing other than that is known of Mr. Beamer.
Re: Beamer and Indian connection

A lot of this information is incorrect in part due to the poor genealogical work published by Ray Worth. To give him credit not as much was available to him and the demand for documentation was not generally insisted upon.

John D. Chisholm's parents are unknown. He states in his deposition given to Rufus King for the trial regarding the Blount Conspiracy that his father lived in Charleston, SC, but he provides no name for his father or states the family's origins beyond that he is a native of Scotland. Charleston records do not clearly identify his father, though it is possible that William Chisholm who has his sons John and Thomas co-sign a note in 1783 is his father as John is called "of Washington County, NC" (source: 41 Judgement Roll 125A, File 89A). The Chisholms of Charlotte County, Virginia are wholly unconnected, there is absolutely no documentation that connects them with John D. Chisholm

John D. Chisholm did not marry Betsy Fawling, again there is no proof whatsoever. Worth based his identification on a document where John Chisholm acted for the widow of Betsy Fawling and Worth assumed that John had married here. In fact, John at the time was a justice so that his action could be explained as an appointed guardian.

John D. Chisholm is documented as having a wife found as Pasty, Patty, Patience in the records. She is well documented in letters for the Indian Agency as she ran the Chisholm tavern, which catered to many of the chiefs and warriors coming through Knoxville and were paid by the government. She divorced John in 1799 and then married William Brent. Her passport to Louisiana is on record as Mrs. Brent. She died in Feliciana Parish, Louisiana and left a detailed estate records naming all of her children by John D. Chisholm and their place of residence. Three of John Chisholm's children were married in Nachez during Spanish occupation and their marriages are recoded in the records there. Two of these identify Patty's maiden name as "Massengill", which indicates she was part of that family. John's alliance with this family clearly would have helped him in his rapid rise in East Tennessee.

From Patty's estate papers in Feliciana (1819) we know that John D. Chisholm's children are; Elizabeth (1778-1818) wife of John Sommerville of Nashville; Ignatius who lived in the Cherokee Nation/Arkansas; Deborah (1786/7-1833) wife of William Massengill; Mary Ann "Polly' wife of Phineas Thomas of Fayette Co., TN; John R. who married Anna Egan and was of Feliciana; Titus Ogden married Harriet Penelope Trend in Feliciana; Joseph D. (died 1827) married Frances Christmas of Feliciana; Dennis M. We also know that a James Chisholm was another son, he turns up in a deed with Patty and is called her son. He is likely the man who allies himself with the Young Chiefs of Georgia. He must have died without issue by 1819 when his mother's estate was probated.

Patty Chisholm divorced John D. Chisholm in 1799, due to his adultery with a Cherokee woman. This was probably only part true. John like most Indian traders needed to establish kinship within the tribes in order to conduct business and most did this through marriage that allied themselves to important women in the tribe. There are accounts of at least two, probably more women. One woman is called sister of Dick Brown, son of a headman John Brown in Northern Alabama. The other woman is called Martha Holmes. Both women seem to be descendants of a female kin to Oconostota, who is generally identified as "Quantsis". Based on Cherokee customs, it would have been possible for a trader to have had relations with several women in one clan, though probably more of serial monogamy than actual polygamy. It is nearly impossible with materials that remain to speculate too much, but it does seem clear that John had at least one son Thomas Chisholm who became Chief of the Western Cherokees. Another son George also appears through various citizenship claims, thought to be the son of Neecooie, daughter of part Creek trader Jack Thompson by Wailia, daughter of Quatsis. George's daughter Lydia wife of Benjamin McCabe leaves several petitions which recall the family and lineage, but no independent evidence has been found to corroborate it.

There are many confusing claims to the Cherokee lines, because the records are geared either to later payments of descendants that did not have to prove in writing who their ancestors were and to the male centric records that exclude many of the women who were central to the Cherokees who were matralineal in tradition and so one's identity came from the mother not the father.

Hi

I am looking for information about the Beamer family of South Carolina. Especially William Beamer who gave an affidavit on March 23, 1849 stating the following:

"Personally appeared before me William Beemer (an Indian), who being sworn, saith that he was acquainted with Indian Mary on Edisto Island, and that the said Indian Mary had a daughter by William E. Edings by the name of Hannah, and that the said William E. Edings kept the said Hannah about as his child, and after his death, he left her to his widow Molsey Edings...William (by X his mark)Beemer. Sworn to 23 Mar. 1849, William Hill McCall, Magistrate [MR DDDDDD:301]
Also attached to the same affidavit:
Personally appeared before me John R. Dangerfield, who being duly sworn deposeth that John, Morton, Willam and James are the true and only issue of the body of the above named Hannah Edings, and that he (the said John R. Dangerfield) is the father of the said John, Morton, William and James. S/John R. (his X mark) Dangerfield. Sworn to 23 Mar. 1849, William Hill McCall, Magistrate. [MR DDDDDD:301]"

There is also additional information about the Beamers in the book entitled "South Carolina Indians, Indian Traders and Other Ethnic Connections" by Theresa M. Hicks and Wes Taukchiray. I am specifically trying to find out if the Indian Mary mentioned above is acutally related to William Beamer. I have noticed that he only gave affidavits for his own family members. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Moritz Boehme, son of CAF and Wilhelmenia Boehme came from Zwickwau Germany to the US. Two of his sons, Charles John born 7/21/1886 and Robert Henry, born 1/1890 took it upon themselves to add an "R" to the end of their name after leaving home. So they spelled it BOEHMER but sounds like Beamer. I have not idea as to whether there is a Jewish connection of any information on the line of Boehme in Germany prior to our direct family's immigration in the later 1800's to the US. Many surnames were adjusted after people immigrated to the US for a number of reasons...not only in spelling but how they were pronounced...this also occurred with first names as well...ie, Carl became Charles etc..

According to the marriage license of John N. Beamer in 1874, he was the son of Benjamin Beemer and Elizabeth Carrel and he was born in Frederick County, VA. John was probably born about 1812 in Frederick County, VA. Eventually he married Obedience Mitchell in Montgomery County, VA (I have a copy of the license for that one in 1835), and after she died in 1873 he Married Elizabeth Martin in Floyd County, VA.
To date have not been able to pin Benjamin Beamer/Beemer down as to where he came from and who his parents were.

I believe you and I are fourth cousins, once removed. Philip and Rhoda Beamer are my 3X grandparents. I have been studying my family’s history for over twenty years. It is amazing how little progress I have made on the Beamers before Philip Beamer.

My original source remains the best one. Because so many of the early Beamer family trees on Rootsweb contain the same factual errors and typos, I have to suspect many of these people got their trees from the same letter that was sent to my father in 1978 by a young farmer’s wife in Nebraska, researching her husband’s tree. She said she had sent out over 150 copies and was discouraged as only about 40 had replied.

“Richard Beamer, with his family, came to this section (between Fancy Gap and Hillsville, Va.) of Carroll County about the year of 1790 and settled at a place that has since been known as Beamer Knob (elev. 3,379’). He there procured land, erected a home, reared a family and spent the remainder of his life. When he came here, he left relatives on New River, in what is now Giles County.

The children of Richard Beamer were two sons and four daughters. One of the daughters married a man named Davis; they moved to Tennessee, another married a man named McCrawford, another married Howell H. Dean, and the other Harrison Dean. They all reared families in this region. Henry, a son, while a young man, moved to North Carolina where he reared a family and many of his descendants may be found in Surry County to this day. (Sept 12, 1932). Info gathered by a Judge Bolen in Hillsville, Va.

Philip, the other son, married Rhoda Lundy and remained on his father’s estate and had the following children: five sons & five daughters. Peter L. Beamer, Henry, and Isaac all spent their entire lives in the region. Noah (Menoah) moved to Missouri, Richard moved to California, Florence (Frances) married Newell Combs. Polly married Isaac Edwards, Rena married Elijah Edwards, “Tena” married Jonathan R. Sumner, they made their home and reared their family in Carroll County until several of the children were grown, they then moved to Missouri. Sarah Beamer married Isaac Branscomb, who made their home and reared their family in Grayson County, Virginia.”

I'd better make a few quick commnets on the above. The patriarch Richard's wife is often listed as Charity with no maiden name. Phillip and Rhoda's child Isaac is listed as William Isaac more often. Interestingly, he married his first cousin, Mahulda Harrold. Her mother was Rhoda's sister.

Elsewhere, I have Judge Bolen of Hillsville, Va. listed as having Beamer ancestors. His photo can be found on the website www.newrivernotes.com. It is an excellent site for learning how southwestern Virginia came to be settled. It includes many notes on many surnames. Surprisingly, Beamer has only one minor mention on the site. I do have three other surnames of my ancestors from the region listed at length.

One of those is Lundy. Rhoda Lundy’s tree is very easy to trace, as she was a Quaker, and the Quakers are meticulous record keepers. You will find several versions of her tree on this web site and also familysearch.org (my favorite). I have traced Rhoda’s Lundy ancestors all the way back to England in the early 1600s. Note some trees have a typo for Rhoda’s birthplace as Hardwick, Sussex County, VA. It is actually the same as her mother’s, Hardwick, Sussex County, NJ.

Her parents married in her mother’s home Quaker community and had their first few children there before moving across the river into Pennsylvania to her father’s home Quaker community where they lived for some more years before migrating with the extended Lundy family by the Great Wagon Road down to Deep River, a Quaker community in North Carolina, near the Virginia border. From there, they finally moved to a Quaker community in Grayson County, VA.

Rhoda married when she was 15 and was “dismissed from unity,” that is, stricken from the roles of the Quaker community for having married a gentile (non Quaker). Philip was 18 when he married. Though he was apparently the youngest of his parents’ children, he inherited the log cabin his father built and the 380 acre homestead. Rhoda appears in the 1850 census living in the household of Isaac Branscomb, the husband of her daughter, Sarah.

Be careful when dealing with the county names Montgomery, Grayson, and Carroll. They can all refer to the same place. As I understand it, when southwestern Virginia began to be settled, most of the region was Montgomery County. As the population grew and the 18th century came to a close, Montgomery County was split, the new part being Grayson County. Perhaps after 1830, Grayson County was split, the new part being Carroll County. The Beamer homestead was listed for a time in each of the three counties. Today, Hillsville is in Carroll County. A clearer explanation of this along with maps and dates can be found on the New River Notes website mentioned above.

Sorry to have gone on for so long. I hope you find something of interest in this.

Re: obit: Jason E. Beamer b.1893 d.1919-son of Eli & Elizabeth Beamer

Hi Lisa,

I do volunteer searching, so if I can help you in anyway with your Beamer line let me know. The Jason Beamer obit posted I don't believe is from your Mary Beamer's line.

Your Beamer family resided in Va. Your Ola Phillips maiden was Phillips. I found your Joshua & Mary Beamer in the 1910 Roanoke census, Ola Phillips age 11 niece, race black. She could be a niece to either one, Joshua or Mary.

Jason Beamer of this obit was a son of Eli & Elizabeth (Tidrick) Beamer. Jason Beamer and his siblings, Mace, Ola and Eline and their mother Elizabeth Beamer are residing with Elizabeth's father, John Tidrick as of the 1900 census Carroll Co. Ohio, Monroe Twp., race white.

Ola Phillips mentioned in Jason's obit as a sister, was Ola Beamer, her married name being Phillips. She was born Dec 1895 in Ohio. As of the 1910 census Carroll Co Ohio she is still residing in her grandfather John Tidrick's home as Ola Beamer.

I didn't look earlier than 1910 census for your Beamer family. I would start with trying to find Rose Beamer in the 1900 census, Rose is listed as Joshua's mother living with him in 1910, track Rose backwards thru the census. Check soundex and various spellings for her first name Rose/Rosie/Rosemary/etc. and married name Beamer/Beemer/etc.

You may email me direct at cramsey121@aol.com if you would like me to help do some searching.

Chris
