Newton S Beardsley McHenry Illinois Funeral Card died Nov.1883

Hi, I bought an antique lithograph and frame at a goodwill store, when I removed the wood back there was a funeral card inside with the lithograph, it says Newton S Beardsley Died November 25 1883 age 17 ,1 month, 15 days. The only Newton S Beardsley I could find that died in that year was from McHenry Illinois. If there are any family members interested in this funeral card, please contact me and let me know. royalfrush47@aol.com

According to research of others as well as some of my own research, Seth Warren Beardsley was a Reverand. He married Mary Egbert Devoe. They married in St. Paul's Church in NYC, service performed by Rev. Bishop Hobart. They had several children including a son, Seth Warren Beardsley Jr. Mary Devoe's father was Frederick Devoe Jr and her mother was Ann Arrinson. The Devoe family are from New Rochelle, New York. There is alot of genealogy available on the Devoe family from New Rochelle, New York. Seth Warren Beardsley performed the marriage of Mary's sister, Harriet Pendleton nee Devoe to Joseph P. Dillentash in Sackett's Harbor, New York.

Fred Beardsley [1853 Ill.] and wife, Ida May

Fred S. Beardsley b. 1853 Ill.
parents: George and Elizabeth [nee McGregor]
m. Ida May Shear in Luddington, MI. [per LDS marriage record]
Dec. 10, 1887
son: Fred S. "Frank" Beardsley Jr. b. October 16, 1888, Luddington, MI. [per LDS birth record]
In 1900 Ida and son are living with her daughter and son-in-law, Owen R. and Mary E. [nee Erwin] Davies in Allis, Presque Isle, Michigan. She is listed as being divorced.

Ida May Shear was married 1st. to James Erwin although I have not been able to find a marriage record and had seven children:
George [m. Maggie Shannon],
Mary [m. Owen R. Davies],
Harry,
Rosa,
Lottie [m. Isreal Roberts],
Fidelia [m. Thomas Roberts]
and Fred.

Harry, Rosa, and Fred all died as infants. She then had son Fred S. "Frank" Beardsley Jr. with Fred S. Beardsley. Her first husband died in 1905 in Presque Isle, MI., so I have to assume that she divorced James as well or they never were formally married since I have not been able to find a marriage record. Ida and James Erwin were living in the Oceana/Mason counties area in the 1870s/80s which fits with her marriage date to Fred S. Beardsley. I have not been able to find Ida May [Shear/Erwin] Beardsley and her son, Fred after the 1900 census.

Is this family familiar to anyone? I would like to know what happened to Ida May specifically. Thanks. -- Ronnie
Frederick Beardsley of Ilkeston, b1856

I am looking for more information about my GG Grandfather:

Frederick Beardsley, b1856 Babbington (Ilkeston) Derbyshire
Son of Frederic Beardsley & Charlotte Sisson, also of Ilkeston
Husband of Harriet Riley

He 'disappeared' from all records after 1881. There was a family rumour he had gone abroad... but it was a mystery.

I then found another Ancestry member with a handwritten Beardsley family tree. In this document Frederick is noted as being killed on Feb 11th 1898 in America. It also states that his younger brother Thomas (also married, probably to Sarah Ann Bostock) had been killed in America, ten years earlier on Feb 13th 1888.

Possibly they were in Allegheny, Pittsburgh, PA.

However as by 1891 Frederick's wife Harriet records herself as being a widow, I wonder if Fred's death date was recorded incorrectly.. perhaps should have been 1888. In which case both brothers would have died two days apart.

Why did they go to America, apparently leaving behind wives and children?
How can I find their death records? Or verify that this story is true?
Does anyone have any clues, or can shed any light on this family mystery?

Thank you.
Hello Donnie,

Nice to hear from you. Yes, my father was George Henry Beardsley, Charlies brother and your grandfather. I can remember Charlie very well and spent alot of times with him at about age 1 to 6 when we lived in Raleigh NC. He took me for rides in a Hudson Hornet sometimes and I can still remember the cops chasing us in their old 1950 fords, black and white with the big red light on the roof. Uncle Charlie was pretty wild in those days.
Unfortunately, my dad passed away this past February 16th at age 92, a week from 93, so there are none of the brothers still living. If you are interested in any family information, I may be able to help some. Actually Dad kept some records of all his family, but I haven't found the book that he kept yet, although I am sure it still is in his home with my stepmother, Bertha. Maybe someday it will show up. I live near Birmingham Alabama, and my email address is fbeardsley@bham.rr.com.

Regards,

Frank

Hello Frank,

I don't think we've ever met, your father George H. Beardsley is my great-uncle. His brother Charles H. Beardsley was my grandfather, James W. Beardsley (Jimmy)is my father. We stopped by Fort Walton Beach probably back around 2001 and visited George. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Donnie Beardsley

Kevin, May I ask if the David Beardsley you mentioned in your post had a son named Alvin? I am trying to find the parents of my ggggrandfather Alvin Beardsley married to Nancy Stoddard of New York. They lived in the Racine WI area for about 30 years and their son Hiram moved to Rice Lake WI and served in the Civil War. I have a article on Hiram from the Barron County Historical Society and it clearly states who his parents are, but I am having a hard time figuring out Alvin's parents. Others have suggested his father was David, but I have no information on that. Thanks.

I am attaching pictures of Sarah and Philo's graves along with one of Roswell's from N. Lansing Cemetery.

I do have info that Ichabod also had a son named Noah who died in Newfield, Tompkins Co., NY. I don't have confirmation or a cemetery for him though.

I live in NY, and have visited the cemetery personally, however it does take me some time to drive there. These stones are definetly in this cemetery as I have been there and saw them for myself.

Unfortunately, I don't give out personal info in this day and age, however if you'd like confirmation the people at Tompkins Co Gen Web are very helpful and can back up the info I have given you. Their site is not complete so these names are not listed yet.

I have been in touch with the director of Tompkins Co. Gen Web and she has the written records.
She visits the Tompkins county board here at rootsweb and answered my post on Roswell over there. Once I had confirmation that he was indeed buried there, I made the trip to the cemetery for myself.

Yes, I would also love to
have the photos of Sarah's and Philo's headstones.

It does appear I have been on the wrong track trying to find a Charles Beardsley as the husband of Lorania.
Now I have a different name - Evert Beardsley - to look for. I would really like to determine whether they
moved to Michigan, as my information says.

I wonder if you would mind giving me your name, and possibly a town and state where you live.
Thank you very much for the photo of Ichabod Beardsley's headstone. I am surprised to learn that Roswell and Ichabod were third cousins, as I thought the relationship would have been closer than that. But since they were both from Stratford, I guess they would have known each other from childhood, perhaps.

I am working now on the descendants of Ichabod and his wife Sarah Galpin. I am a g-g-grandson of their daughter Theodocia who married Nathan Olmstead Disbrow. I have been unable to find anything on Ichabod and Sarah's oldest daughter, Lorama (or Lorania), who married Charles Beardsley, a distant cousin, and lived in Michigan. (I wonder if this Charles was part of your Roswell's family??) I cannot locate them in any census records or other records. I live in Michigan and so have access to many records, but so far have had no luck.

Thanks again for the photo. By the way, Ichabod's second wife was Anna Strong Bacon, dau. of Benijah Strong and widow of Daniel Bacon of Lansing. Ichabod married a third time, but the third wife's name is unknown.

Michael S. Disbrow
Manton, Michigan

Alvin Beardsley was my 3rd great grandfather born in New York December 7, 1801, he married Nancy Conant (Stoddard, last name of her first husband) of New York and lived in the Racine WI area for over 30 years, his son Hiram A. Beardsley, my 2nd great grandfather moved to Rice Lake, WI and his daughter Nancy Louisa was my great grandmother. I cannot find any information on Alvin other than his birthdate, marriage and children. I know he died between 1860-1870 as he was on the 60 census but not the 70 but Nancy his wife was on the 70 listed as a widow. What I really want to know is who Alvin's parents were. I have no idea where in New York he was born, would love any help on his parents or his wife's parents if anyone has info, thanks.

He still holds that title even as of today.

Hoping someone might have info on where Roswell Beardsley and his wife are buried.

Here is the info I have:

Roswell Beardsley was the son of John Beardsley and Alice Booth Beardsley. He was born in Scipio, Cayuga County, NY on July 5, 1809. He married Isabella Conrad daughter of Peter and Bethia Conrad of North Lansing, Tompkins County, NY on Oct 29, 1829. He was appointed postmaster of North Lansing, Tompkins County, NY in 1828 by John Quincy Adams and served as postmaster there until his death on Nov 7, 1902.

His family is all buried in Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, Cayuga County, NY. Bethia Conrad is buried in North Lansing Cemetery in North Lansing, Tompkins County, NY.

Any help with their burial locations would be much appreciated.

Have done quite a bit of research on the Beardsley family Roswell is actually a gggguncle to me. Since posting this message, I have found his burial location in North Lansing Cemetery in N. Lansing NY.

During my research I did find Ichabod Beardsley, son of Amos, who is distantly related to Roswell. Their common ancestors are Samuel Beardsley and Abigail Clark. (Ichabod, Amos, Samuel, Daniel, Samuel).
Roswell' line goes (Roswell, John, Eliakim, Samuel, John, Samuel).

Ichabod was born 9 Feb 1767 in Stratford, CT. and died 27 Apr 1849 in Lansing, NY. He was married first to Sarah Galpin and second to Anna (I don't have a last name for her). All are buried in N. Lansing Cemetery in N. Lansing, NY. Along with Ichabod's son Philo who was killed by lightening at 14 years of age.

Here is a picture of Ichabod's grave...

I'm sorry I can't help you with the burial place of Roswell Beardsley, but I am interested in the man and how he was related to my ancestor, Ichabod Beardsley, who also lived in Lansing, Tompkins County.

Ichabod (b. 1767 Stratford, CT), son of Amos Beardsley, left a will in Tompkins Co. dated 25 Aug. 1848, proved 29 June 1849. Roswell Beardsley of Lansing ascribed his testimony to the will, professing acquaintance with Ichabod Beardsley. This proves that they knew one another, but does not prove relationship.

Would be interested in your take on this matter.
Correction: Peter was Isabella's brother. Her parents were Johan Jacob and Bethia Conrad.
