Query:
Joshua B. Bearss, b. 1775, Danbury, Ct of Marion, OH
Joshua B. Bearss was born June 18, 1775, in Danbury, Ct. His parents are not known. Before 1800, he married Ruth Knapp, presumably in Danbury, the daughter of John Knapp and Ruth Gregory. He moved first, before 1800, to Vermont, and then before 1810, to Marcellus, Onondaga County, and finally to Delaware County, and Marion County, OH, where he owned a lot of land. The town of Claridon was laid out on land he owned at one time. He had children in Vermont, NY, and Ohio, and at least two of his daughters married in Claridon. In 1824 he married second, Susannah Mann, widow of Mr. Wade. He died in 1839, in Marion County, OH, and his estate was inventoried there in the Court of Common Pleas, and is recorded, but I have not seen it.
His identity is a mystery to me, and I am hoping someone knows his parents. It seems likely that he is at least a grandson of Josiah Bearss and Rebecca Baldwin, being a late son of either Thomas, Benjamin, David, or Daniel, but this is conjecture. He could also be an early child of one of their descendants. His wife Ruth Knapp was second cousin to the brothers Peter and Ebenezer Knapp who married Martha and Lois Bearss, daughters of Josiah Bearss and Zerviah Newcomb. He always spelled his name Bearss, and migrated to Onondaga County with the Knapps.
I am hoping someone can furnish information that would solve his parentage.
As far as I know, his children:
By Ruth Knapp:
1. Prudence, b. 1810, m. Samuel Thurston, moved to Iowa
2. Laura, m. Israel Clark, Jr.
3. Permelia, m. Jeremiah Handley
By Susannnah Mann:
1. Julia Ann b. 1830, m. Joshua Pennel, Delaware County, OH
His census records are as follows:
In 1800, he is residing in Hubbardton, Vermont (Joshua B. Barse), where he has 1m 10-16, and a couple 26-45.
1810
Marcellus, Onondaga, NY, next to father in-law John Knapp. (Joshua B. Bearss) His family consists of a couple 26-45, 3 females under 10, and one female 10-16.
1820
Delaware County, OH, Big Rock Township (Joshua B. Bearss). His family consists of a couple 26 to 45, 1male under 10, 1 female under 10, 2f 10-16, 2f 16-26
1830
Marion, Claridon, OH(the county boundaries changed, he does not appear to have moved)
1m-5 1m5-10, 1m10-15, 2m 20-30, 1m 50-60
1f-5, 1f 5-10, 1f 10-15, 1f 15-20, 1f 30-40
I would be extremely grateful for any information regarding this man. johnqdoe@att.net or post it here.
