Hi Cousin Don,
The Bearss family that came to Ohio through New York from New Fairfield, Connecticut, was prior to that the Bearse family of Cape Cod. It was probably Joseph T. Bearss that changed the spelling from Bearse. This family comes from one progenitor who was Augustine BeArce who landed in Cape Cod in 1638. There are many spelling variations of the name that have come down the line since then, but they all come from the same guy. He was presumably married to "Mary Hyanno" AKA "Little Dove" Princess of the Wampanoags and granddaughter of the great Chief Sachem Highiyannough.

Please join us at both our sites for this family at Yahoo Groups and meet your cousins! There at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BEARCE/
and
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Bearce-Banter/
Re: BEARSS family in Ohio

My great grandmother was Clarissa Bearss, who married Henry Wonnell in 1859, probably at Ottawa City Ohio which is now Catawba Island near Port Clinton Ohio. They had 3 children - Edgar, Otis, and Henrietta Wonnell. Otis W. was my grandfather, John Wonnell my father (plant manager of Biro Mfg. Marblehead and chief designer there for many years - lived in Lakeside Ohio). Clarissa died in 1894.
Clarissa was the daughter of Gedeon Hubbell Bearss. Their family originated (as far as we can tell) in New Fairfield Conn., and we believe they came from Scotland originally but we're not sure. Joseph T. Bearss is the name associated with New Fairfield, a farmer from that area. His wife was Betsey Turner, daughter of Adam and Eurice Rockwell Turner, a searfaring family. In 1838 Joseph and his family including 8 children moved to Catawba Island Ohio, and had an extensive fruit farm there near the present Resurrection Lutheran Church. In 1860 they moved to Harris Twp. near Elmore Ohio. At some point Henry Wonnell moved to the Dwelle fruit farm in Portage Twp. near Port Clinton. I believe that is near Rt. 53 and 2.
Their eldest son was Gideon Hubbell Bearss, who left for New York State at 16 to become a cobbler. He married Betsy Turner, and their 3 children were born in Putnam County, NY.
In 1844 they moved to Catawba Island. Their large house near the end of Catawba Island was owned by L. J. Kennely as of about 1985.
My Dad, John Wonnell, said he was a second cousin of John Bearss, president of S. E. Johnson Construction in Toledo who I believe retired about 2002, but I'm not sure of the connection. Most of this is from my mother, Marie Brackney Wonnell, who passed away in 1992. She was Ottawa County historian for several years.

My Ancestry subscription is up Feb. 23. I hate to have you post your email address on here, but if you want to do that, I can give it to the woman I gave the stuff to and she can email you. Her name is Adele. As I recall, it was just a partial sheet of notebook paper--the kind used in classrooms 40 years or more ago for pencil work--with everything on it that I told you about. If they still have it, maybe they'll give it to you, I don't know.
Cletta

I should also explain that I bought the stuff at an auction between Imlay City and Capac, MI. So it was in the far eastern part of Lapeer Co., a mile or so from St. Clair Co. The Arndt's went to St. John's Lutheran church in Capac, I believe and then later went to St. Paul's Lutheran church in Imlay City.

I gave all the information from the Bible (I bought at an auction sale) to the Arndt family, so no, I don't have it anymore. I believe it's in Georgia or Texas now.

The Thumb region of MI is in the lower half of MI, the east side. If you look at MI, it looks like a mitten and the Thumb is the thumb. Jackson is a couple of hours away, in the middle of the wrist, so to speak. Calhoun county is just west of it, where Battle Creek is located.

Hart Bearss is her gggrandfather through Gusta Bearss who married Oliver Hart Elliott on 26 July 1893. Gusta died on 17 December 1930. What info are you seeking? We found many interesting articles. He lived in Wayne, Astabula County, Ohio from at least 1880 until his death there. He married Lydia. Can anyone tell me anything further about this Loren Bearrs.
Living next door to him in 1880 is Sarah Steele, age 40, and her mother Rosse McMichael. In 1876 Daniel Bearss, of Souix City Iowa married her, but in 1880 she has her own name back again. It is the association between Daniel Bearss and Loren Bearss that I am trying to establish. Thanks.
Nelson Bearss

Found a slip of paper with a raised seal on it, in a German Catholic Bible dated circa 1850's: "Nelson Bearss was born October 12the 1826 and was baptized July the 26 1857 being the sun of Johsia and Margorit Bearss." In each case, the 'a' in Bearss is written midway above the rest of the letters; perhaps a German pronunciation guide? This was found in the Thumb region of MI and several letters in the box were from Ontario. The surnames on the letters were Priel and Arndt. I would guess that since this was written on lined note paper and had the raised seal, it was an official copy of birth and baptism.
