Hi Sheelagh

I was born in York and now live on the Yorkshire Wolds; a twenty minute drive from the City centre.

I would love to see a copy of Bridget's marriage certificate. I'm not sure how you can get that to me. Like yourself, I'm not sure how this message board works.

Would I be able to look at your family tree on Ancestry?

Kind regards

Tim
Hi Tim
I am originally from York and already have all the info on Bridget - that's how I know she is the sister of your Margaret. As I mentioned I have Margaret's marriage certificate if you'd like a copy. And no you can't assume the Beastys were from Cloonlee! It is very likely but there was also a Thomas Beasty at Carrowkeel East although I am told he probably isn't ours. When I eventually get to Dublin maybe next year I intend to look in the cancelled valuation books to see if I can pin him down. Anyway nice to hear from another of his descendants
all the best
Sheelagh

Hi Sheelagh and Tom

My Gran didn't give me any more information so Im rather relying on MAyo connections to fill in the picture for me.

Other than loose references relating to the KIngs of Ireland and the circus connection, my GRan didn't leave me with any other idea of the origin of the O'Donnells.

We know (from the York census reports) that Martin claimed Knock as his birthplace. The 1861 census shows Martin Beasty , his sister Margaret (married to John O'Donnell) and Martin and Margaret's mother, Bridget Beasty (widow).

Do you think we can assume (from your research) that Thomas from Clonlee was Bridget's husband therefore Margaret/Martin and your Bridget's father?

I'll search for your Bridget in York - can you give me any other information on her i.e., date of birth.

Thanks.

TIm

Hi Tom I'm not familiar with this messageboard lark - did I press the wrong button and my reply went to you instead of Tim?
As to the Thomas Beasty townland, I am aware of the one at Addergoole but Ger Delaney at the South Mayo genealogy place tells me it's likely that mine is the one at Cloonlee mentioned in the Tithe applotment books. I just wondered whether Tim had any more definite info handed down by his grandmother.
Not sure what you mean about the map. I just used parish registers, civil certificates, censuses, and Griffiths etc to catalogue all the individual Beasty branches into little family trees to see what happened to them all. These are all handwritten so you can;t access them, but if you want a certain bit of info I'll be happy to look it up
regards
Sheelagh

hi Tim
just doing an occasional sweep for Beasty and noticed your posting. Your Margaret O'Donnell (nee Beasty) is the sister of my Bridget who also settled in York. Even after making a family tree chart for every Beasty around Knock I haven't been able to pin down which Thomas Beasty was their father. Don't suppose you know their townland?
regards
Sheelagh

My Grandmother (Rose O'Donnell)always told me that we were related to the Kings of Ireland; looks like this could be true!!

She also mentioned a circus connection. Does this ring any bells with you?

We will await further revelations once you have sorted out your shoe box and perhaps I'll be able to re-claim the loss crown then!

Can't wait for the next installment.

God bless.

Tim

Hi,

I haven't forgotton you but as I sifted through the information I have I realise how 'scrappy' it is and I will try and do a bit more research to string it all together and make some sense of it before I forward it to you. Meantime you are correct that the Beisty's or Beasty's came from this part of the world ... Beasty or “O’Biasta” was mentioned in ‘the Annals of the four masters’ by Mac Firbis as being descended from Echean King of Connaught at the time when St Patrick set out from Ballintubber to climb the ‘Reek’. I wanted to establish a link with our immediate clan of ‘Develeash Beisty’s’ who are now scattered throughout the world with this ancient nobility and it is a difficult task but I am getting there.
The first reliable record I found was my great grandfather’s listing in the ‘Griffiths valuation’ of 1844 . Patrick Beasty appears on the register for our village of Develeash. His sister could be the Beisty in your family tree..He was married to an Ellen McNeil and his son Patrick, my grandfather, was the 15th entry on the official birth register when records began for Co Mayo in January 1864 there were other children and passenger records for those who went to the USA but we’ll get to them later. I have a shoebox of stuff I will try and sort in the next few weeks - keep in touch and keep prompting me , Wishing you and all in your care a happy Easter..best regards Tom Beisty

I am trying to trace the Mayo roots of the Beisty/Beasty/Behesty (various spellings shown on the York census reports) family and the O'Donnell family that migrated to York from Knock, Co. Mayo around 1850. Margaret (born about 1837) and Martin (born about 1837)travelled with their mother Bridget Beisty (born about 1801,maiden name unknown) and Margaret's husband John O'Donnell (born about 1831)

Can anyone throw any light on the O'Donnell or Beisty family that would have lived in or near Knock?

Thomas Beastey - 1809

My 3rd great grandfather was Thomas Beastey born abt 1809 Marsden, Yorkshire, England. In 1851 he is enumerated as a widower age 45 occupation Stripper in a Cotton Mill with his son William age 8 living in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. There is a birth registration of a William Basty in Jan-Feb-Mar 1843 in Ashton-under-Lyne & from the IGI Records I have found a baptism record of a William "Basty" son of Thomas & Ann born 21 Jan 1843 baptised 2 Mar 1843 Saint Michael, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire. There is a death record (CheshireBMD) of Thomas Beasty in Ashton Town 1859 age 50. In 1861 his son William age 18 is enumerated at 25 Portland Street, Ashton with James Lownds & his wife Elizabeth he is listed as "cousin". As yet I have been unable to establish a connection between the names Beasty & Lownds. If anyone has any information it would be appreciated.

Hello,

I am also researching the family name Beasty. My g/grandfather, John Waldron was the child of James and Ellen Beasty Waldron. I have a copy of John's birth certificate stating the date was October 12th 1861. His sponsers were John and Rose Waldron. Beasty is such an unusual name and I am having a devil of a time finding any threads at all. If anyone has any additional information, I would greatly appreciate it.
Hello, I hope this message isn't so old that no one is checking for replies any more.
My grandfather came to the United States from County Mayo sometime before 1928. His name was Michael Joseph Biesty (not really sure of the correct spelling, since he changed it to Beatty). He was born 9-10-1901. His parents were Margaret Glynn and Austin Biesty. His siblings were Austin, Patrick, John, Eugene, Monica, Francis, Theresa.
Is this family any connection?
Thanks for any info,
Veronica
