CENTURY OF LIFE FOR MRS. BEATTY
Centennary of Keosauqua Woman Observed Sunday, March 22
In Mrs. Margaret Forbes Beatty, Keosauqua boasts a centenarian among her
citizens. This good pioneer mother was 100 years old Sunday, March 22, and
her relatives and a large number of friends delighted to do her honor on
this occasion. For many years Mrs. Beatty has been totally blind, but she
has been tenderly cared for by her daughters and son and while her physical
condition is such that she is confined to her bed all the time, her mind is
fairly good. She enjoys life and is able to converse with the members of
her family and friends. She has been a resident of this community for the
past 81 years and is loved and revered by all who know her. She and the
members of her family were prominently identified with the early life of
the community.
Margaret Forbes was born in Greencastle, Franklin county, Penn., on
March 22, 1825, the daughter of John and Mary Forbes. The same year she
was born her parents moved to New Hagerstown, Carrol county, Ohio. On the
way there her father became ill and died shortly after they settled in
Ohio. The family resided there until 1843, when they started to Iowa.
Upon their arrival in Van Buren county they located on what is now known as
the McSurley farm, near Mr. Zion, the place being then owned by Mrs. Beatty's
half brother, Robert Forbes, who was the father of the late Robert Forbes,
known to most recent dwellers in Keosauqua. Mrs. Beatty, her widowed
mother and one brother were members of a party of seventeen who came to
Iowa together and she is the only surviving member of the party.
The family later lived at Philadelphia, now Kilbourne, and it was there
that the then Miss Forbes and Benjamin Beatty were married October 10, 1850.
That fall the bride and groom settled on a farm located on the river below
Keosauqua, near the town of Rochester, then quite a village, but long ago
almost forgotten except by the older inhabitants. There they reared their
family. Seven children were born to them, two, John, Mattie, being deceased.
The surviving children are William, who lives on a farm below Keosauqua,
in the neighborhood where he was born; Misses Margaret, Ella, and Emma;
Mrs. Mary Rigsby.
There are also seven grandchildren, as follows: Messrs. Fred, Clark and
Marion Rigsby; Miss Zada Rigsby, Miss Ida Beatty, and Messrs. Linn and Roy
Beatty.
Other relatives of Mrs. Beatty are Francis Johnston of Keosauqua, who is
a nephew; and the following great nephews and nieces; J. H. Stull,
Mrs. Minta Gould and Mrs Amos Watts, all living near Birmingham;
Mrs. Mattie Armstrong of Mt. Sterling, Messrs. James, Jeffrey and A. R. Beggs
of Keosauqua; Messrs. John and Will Stull, Mrs. Sadie Stewart and
Mrs. Sadie Creath, all living near County Line, Jefferson county, and
James A. Ager of Kibby, Oklahoma.
One of the secrets of Mrs. Beatty's long life lies in her sunny disposition
and her willingness at all times to take life as it came to her, without
the fretfulness that is common to a dissatisfied humanity. It is 34 years
since her sight began to fail and in all that time she has been cheerful in
the face of affliction. She has a good appetite and sleeps as peacefully
as a child.
One of the greatest pleasures of this aged woman is to have some member
of her family get a hymnal and sit by her bed and sing hymns she loves.
And lying there she hums the tunes herself.
Although blind, Mrs. Beatty had always been quite active until an injury
caused by a fall befell her about two years ago, since which time she has
been confined to her bed.
On the occasion of her birthday she was generously remembered with
flowers and other gifts. Many friends called at the home as did all the
relatives living hereabouts. She has been and yet is when her age is
considered, a remarkable woman. When one ponders the fact that she was
born the year John Quincy Adams became president of the United States some
idea is gained of the very early date from which her life-span runs.
Keosauqua Barometer, March 26, 1925
-----------------------------------
ANOTHER OCTOGENARIAN
Van Buren county proudly boasts of two pioneer women who have reached the
100th mile stone in life's journey. One of these is Mrs. Mary A. Reneker,
who celebrated her 100th birthday, October, 1924, and is still living.
The other is Mrs. Margaret Forbes Beatty of Keosauqua, who became an
octogenarian on Sunday, March 22, 1925. In spite of the fact that she has
been blind for 3 1/4 years and unable to walk for over a year, on account
of a fall, she enjoys good health for one of her years and puts in much of
her time singing.
Sunday was spent at her home which was an open house all day, her
children, other relatives and neighbors being present and Grandma was the
recipient of many gifts of love and respect.
She was born at Greencastle, Penn., March 22, 1825; moved with her
parents to Ohio in 1825; came to Van Buren county, Iowa, in 1843, settling
on what is known as the McSureley farm near Mt. Zion; was married in 1850
to Benjamin Beatty, who died in 1866 on the old Beatty homestead, the town
plat being Rochester, north of Keosauqua; then to Keosauqua about 28 years
ago.
She was the mother of 7 children, the living being Mrs. Mary Rigsby,
city, Wm. Beatty north of town and the Misses Margaret, Ella and Emma, at
home.

OUR CENTENARIAN GONE
Only two weeks ago last Sunday, March 22, Mrs. Margaret Beatty, a highly
respected pioneer mother of this place, celebrated her 100th birthday and
our people were shocked to learn that she quietly passed away at 9 o'clock
Tuesday morning, April 7. Funeral services in charge of Rev. Apfel, were
held at the Keosauqua M.E. church today, Wednesday, at 2:30 p.m. We shall
have an obituary next week.

Notes:
John Beatty, who was the son of Benjamine and Margaret Beatty, and the twin
brother of William Beatty, was born near Keosauqua, Iowa, July 22, 1853,
and died at the County Home, Sept. 23, 1910. His mother, brother and four
sisters survive him. When he was 11 years old his father died; and, with
his brother, he manfully labored on the farm, and soon successfully
undertook control of the business affairs of the family, to the great
comfort of the mother and sisters. At the age of 18 he was converted,
uniting with the M.E. church at Mt. Zion and became a consistant christian,
testifying by word and deed to the power of Jesus to save. But when 27
years of age he suffered an attack of brain fever, which resulted in the
permanent derangement of his mind, and in this sad way the promising
career of this useful, lovable, earnest christian young man was cut short,
actual death would have done; indeed when at last death came it was
accepted by his aged mother, brother and sisters as a relief, both to him
and to them, from conditions which had been a sorrow for so many years.
The memory of John's character and deportment before he became
unaccountable remains and will ever be a great solace to them.
Appropriate funeral services were held at the County Home and interment
took place in the Forbes cemetery.

Notes:
Grandad was a rural mail carrier who drove a jeep! He was tall, 6'6", and
very strong. His favorite adult hobby was photography. He was a lifelong
member of the Methodist Church.
Linn taught school at Russell and Pleasant Plain (north of Selma) before his
marriage and afterwards until Harlynn was born. By the time Shirley was
born, he was farming. Harlynn Edmun was named after his uncle Allen
Edmund, but uncle Allen never acknowledged the letter announcing that, so
Harlynn was told that his name was Harlynn Mechem .. until he was preparing
to enter the army .. when his dad told him that his name was really Harlynn
Edmun !! Uncle Allen Mechem had a job in Washington, D.C. for Linn.
He had invented a car and Linn would have a good job as it went into
production. When Eleanor was three, the family traveled to Washington for
two weeks, but when they arrived there was no job. What's worse, Nellie
didn't care much for Allen's wife, Jennie. The family came home.
Harlynn's diaper provided one of the memorable incidents of that trip.
Nellie was washing it in a stream when it got away and floated downstream.
After the trip to Washington, D.C., the family lived in New London, Iowa
for a month or two. Linn worked for the railroad as a mechanic in the
roundhouse in Burlington for a year or two while living in Mt. Pleasant on
Harrison. They then moved to Mt. Zion where Linn bought and ran his own
garage and blacksmith shop across the street from the Mt. Zion store.
He ran a forge and fixed whatever was brought in. The girls tended the
shop whenever Linn was out on a call. They were strictly instructed to
close up the shop if the Gypsies came. Gypsies were a plague at that time.
They would arrive in carloads and steal you blind. A couple would distract
and divert your attention while the rest of them took anything not nailed
down.
Shirley started school in Mt. Zion. Around 1930 or 31, Linn was appointed
the rural mail carrier out of Mt. Zion. When that office closed, he
transferred to Keosauqua. The family moved to Keosauqua late in 1936.
All the family possessions were lost in a house fire in October of 1936.
The family suspected that Harlynn ?? had left a fire burning which caused
the fire, but that was never mentioned to him. (Eleanor, is this right?)
He enjoyed travel and took the family on several memorable trips, one
to Salt Lake City. During the trip to Yellowstone a bear got into the
model T and ripped up everything trying to get the bacon. They had to back
up one mountain that was too steep to drive up forwards.
----------------------------
There were hard feelings between Linn and Roy after their parents deaths.
Linn built a house on the family property (Eleanor guesses about 1915.)
When the war broke out, Linn moved from the house so that Roy could occupy
it and stay out of the war (being exempt as the head of house.)
After the death of their father, Linn and Roy could not agree upon a
division of the family property, so it was sold. The court record states,
"That the owners of the above described real estate are unable to mutually
agree upon a division thereof." It appraised for $8,800 and was sold to
Roy for $11,000. Linn received 4,802.62 as his 1/2 after fees, etc were
subtracted.
---------------------------------
Nellie was born in a sod house near Hill City, Kansas. Ken has a picture.
----------------------------
All those Overturff women wore a really tight corset. Eleanor and Shirley
remember their mother wearing a corset forever, even when she was thin.

Notes:
Dad was an enthusiastic athlete, amateur photographer and professional
engineer. He won local golf tournaments using only three clubs, played
basketball into his fortys and was a very fast runner in his youth.
He was a Communications Chief Sargeant in the Army during WW II (ETO),
graduated BSEE from Iowa State in 1949 and worked as a electrical engineer
and later as a corrosion control engineer until retirement. He was a firm
disciplinarian and taught his children respect for others.
Once he left Keosauqua, he certainly got around. The army sent him to boot
camp in ??, to electricians school in Connecticut and into the war in
Europe. The GI bill helped him through school in Ames. We lived in three
different houses in Ames and three more in Kewanee, Illinois. After that
he lived in Belleville, Trenton and Belleville again for the remainder of
his life.
