Shirley Frederick Beatty and his father Robert - Ireland and India

I’ve been researching my family tree on my father’s side but have come to a dead end and am wondering whether anyone out there might be able to help me.

Unfortunately it’s one of those situations where my father, who is still alive, never apparently discussed his father’s relations with him whilst he was alive and now it’s too late!

We only have two items of evidence naming my great grandfather. The first is the baptism certificate of my grandfather, Shirley Frederick Beatty, as recorded at the India Office, Westminster in 1924. This certificate states that my grandfather was born on 18th March 1890 and was baptised on 1st May 1890 in Saharanpur, North India. His father is given as Robert, his mother as Sophie and their abode given as Tirhoot. Robert’s occupation is stated as House Agent. The second item is my grandather’s marriage certificate (30/08/1919) and this stated his father Robert was deceased and his occupation had been a Tea Planter.

The only thing my father says he was told by his father was that Robert came from Ireland and emigrated to India as a young man. We don’t know if Robert met and married Sophie before or after leaving Ireland. He also believes my grandfather had no brothers or sisters but possibly did have a cousin, which would mean that either Robert or Sophie had siblings. I would certainly be surprised if Robert didn’t have any brother or sisters remaining in Ireland!

If my grandfather was an only child born in 1890, I suspect Robert was probably born around 1860-1870.

I am wondering whether in all of your researches into the Beatty lineage in Ireland any of you have come across a Robert that was born around this time, took a wife called Sophie and who emigrated to India. I’m not sure whether this was a common event or not but it has been suggested to me that they possibly emigrated because it was a “mixed” marriage of catholic and protestant families and would have been frowned upon in those days.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find even tentative links for Robert Beatty back to Ireland and a lot of Irish records were destroyed I really hope one of you can help in some way.

Thanking you in anticipation

Regards

Martin Beatty
Thanks to a very nice lady who couldn’t bear to see a rare piece of photographic history without a home, I now have in my possession an original photograph of the family of George William and Ida MASON BEATTY. The photo was likely taken around 1910 at the family home near the area where Ohio, Hancock, and Breckinridge Counties meet. In addition to George and Ida, the photo includes children John Herbert, who was reportedly killed in China in 1914, William Merrell, Viola and Roland, who married Hallie KEOWN. The photo belonged to a young schoolteacher who boarded with the family and became good friends with daughter Viola. A niece of the owner passed the photo on to me. If anyone descended from this family could provide more information about the family, or would like to have the original photo, please contact me directly. Thanks again Dorothy!
Hi. :-) This is quite a few years late, but you're still active on the site, and I hope that the information I have will help others.

Marshall Beatty might have also spelled his name Beaty; family oral history has it that the change to Beatty happened with Herod, or his son James.

James Byrd Beatty (b.1882 d.?) was apparently Perry's younger brother. He married Ora Poole, and they went on to have my grandfather, Sterling (b. 1921, Indiana). James was killed in some kind of farming accident, and Ora died shortly after; Sterling was raised by Lois after that, and his family eventually settled in Tennessee. There are still quite a mess of us around, on that branch. :-)

Unfortunately, I don't have anything useful about Marshall, but I wanted to toss out the filler information I have, and to thank you for clearing up a bit of confusion in the information I had!
-K

She was also age 22. Other possible connection would have been to Mary Amelia Beatty born about 1848..place unkown. died about 1827 burial Lake City cemetery, Spring Creek Twp., Elk County PA. Husband's name is probably John Murdick Kennedy also burial at Lake City cemetery.

If possible would like to find out a possible connection between the above-noted Beattys.

Mary Amelia Hartman Kennedy married E.B. Harmon after John Murdick's death on April 16, 1912. He was 66 yrs old and the son of John and Elizabeth Harmon and Mary was age 63. After Mr. Harmon's death Mary married Noah Beatty on June 2, 1921. Noah was the son of Samuel and Mary Beatty.

Mary Amelia's death record says she was born July 5, 1848 and died April 12, 1937 at the age of 88. She is buried in Lake City Cemetery under Mary A. Beatty 1848 - 1937 but the name of her apparent husband, John Murdick Kennedy,
is separate on the list. Wonder why her name is not listed as Mary A. Kennedy. In Marriage records Elk County list marriage of Minnie Beatty, age 22 then of Straights, Jones Twp. Elk County on 1/27/1888 to L.E. Jones, age 22 also of Straights. She would have been born about 1866. Mary A. Beatty would have been about age 18 in 1866. Wonder how they might have been related. You just let me know how much I owe you and I'll send it promptly.

I think I just found Samuel on Coleraine Road in 1910 in Ballymoney. There is also a John M'Kinley who is a Draper, on Main Street and a J. M'Kinlay who is a grocer in Balnamore. The Samuel should be Hannah's dad as her passenger list records say she was from Ballymoney, and she came over around 1912. He was the only Beattie that I saw, but was just now browsing.

Janeen

Janeen

Peter: Thanks so much for the reply. I am in New Jersey in the United States. Really having a problem finding this particular Samuel Beattie (Beatty) and Mary McKinlay. Hannah passed on when her kids were young. Her husband died many years later, but he was unable to keep the children when she died. Hannah's children that are still living are quite elderly now, so I am unable to query them for anymore information than what I already have gotten from them.

I do have copies of postcards, all from Dunloy, sent to Hannah from her family. I know one of Hannah's brothers was in Philadelphia when she came over. And Hannah's daughter Catherine told me that another had gone to Canada.

Anything you can offer in the way of clues as to this family would be greatly appreciated.

Janeen

Hi Barbara,

Dr. John Beaty was the first physician of Dublin, Wayne County, Indiana. He moved with his family in 1831-32 from Virginia. The account of this move (by him) is below with thanks to Barbara J. Scott who researched this and shared with me. She is related through the Jean Scott side (wife of Aaron Scott that I mentioned).

I AM VERY INTERESTED in getting more information on this family as I have siblings of Dr. John Beaty (children of Aaron and Jean Scott Beaty) as:

1) William S. Beaty m. Rhoda Crawford on 10 Nov 1832 in Wayne County, Indiana

2) Dr. John Beaty m. 1) Martha Paxton 2 Mar 1830 Rockbridge, Virginia and 2) Clarena S. Schoolfield 2 Dec 1834, Wayne County, Indiana (my line)

3) Nancy Beaty 1809, VA-1842, IN m. Harvey Bellon 10 Sep 1828 in Augusta County, Virginia

4) Eleanor Beaty 1809 VA - 1855 m. James P Bradsaw on 6 Jan 1834 in Wayne County, Indiana.

So a connection with your family and this line that I mention is not clear at least :-)

Beaty Family Move to Indiana
MR. JOHN MCCLURE, Greenville, Va.
DUBLIN, WAYNE COUNTY, IND. Janr. 7th, 1832.
DEAR FRIEND.
At my father's request I write you a few lines. We all landed in Ind. the 19th Oct. The old man had to stop in Richmond, about four miles in the State, partly on account of bad health and partly on account of bad roads and shackling teem. His bay filly failed before we got to Lewisburg and he swoped her off; we then got along tolerably till we came into the Ohio where the roads became bad. His old bay mare gave out & he had to buy one, otherwise we got along well. The rest of us went about 40 miles further and stopt in Henry County, the roads being so excessive bad that we thought imprudent to venture. Byers and myself then set out on horseback to visit the Warbash Country & went thro Marion, Boon, Mongomery & Clinton, & returned not satisfyed. We met with your brother. He removed from Tennessee and is keeping public house in Frankford, in Clinton County. We breakfasted with him. His family is well. I have settled about 18 miles west of Richmond in a small village and have purchased some property. The old man has purchased land within a mile & half of this place; has sold his waggon & two horses; the waggon for $100, the old bay mare that he got of Rowan for $50, the little pony for $40. He is now lying verry low and not much hopes of his recovery. He was verry much exhausted with fatigue when he stoped, but had recruited verry much untill the cold weather set in about the last of Nov. when he was taken suddenly ill with a relapse of his old complaint. Dr. Hindmad, of Richmond, is his physician, but does not entertain much hopes of his recovery. I was to see him a few days since; he was a little better, but has no hope, or but verry little, of ever being better. He requested me to write to you and let you known his situation. He wishes you to fetch your deed out with you, and also Alexander's and Thornton's and let William sign them all here, as he thinks it somewhat doubtfull whether Wm. can go in shortly if he should be called off * * * * Grain of all descriptions here is scarce and verry high, and of course, somewhat hard on emigrants. I believe I am thro. Give my respects to all my old neighbors. Tell Jas. Rowan that I will write to him shortly. My respects to your good lady and all the family.
While I remain your affectionate friend,
JOHN BEATY.
Source: James Alexander McClure, "The McClure family"; Petersburg, Va.: Presses of Frank A. Owen, 1914

with Thanks to Barbara J. Scott.

Kirk Beaty

Barbara, very curious about this one. In my line, Aaron Beaty (I do note the spelling difference, but sometimes this was an arbitrary change) married Jean Scott. They had beyond others, my third great-grandfather, Dr. John Beaty. Some coincidences at least.

Kirk Beaty

Re: Samuel M. Beatty, Fairfield Twp. PA

Samuel M Beatty is listed in the 1870 census. He was 35 years old. Mary Beatty was 32 (no maiden name) There was a Cload/Cladd? age 14; Charles A Beatty (11) Anna Beatty (9) Herman Beatty (4) Jennie Beatty (2) and Artie Beatty 3 months. Artie Beatty's information fits Arther/Arthur information in the 1900 census where his wife is listed as Marry/Mary, a son Charles Edward (my Grandfather), Annu(Anne) Beatty, and Charles A Beatty, a brother. The writing in the census is a bit hard to read and sometimes it is just wrong, so I have changed the spelling if I know for sure what they are.

My 4th G Grandfather, Walter Beatty, served in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in Captain Robert Adams' Co. , Col. Irvine's 6th PA Regiment. We don't know what his father's first name was. His mother's first name was Jean but we don't know her maiden name. Walter had two brothers, one was named, John, born in 1755. According to the information I have, John died July 17, 1829, in Beaver County, Pennsylvania.

Most of Walter's Revolutionary War records say "Beaty or Beatty" in the name field. You throw a few "creative" Census Takers in the mix and the possibilities become endless. Batey is another form that I have seen often.

I had an awful time finding the 1850 Census record for Walter's son, David. The Census taker had written "Batey" and the transcriber had indexed the name as "Baley". That was fun!

One of Walter's sons was named Aaron Watson Beatty and lived in the French Lick area of Indiana. Information I have indicates he is a farmer, not a doctor.

Barbara

Makes you wonder if they ever met.

I loved reading the letter - what a treasure!

My husband, two of our grandsons, and of course yours truly, went to a place just a little past Nashville, Tennessee last summer. We left from Mathews, which is about 70 miles east of Richmond, Virginia. We made it in 12 hours. Air conditioning, laptop, DVD movies, DS and Playstation. What a difference!

Hi Susan,
I can't find any likely match but there were a number of Beatty families in Fermanagh. My Beatty line did settle in Licking Co., next to Knox, but I know all of their marriages and descendants. Keep combing Co. Fermanagh records that can be found on websites. There also is a good Fermanagh listserv --- fermanagh-gold@rootsweb.com --- whose members will help.

Good luck.

Myles Johnson

*******************************

Do you have any connections with Walter and Ann (Armstrong) Beatty who left Enniskillen and settled in Morgan Co, OH in 1850? Looking for their Beatty relatives, who per family legend, had already settled near there. You may email direct to kcopp@wi.rr.com.
