I am related to the Beckerdites as well. Through Nancy Beckerdite, whose father was Brice Beckerdite. What is ironic is that I grew up in Sophia, NC (Randolph County) on Beckerdite Road. I am still researching my family history and trying to figure out what Beckerdites owned/lived on Beckerdite Rd.

Also, I am looking for the parents of Isabella, who married Brice Beckerdite. Any help would be great!

Hello, I know this question was from several years ago, but if you are still interested...
It seems that ALL of the Beckerdites in this country came from Richard Beckerdite who lived in MD born about 1690. He worked for the church there as a clerk.
The Beckerdite name is German-Jewish. It means "of the Beckers".
It is an occupational name meaning 'baker of bread or bricks'.
From what my husband (who is a Beckerdte) has found they were being run out of Germany/Austria in the 1100-1200's and one family was sponsered by a wealthy relative, so to be sure that it was only his family that he paid for he had them attach "dite" to the Becker name for transport out of the area. Only a few of them kept the dite most dropped it after they left Germany/Austria.
Hope this helps.

Sarah Beckerdite / Eli Nimmo / Mary Tracy - Dallas County, MO

I have hit a road block on what happened to Eli Nimmo and his first (Sarah Beckerdite) and second wife (Mary Tracy).
After the 1870 census the seem to disappear. Other than Eli marries Mary in 1873. Then I find nothing. One of Eli's and Sarahs daughter shows up in the 1880 census living with Sarah's brother John Beckerdite. But, I've yet to locate a cemetery or any record of her parents past 1870.

Dates and records below as I have them.

Eli E. (or W.) Nimmo (son of JAMES NICODEMUS5, JOHN4, ROBERT3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1844 in Dallas County, Missouri. He married (1) SARAH BECKERDITE, daughter of ALEXANDER BECKERDITE and ABIGAIL DELAPP. She was born Abt. 1843 in Loavis County, KY, and died Bet. May 1872 - Jul 1873. He married (2) MARY E. TRACY 03 Jul 1873 in Dallas County, Missouri. She was born 1845 in Missouri.

Notes for ELI W. NIMMO:
Living in Dallas County, MO 1870 Census

Children of ELI NIMMO and SARAH BECKERDITE are:
i. NANCY E. J NIMMO, b. May 1870.
ii. MARY ELIZABETH NIMMO, b. 16 Aug 1872, Dallas Co., MO; d. 14 Nov 1911, Dallas Co, Mo.

MARY ELIZABETH NIMMO born 16 Aug 1872 in Dallas Co., MO, and died 14 Nov 1911 in Dallas Co, Mo.

Married MOSES "TILLEY" ARTILLUS JOHNSTON 21 Jul 1889 in Dallas Co, Mo,

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH NIMMO:

1880 Dallas County Census indicates she is listed living with John Beckerdite family -- her uncle.

Mary Elizabeth Nimmo death certificate lists Eli Nimmo and Sarah Beckerdite as parents.

Burial: 15 Nov 1911, Mt.
All of the info you gave me matches with mine except for one thing-as far as I know my great grandmother Grace Beckerdite Potter was only married once-to my great grandfather Albert Clay Potter. The things that match up are the fact that Grace's father was named John Wesley Beckerdite, and she had an older brother named Charles Elster Beckerdite, born on May 27, 1883, died September 17, 1906. Grace was born in Dallas CO.,MO on July 11, 1895. She married Albert Clay Potter on December 23, 1916 in Buffalo, MO. She and her family moved to Springfield, Greene CO., MO around 1922-23.They lived at 2008 N. Howard on Springfield. Albert and Grace's oldest child is my grandmother, Lorene Evenell (Potter) Anderson.Grace died in Springfield, MO on July 20, 1981-just nine days after her eighty -sixth birthday.

Please let me know if this matches your information. If it does, I think you and I are third cousins, and our grandparents would be first cousins. Please respond soon.

Annette Abbott

Brice Beckerdite's unknown descendants

I'm wondering if any of the Beckerdite researchers might have some knowledge of the following. My gggrandfather was John C. Stever. His mother was Eliza Jane Stever. It has been tradition and fairly well documented by many researchers that John C. was Eliza's son born out of wedlock. No one has been able to find any information on his father. Now is where I come in. When my ggrandmother Olla Stever passed away. We found in her belongings 2 bible pages with family members names, wedding dates, death dates, and mostly birthdates. One of the entries is for John C. Brackenridy Stever born June 27th, 1869. Also listed is a John A. Logan Stever born November 20th, 1869. Both these children are in the household of Nicholas Smith Stever in the 1870 census of Webster Co., MO. John A. is son of Nicholas. So John C. was likely son of Eliza. Now, my question is, could the father of John C. Stever be one of Brice Beckerdite's sons child? I know that the Stever family was not well educated and I think the Brackenridy is really Beckerdite misspelled. Nicholas Stever lived in close proximity to Brice Beckendite in 1860 census and right next to Nicholas brother George. So the opportunity for the children of the two to meet was very easy to imagine. If any one has any ideas I would love to hear from you.

Re: Beckerdite origins

I've been working on the Beckerdite genealogy for years and have come to the conclusion that the name is English in origin, and is a derivation of the name, Bickerdike or Bickerdyke. The earliest record in the US that I've found is the reference To Richard Beckerdite, who lived in Maryland. However, I've never been able to find documented information of his birth origins. There are many Bickerdike's in the US, Canada and throughout Ireland, Scotland, England and Australia. Even the Richard Beckerdite of Maryland is found with the Bickerdike spelling in some documentation. Every single Beckerdite that I've found thus far has been able to trace roots through the Beckerdites of North Carolina. I tend to believe, therefore, that this branch is the only group of Bickerdikes who changed their name.

I checked with my dad and I found out that I was mistaken about Grace. I had her mixed up with Cloe, Grace's sister. Cloe was married 3 times (all her husbands died). She was a very large pleasant woman. My dad said that he can slightly remember Grace. He seems to remember that she was married to a man that they referred to Lish (for Elisha). They used to live on the farm that Sy Potter lived one between Fair Grove and Elkland. I didn't personally know Sy, but I knew his sister. I believe her name is Jewell Canafax (I knew her son, Jack, much better.) Sorry about the mixup.

I can't say indisputably, but I believe this Grace Beckerdite may have been my g-g-aunt. I remember her well from when I was a child in the 1950's. She was a very large woman who had been married 2 or 3 times and was an excellent cook. I used to see her when I went with my mother to WPFA meetings. I'm sure I remember her so well because she loved children and paid a lot of attention to me. I remember her as having been named Grace Potter at that time. I may be mistaking this Grace Beckerdite with another, however, because I do know that there was another Grace Beckerdite who was a sister to my g-grandfather Charles Beckerdite. They were both children of John Wesley.

I think you may be mistaken about Brice having married both Isabella Byrnes and Adaline. There were two Brice's, the second one having been born in about 1819. This Brice was my g-g-g-grandfather. He married Adaline in about 1846 (I have a copy of their marriage bond). They, then moved to Missouri, settling for a short period near St. Joseph, then moving to a farm near Elkland, MO. I believe that that the earlier Brice, who married Isabella, was either the latter's father or uncle, although I don't believe there is any documented proof.

Hi Annette-I am descended from Brice and Adaline by way of their daughter Lovina Jane Beckerdite who married James Hamilton Jones in Webster Co., MO. I have quite a bit on the Jones, but still piecing the Beckerdites together. I have a picture of a Mrs. Wes Beckerdite who was a midwife in Dallas Co., MO. She delivered my father and all his brothers except one. Is this John Wesley's wife? Would love to trade info.
Surname: Beckerdite

Hi! Beckerdite is an English name; that I do know for certain. I have not been able to find an exact meaning for it; however, there is an old English word "bekkr" which means "beside a running brook". Many people took on surnames describing the places where they lived. Perhaps this is one of those names. ~Wanda~

Her Mothers maiden
name was Beckerdite, Mary Melinda, born in Missouri. Her Father's name was
James Dill, born in Missouri.
Hi, The LDS site has a marriage record for Richard Beckerdite and Mary Wright. They were married Aug. 22, 1776 in Middletown, Frederick Co. MD.They must have moved to NC soon after. This is what I have on their children :
Nancy Ann b. 1777
John 1778
Amos 1781
Ellenda 1783
Richard Jr. 1785
Ezra 1788
Mary 1790
Brice 1793
Rebecca 1795
Rachel 1797
Bethel 1799
Ninevah 1801
Catherine 1803
I have marriage records for most of the children which were gathered from various sources. I have one that shows Brice Beckerdite married Isabel Byrns Sep.21,1824.I don't know if this is your ancestor or not ,but it might be a place to start. My husband is descended from both Nancy Ann and Rebecca, because of some marrying cousins.I am probably leaving some stuff out so please contact me personally if you need more info. or want me to give you my sources. E-mail is twmsmith@oio.net It is nice to contact someone else doing Beckerdites, there are few of us I think.
Best wishes, Maureen
