Andrew Beckley

Hi im really trying to find out more info on my great grandfather Andrew Phillip Beckley, heres what i know :

He was born around 1871 in Worcester.

In the 1881 census he appears in a workhouse in Fyfield, Berkshire, alone, no parents!!!

He does not appear in the 1891 census.

We then believe he married my Great Grandmother Emma Harper in 1900. they then both appear in the 1901 census in a workhouse in Oxfordshire along with a 10 year old also called Andrew Beckley. I dont know if this was their son as when i researched the 1911 census the younger of the Andrews was not there!!

Im trying to find out who My great grandfathers parents were and where he was in 1891 and if indeed the young Andrew Beckley with him in the workhouse in 1901 was their son??

Edwin Beckley

I am looking for Edwin James Beckley born 1878 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England. I cannot find any trace of him after 1891. I am wondering if he may have emigrated to the USA. I found a Ed Beckley leaving Liverpool England on 27/3/1895 heading for New York. He was a clerk and single. I am wondering if this my Edwin and wondered if anyone has the USA census that they could look at for me please. He sailed on the Teutonic. His father is Edwin Beckley and Martha and he had a brother Charles Henry

thanks
Ann

Also, any other information you have would be appreciated. For instance, I am curious as to how George and Lydia came to adopt my mom. Did they know her biological mom and/or dad?

I have a picture of Florence Lillian Beckley, taken in Sept. 1925, standing with my father and his siblings. I have no info on Florence's bio. parents. Also have a picture of Lydia Jane Beckley, her mother Sarah Allen, her daughter Minnie Maudell Stephenson and Minnie's son (my father) William George Gray, taken in May 1925. My focus is on the Gray/Eslick families of Elk Point and nearby areas.

I'm interested in the Beckleys in Shelby Co. KY. I have Eleanor "Nelly" Beckley who married Stephen Griffith in Shelby Co. KY Aug 9, 1806. Nelly was born in about 1788, possibly in NY. Stephen and Nelly (Beckley) Griffith moved to Indiana, then to Illinois. Would love to know who Nellie Beckley's parents and siblings were.

Hi Levi,
My great-great-great grandfather was Simpson Levi Beckley, who was born in Shelby County, Kentucky on April 11, 1813, his father/family moved from Louden County .Virginia. His grandfather was John Beckley who was killed in the Revolutionary War. Simpson Levi Beckley as a child moved with his family to Switzerland County, Indiana.

I was just reading a book written by my great-great grandmother, Mrs. W.L. Williams (daughter of Simpson Levi B.). She, along with her husband, Col. Williams founded the First Baptist Church of Dallas (Tx). I am from Dallas and know some of the stories about them. There is Beckley Avenue in Dallas named after Levi or John Beckley. She was also instrumental in the founding of Buchner's Baptist Home for children, an orphanige. In her book, she says that all Beckleys are related. I am a Smith.

My family line is from Sarah Jane Beckley brother, John Beckley[Berkley]. He married [into my family] Mary Owen in Swansea on 23-3-1901. I know nothing after that about them. Will have to wait until the next census release in 2011 to find out if they had any children. Do you have any information?
Thank you again
Cerys

A Rowlandson - Beckley Mystery

An entry in the Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut, 1636-1776, p. 211 contains an entry that may hold a clue to the identity of Hannah, the wife of Zebedee Beckley (1734-1776), of Wethersfield, Conn. Hannah's maiden name is not contained in Sheppard's Beckley Genealogy (1948).

The entry under consideration pertains to a petition lodged against "Abraham Harriss, of Weathersfield" by "Joseph Roulandson" a minor under 21 who presented a petition through his guardian, Zebedee Beckley, also of Wethersfield. Joseph was joined in this action by his sister, Hannah, also a minor, who petitioned through her guardian, Caleb Galpin of Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., Mass.

A little research into the Rowlandsons reveals that Joseph and Hannah were the orphaned children of Phineas Rowlandson (30 Aug 1731-28 Jan 1759) and his wife Ruth Williams.

Phineas Rowlandson had one brother, Wilson (30 Sep 1733-1 Jul 1775), and two sisters, Thankful (b. 13 Aug 1727) widow of Captain William Ford (and mother of eight children) and Hannah, b. 7 Aug 1729.

The only record I can find of Hannah Rowlandson was her marriage to David "Pick" (Peck?) in Farmington, CT on June 1, 1749. I have not been able to determine whether Hannah and David Peck had children.

While the Beckley Genealogy (Zebedee Beckley is covered in pp. 41-49) does not reveal the maiden name of Zebedee's wife, Hannah, a lengthly list of real estate transactions is included and beginning with the first one (1758), four of the deeds mention Phineas Rowlandson.

Question: is it plausible to suppose that Zebedee and Hannah Beckley became the guardians of Joseph Rowlandson because Hannah Beckley was, in reality, the sister of Joseph's father, Phineas, and Hannah married Zebedee Beckley as her second husband?

Can anyone help solve this mystery?

-- Richard Cochran, Big Rapids, Michigan

Re: Clara Pauline Beckley and brother Robert Pitts Beckley

Thank you for answering my query. I think that although the names are pretty much the same, we may be looking at different people. Robert Pitts Beckley would have been named after my Pitts family, which points to his grandfather being Robert Tyler Pitts (1835-1911), the father of Mary Ella (1867-?) and Sarah Esther (1869-1922). Mary Ella married Benjamin Franklin Greenwalt (1865-1912).I am thinking that perhaps Mary Ella may be the mother of the two children in question since her husband died in 1912, she may have married again to a Mr. Beckley. We are not positive that his name was David. We do know that Sarah Esther married James Orr (1866-?) of Pennsylvania and had three children, the last one in 1896. We figured that she was the one who married Mr. Beckley and had the two children in question. I have the picture of the two children if you would like to have it. You may at least see some family resemblances. The picture was taken in 1926. The children look to be about two and four years old. The picture came from my grandmother's album.

Clara Pauline and her brother Robert are the mystery people in my tree. I have a picture of them that was taken in 1926 when Clara was almost four and Robert was almost two years old. I believe that they may be the children of Sarah Esther Pitts (1873-1922) born and died in Alexandria, Virginia and David Beckley (1874-?). David Beckley was born in Williamsport, Washington, Maryland.

I have a previous marriage for Sarah Esther Pitts to James Orr (1866-?)of Pennsylvania. They had three children as follows, James Lee Orr and Robert Lee Orr B. 1893 and Sarah Pauline Orr (1896-1963)who married Boyd Porter Warne (1897-1967 of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Any information will be appreciated.

I find it interesting that one of our family lines lived in Virginia sometime around 1918 to mid 1920's before moving to Muskegon County, MI, and that at least one of their children mentioned in your post was born in VA. Clara was born June 14, 1922 in Victoria, VA and Robert was born july 24, 1924. There parents were Orange Theodore (1874-1957) and Clara Bell (Wells) Beckley (1884-1973). I may be mistaken, but I believe Clara (the mother) lived for a time in Virginia after her husband died (i.e., sometime between 1957 and 1973). The family had 10 children that I know of, so one of the children may have settled in Virginia that the mother lived there later. ??

Jesse Beckley - Wisconsin

Hi all, I am trying to learn more about Jesse Beckley who lived in Wisconsin from around mid 1860s to his death - when I am not sure. His first wife was Margaret Jones (whom he married in 1848 in Ohio) and his second wife was Louisa Eversion (m. 1879 in Milwaukee).

He owned the Gas Works in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. I am not sure how many children he had - at least three I know of: Cornelia, Arthur and George.

Any information about him or his family would be most welcomed. I believe that my great-great-grandmother was his first wife's sister.

Thank you!
Liza

Hi. My mom's maiden name was (Margaret Jeanette) Beckley, her parents were Roy Leviticus Beckley and Margret Ann Fauk (Frillman). Roys family lived in Springfield, Mo. and he was born around 1896, had older bro., Bill and older sister, Florence. Great uncle Bill lived in Texas, he had 2 daughters, Billie and "?" Beckley, probably born early 1920's and may have never married. Roy's dad was possibly Wm., and another was a cousin Bob Beckly who married Grace and they lived in St Louis, had 3 girls, Robin, Eloise and Esther Beckley. My aunt was Caroline Beckley, married Earl Claus, stayed in St Louis, and my mom married Lou Faggetii, and also stayed in St Louis. I am (Jen)Jeanette Louise Faggetti Phelan. I was told "our" Beckleys came from Pa., and that there was a relative who was a chaplin in the Civil War, from Pa.,(last name either Beckley or Stern).
Does any of this sound close to what you know about "your" group of Beckley's?
Please email anytime w/info or ?'s.
Thanks.

Jen Phelan

jen.phelan@gmail.com

PS I am completely new at this, hope I have helped a a bit and also hope I was not too "wordy".

Thanks for your reply. I think your John Beckley and mine are the same. John Beckley had an aunt named Sarah Jane Beckley who married a Thomas Stevens. John and two brothers were born out of wedlock to Emily Beckley born 1861 in Woolsery Nr Clovelly North Devon. Emily married a John Johns in 1887 and at that time changed her name to Emma. Our family descend from Emily Beckley as our grandfather was one of John Beckleys brothers. We can give you information on the Beckley family back to 1796 so far if you are interested.
Re: John Beckley/Berkley from Covelly Devon

John Beckley's mother was Emily Beckley b:28.02.1861 she died on 17 Dec 1924 in Bideford Hospital, North Devon. She had John, Albert J and Arthur William Beckley before she married so I do not know who his father was. She seems to have been quite a lady and married a John Johns on 18 Aug 1887 in a Registry Office in the Holsworth area. This was her first marriage and his 4th. There were several children from this marriage. Johns lived with his grandparents who were James Beckley who married Mary Ann nee Mugford. Have you looked at my family tree on Ancestry. It is under the name The Beckley Family. If so you can get a lot of information there. I have got more information than on my tree as I have a large tree drawn out and pinned on my wall. If you look up James Beckley on the 1881 Census for Woolfardisworthy, Devon you will see John lived with him. In 1991 John was an agricultural labourer but I know nothing of him until 1901 Census or after. I will willingly fill you in on anything re other brothers and sister and relations if you can't view my tree. Please don't hesitate to contact me again I'm quite happy to help if I can.
