Russell BECKWITH m. Rosetta DOUGLAS in NY 1800s

Hi,
Is anyone researching Russell BECKWITH, born about 1814 in Chemengo County, NY? He died Feb 1888 in Wheeling Township, Livingston County, Missouri. They lived for a while in Chautauqua county, NY, at least 1850-70. the NY 1865 census has him as being born in Chemengo county.

I've got them with at least 4 children
Harriet BECKWITH b. 1840
Charles b. 1842
Sarah Amelia b. 1848
Russell D. b. 1851

I don't have much and am researching the DOUGLAS side but am willing to share what I have.

Shelia,I can put you in touch with the children of Bud Stevens who was a brother to Bill.I knew Clara and JB .My sis was married to Odell Beckwith at one time.He is a first cousin to Bill and Bud.They are both buried in Witherspoon cem. at Vandervoort. Obit: Ross Beckwith of Nebraska (1925-2005)

Ross Duncan Beckwith, the son of Charles and Agnes (Duncan) Beckwith was born on February 13, 1924 on a Boone County farm in the Dennison Community west of Albion. His family belonged to the Akron Presbyterian Church. He attended elementary school at Boone County School District 24 and graduated from Albion High School in 1942.

On August 8, 1947 Ross was united in marriage to Mary Karges. They lived and farmed northwest of Albion until 1981, when they moved to town. Mary passed away on June 7, 1992. On October 1 1997 Ross married Janet Henderson and they lived in Albion.

Ross was a member of the United Methodist Church in Albion. He served on the Dennison School Board and the Co-op Board. Ross was also a member of the Albion Booster Club as well as the UNL Beef Club, and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association.

On Wednesday, February 2, 2005 Ross passed away at Bryan LGH in Lincoln at 80 years of age.
He is survived by his wife Janet of Albion; daughter Linda Smith and husband Roger of Hot Springs Village, AR; 2 sons Bradley and wife Jane, and Charles Brian and wife Deb all of Albion; 7 grandchildren: Stacy Smith-Foley and husband Chris of Knoxville, TN; Jamie Jackson and husband Drew of Little Rock, AR; Jeff Beckwith and wife Stephanie, Megan, Sam, Beau, and Bobbi Beckwith all of Albion; 1 great-grandson Christopher Foley, Jr.; 2 stepsons: Steve Henderson and wife Connie of Huxley, IA; Kevin Henderson and wife Laura of Aurora, NE; 5 step-grandchildren: Hadley Henderson and wife Abby; Stephenie, Shea, Ashton, and Brock Henderson, and his mother-in-law Gladys Larson of Bertrand, NE.

I am a direct line of Matthew Beckwith the immigrant through Jonah who returned to England. My gggrandfather was a descendant of Jonah who returned to Rhode Island and was a silversmith. I would love to have any documentation you have of this line.

Joseph and Rebecca (nee Davey) Beckwith are my g.g.g.grandparents.
I would appreciate any history that you have.
My direct line from Joseph and Rebecca is their eldest son William.

I wasnt sure about the area's your line came from but the other name of cranmer rings a bell My line ran back to a joseph beckwith and rebecca davey in rivenhall essex if you think we may still be on the same line it would be great to hear back I also have a John Beckwith and Sarah colt born approx 1724 (if my memory serves me right)

As far as I know Samuel & John were granted separate pieces of land.

My great aunt told me that they were Tory's during the war. I'm not quite clear on what that means exactly.

What child of John's do you descend from? I descend through Capt. Samuels son Samuel born 1709.

I believe that Matthew came from Wiltshire England. I am 11th generation & live in CT. Had I known you were visiting Lyme I would love to have met & worked with you to gather information. My Capt Samuel migrated from CT to Nova Scotia. My Ggrandmother Hattie May was a daughter of Samuel Beckwith & Jemima Saunders & lived in Berwick, NS She & her sisters migrated back to the states in the early 1900's after their father died.

I am looking for anyone w/ information on the Beckwith Family mostly of Maine. My maternal great grandfater was Clyde Elwyn Beckwith. Unfortunately he and my great grandmother (Natalie R Ward) seperated when my grandfather (Clyde Elwyn Beckwith Jr) was young. I've never really known much about the Beckwith heritage of my family, besides the fact that they mostly live in Maine, and I know that Clyde remarried and had more children. I'd love to get any information that anyone could help me with.

Yes. On page 121, the book mentions Handly Beckwith moving from New London to Nova Scotia before 1798. His son, Mayhew Beckwith was a member of provincial parliament from Hicks County for 20 years.

Your branch of the family is very close to mine. Samuel Todd Beckwith's father was Horace Beckwith, born Jan 5th, 1828 in New York. Horace's sister, Mary Beckwith married Samuel Todd on April 8th, 1845. That's the connection to the Todd family.

I was just able to purchase a newly reprinted copy off of amazon.com. It's called "The Beckwiths" by Paul Beckwith, and is a reprint off of microfilm. My branck of the family is originally from Waterford, Connectict, and we moved from New York City to Baltimore in 1832. The only downside to my copy of the book is that pages 14 and 15 are missing, but they can be found on google books, and printed out. Here's the link for amazon.

I cannot locate James Henry Beckwith, but the time line indicates his father came to America in the early part of the 1800's and it also indicates he was familar with the Sea. He probably sailed into Boston or New York and probably lived in New York or maybe Connecticut. The Senaca's were part of the Mohegan Tribe that lived in New York and Connecticut, near the Connecticut River or the Hudson River. If I were you I would check with the records in Salt Lake City. The records I have for the Lees of Saybrook Ct., only go thru 1640 - 1720. Nan

I cannot find Daniel Beckwith born in 1765, but give me some time and I will get back to you. I did see 2 Daniel Beckwith's that serve as Privates in the U.S. Army during the Civil War and they were both from Willett, N.Y. I do know my ancestor Hezekiah Beckwith (Great Grandson of Matthew Beckwith) migrated from Lyme, Connecticut to Dutchess County, New York in 1790. Nan Beckwith

Matthew Beckwith came from Yorkshire England. His first known Grandfather, Sir Hugh de Malebiss was given a hamlet by William the Conqueror, for is loyalty at the Battle of Hastings. His Great Grandson Sir Hercules de Malebiss married Lady Dame Bruce whose family gave the couple land.
"Land by a Brook" Brook = Beck Land = worth/with. Our name derives from Beckwithshaw, England in Yorkshire, England. We were related to the warlords, the Percys, the Bruce family. In 2010 there will be a summer event at the Thomas Lee House, which was built in 1660, near Saybrook Ct. Joseph Beckwith the 2nd married Mary Lee and it was Joseph and Thomas Lee the 2nd that formed one of the first basic civil governments, decades before the Revolution. I plan on attending and please pull up "The Thomas Lee House" of Connecticut and it provides the history on how our people lived in the Connecticut River Valley. Nan Beckwith

You mean Samuel born in Lyme, May 14th 1709 who had a land grant in N.S. he married Miriam Marvin daughter of Capt Reanld Marvin.
If you read the story of Roger's Rangers they fought with us in the French and Indian War, but they did not take sides with us in the Revolution, only the Navy of France sided with us, because of their dislike for the English. One of my Uncles "Elijah" left for Canada because he sided with the English. I will check out Noble and get back to you. Nan

Nan,Google has "The Beckwith Book". I now have it on my favorites. Matthew Beckwith came to America (I believe) around 1635. The reason why he came to America was to make money. He ventured with 2 other men in building a Barque that sailed to Barbadoes for sugar, to make rum. It meant that slaves were in the equation, but he did not own a slave. The Beckwith women were devout Christians, but the Beckwith men were Merchants, Defenders of the Colony serving in the Connecticut Militia and by the 3rd century formed the 1st Civil Government, the seeds of Liberty!

I think I am decended from John, Samuel's brother. But they were New England planters. They arrived in NS in 1760. So I'm 6 generations away from them.

I have a very annoyining problem though. My Great great grand father was Noble Beckwith but he seemed to appear in Bridgetown NS from out of nowhere in about 1830-1840 and claim the old Beckwith land grant. What is really mystifying is why it was available. And I can find absolutely nothing about this guy. Do you have any advice?

By the way, do you know anything about the family during the revolution? Did any of the gang from Canada come home to help? What side diod they fight on?

I think I've found something about "a" Noble. Born in great Barrington.(p. 141 of "The Beckwiths" ) Looks like he is about the right age, but I have no idea how he would be connected to a new england planter. Do you?

James Henry Beckwith. Family said James Beckwith's father
came from New Guinea and his mother was a Seneca Indian.

My Beckwith ancestors are from Essex area of Rivenhall Bradwell Bocking. I can help with history if this is the Beckwith family that you are requiring history of. Also Australian Beckwiths from Brunswick & Coburg I can help with. I do have some photos of my Victorian Beckwiths.
