Found this on the net....:
David Hudson BEDELL and his father David BEDELL, who had been a soldier
in the American Revolution, arrived in Greene County, Missouri, in
January 1834. They came by covered wagon from Baird's Forge in Burke
County, North Carolina and settled in the vicinity of Ebenezer, about 10
miles north of Springfield. The wife of David Hudson BEDELL was Marina
WALLIS whose family also settled in that area. The Bedell and Wallis
families homesteaded many acres north of, and including, Crystal Cave,
and became prosperous farmers.

Leanah BEDELL, a family slave, accompanied the Bedells to Missouri.
Leanah was thought to have been born the latter part of 1818 in North
Carolina.  She had nine children:  Julia Ann, born January 26, 1839;
Betsy Lucretia, born February 5, 1841; Nathan Greene, born January 12,
1843; Logan Henderson, born February 9, 1845; James Monroe, born
November 19, 1846; William Hiram, born April 16, 1849; Millie Narcissa,
born March 8, 1851; Eliza Katherine, born April 22, 1853; and Enos
Hildon, born March 30, 1856. The slave children of Leanah were given
the surname "BEDELL" as it was customary for slaves to have the name of
their masters.

As the black Bedell children grew, they farmed and worked alongside the
white Bedell and Wallis families and became a close knit unit. The
group built a log church (Old Salem Methodist) and both black and white
worshipped together.

By the time the Civil War broke out the Bedell and Wallis families had
accumulated a large portion of north Greene County. One of the Bedells
was known to say that an aunt took some of the black Bedells to
Fayetteville during the Civil War to keep them from being forced into
the Union Army. However, it was reported that Logan BEDELL was involved
in the battle at Wilson's Creek, south of Springfield.

Following the death of David Hudson BEDELL, sometime in 1860, the
Bedells found it necessary to divide their property, including slaves.
The family members decided to sell the slaves within the family to keep
them together, with the exception of Julia who was sold and shipped to
Texas. Some descendants of Julia are reported to be living in the Fort
Worth-Dallas area. {There are conflicting stories as to why Julia was
sold.}

Details of the slave sale are as follows: Marina BEDELL, widow of said
David H. BEDELL, chose to take as her dower slaves Leanah and Nathan, at
their valuation, being $1,550, leaving a balance of $5, 850 to be
divided among their heirs, as follows:

Allotted to Myra E. WALLIS girl Betsy age
19 $1,150
to Sarah L. ALSUP boy Logan age
15 1,050
to Melissa girl
Lisa age 7 650
to Mahlon L. BEDELL boy James age
13 950
to Allen L. BEDELL boy Wm. Hiram age
11 850
to Matilda girl Narcissa
age 9 700
to Charles W. BEDELL boy Enos age
4 500

All the above slaves owners were children of David H. and Marina Bedell,
and all of the slaves were kept within the Wallis-Bedell families,
except Julia, who was not included in the sale. Those receiving slaves
of a higher value were to pay the other heirs so all would have equal
value.

George CRITTENDEN, an 18 year old runaway slave born in Izard County,
Arkansas, volunteered for the Union Army in Springfield, MO. He was a
cook for the troops during the battle of Wilson's Creek. George was a
close friend of the RAY family whose house was on the battlefield and in
later years members of the Ray family visited George's family and
brought in rabbits, quail and chickens to sell.

After being discharged from the army, George CRITTENDEN met Eliza BEDELL
on the Springfield public square. George and Eliza began a courtship
which culminated in their marriage in the late 1860's. They moved to
Springfield, where George worked as a coachman for the Fellows Wagon
Factory until he retired.

During the late 1800's there was a large population of blacks in
Springfield and many were involved in various businesses and
occupations. After the 1906 Easter Sunday lynching of three blacks,
many left their homes and never returned. The Crittenden and Bedell
families were among the few who remained.

The Crittendens were among the original founders of Pitts Chapel
Methodist Church, now located at Benton and Tampa.

George was prosperous and well respected in the community. By 1920, he
owned four houses in the 700 block of North Sherman Street. The family
lost all of those houses, except the original home place at 723 N.
Sherman, when the FHA came into existence; there was confusion regarding
proof of payment and no receipts could be found. George and Eliza had
nine children; Lou, Stella, Effie, Orhro, Jess, Margie, Thomas, Ora and
Roy.

Cassandra
Do a Google search on Alabama Archives and go to that website...then find the 1867 voters census...search for Bedell (just that in search field). Several AA Bedells there. I am a white Bedell whose ancestors came from that area (Macon, Russel, Lee County) and were slave owners...I have a few names in a will, and a little other stuff...not sure it will help but maybe...contact me by e-mail if you want...glad to share what I have. I also have a listing of some Springfield MO Bedell slaves, though this David Bedell is not in my family (that I know of.)

Hello. If you ever find a connection to Boston, MA, for other people I research a Charles BEDELL, b1880 in MA. He had a brother, Frank, and their father was Abial BEDELL from NH.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(I understand Frank BEDELL had many children and the extended family lived in or near Medford, MA. See the archives for more details.)

Frank BEDELL, b1879 MA, Charles BEDELL, b1880 MA (Medford, MA)

Hello,

I just checked the archives of this Board and it seems I haven't posted a query about these 2 brothers in several years. I'd just like to say that the grandchildren of Charles BEDELL would like to find out more information about him. And, they would like to know what he looked like.

And, as adults, they never knew about their grandfather's brother, Frank BEDELL, who had a large family. So, they didn't know about all these "cousins" in and around Medford, MA. They mostly have lived in the Springfield, MA, area. So, they'd like to find descendants of Frank; maybe they have pictures to share.

The story of Charles BEDELL is complicated. I am not related to him - except through my grandfather's 2nd marriage. But, I did try to find information about him for my "step-cousins." And, I don't think I found too much. Please see my postings from 2004 to 2006 for more details. (Search the archives for Boston or Medford.)

A quick summary is that, reportedly, a young divorcee', Mrs. Hazel (SHAW) McAVOUR, left her husband and young son in New Brunswick and came down to Boston, MA. Soon after arriving (1900?), she married Charles BEDELL and had 4 children with him. But she also divorced him. When the children were all in school, she met my grandfather. He and my grandmother had divorced in 1935. They each were living with other people and each soon remarried.

Silas Dean LEWIS and Mrs. Hazel (SHAW) (McAVOUR) BEDELL did not have children, but "Sy" became the step-father to the 4 BEDELL children. They soon moved to the Springfield, MA, area. But, while spending a few years in CT, she died unexpectedly. The 4 BEDELL children were then adults and had recently married.

The children of these BEDELL children were not really close and they never knew about their BEDELL grandfather. When I "found" these children on-line, we arranged to meet, and we drove out to Springfield to meet them. They hadn't seen each other in many years. And, some of them knew my grandfather, and some of them didn't even know that my grandfather had married for the 3rd time.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(My grandfather, Silas Dean LEWIS, had the 3rd wife, Mrs. Yvonne (JARRY) LEWIS, and she had 5 children with her late husband. So, my grandfather had more step-children in the Springfield, MA, area. We knew them until his passing ~1960. But, we hadn't seen the BEDELL children since ~1948.)

P.S. One question we have is whether Charles BEDELL had other marriages, either before he married Hazel, or after he divorced Hazel. I seem to remember there was another wife, but I'll have to check the archives of the Lists to see if I'm remembering correctly.

Well, if we're talking about the same Absolom Bedell that came to Collin County Texas, then I'm descended from Absolom's son William Franklin Bedell. He had a daughter, Lily, who was my grandmother and whom I was named for. I've just started researching this side of my family so I apologize if I've confused some names. I know that the patriarch of the family in Georgia was also named Absolom, who had a son named Micajah, who then had the Absolom who came to Texas. Is this correct?
-Lily
P.S. Thanks for allowing me into your myfamily.com site!!!

Hi! I'm a Bedell. Absolom Bedell, the one who came to Collin County Texas, is my great-great-grandfather which makes Micajah Bedell my 3x great-grandfather. I was wondering if you could allow me into your myfamily.com site. I'm new to genealogy and just started researching the Bedells and not really sure how to go about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My email address is lilygracy@yahoo.com.
Thanks,
Lily

Logan
Editor’s note: Mrs. Ora Elizabeth LOGAN is the daughter of Alberta Northcutt
ELLIS and a ggrandaughter of George and Eliza (Bedell) CRITTENDEN.

David Hudson BEDELL and his father David BEDELL, who had been a soldier in the American Revolution, arrived in Green County, Missouri, in January 2834. They came by covered wagon from Baird’s Forge in Burke County, North Carolina and settled in the vicinity of Ebenezer, about 10 miles north of Springfield. The wife of David Hudson BEDELL was Marina WALLIS whose family also settled in that area. The Bedell and Wallis families homesteaded many acres north of, and including, Crystal Cave, and became prosperous farmers.

Leanah BEDELL, a family slave, accompanied the Bedells to Missouri. Leanah was thought to have been born ine latter part of 1818 in North Carolina. She had nine children: Julia Ann, born January 26, 1839; Betsy Lucretia, born February 5, 1841; Nathan Greene, born January 12, 1843; Logan Henderson, born February 9, 1845; James Monroe, born November 19., 1846; William Hiram, born April 16, 1849; Millie Narcissa, born March 8, 1851; Eliza Katherine, born April 22, 1853; and Enos Hildon, born March 30, 1856. The slave children of Leanah were given the surname “BEDELL” as it was customary for slaves to have the name of their masters.

As the black Bedell children grew, they farmed and worked alongside the white Bedell and Wallis families and became a close knit unit. The group built a log church (Old Salem Methodist) and both black and white worshipped together.

By the time the Civil War broke out the Bedell and Wallis families had accumulated a large portion of north Green County. One of the Bedells was known to say that an aunt took some of the black Bedells to Fayetteville during the Civil War to keep them from being forced into the Union Army. However, it was reported that Logan BEDELL was involved in the battle at Wilson’s Creek, south of Springfield.

Following the death of David Hudson Bedell, April 7, 1869, the Bedells found it necessary to divide their property, including slaves. The family members decided to sell the slaves within the family to keep them together, with the exception of Julia Ann who was sold and shipped to Texas. Some descendants of Julia are reported to be living in the Fort Worth - Dallas area. (There are conflicting stories as to why Julia was sold. )

Details of the slave sale are as follows: Marina BEDELL, widow of said David H. BEDELL< chose to take as her dower slaves Leanah and Nathan, at their valuation, being $1,550, leaving a balance of $5, 850 to be divided among their heirs as follows:
Allotted to Myra E. Wallis: girl Betsy	age 16 $1,150
To Sarah L. Alsup: boy Logan	age 15 1,050
To Mellissa girl Lisa age 7 650
To Mahion L. Bedell	boy James	age 13 950
To Allen L. Bedell	boy William Hiram age 11 850
To Matilda girl Narcissa	age 9 700
To Charles W. Bedell	boy Enos	age 4 500

All the above slaves owners were children of David H. Bedell and Marina Wallis Bedell and all of the slaves were kept within the Wallis-Bedell families, except Julia, who was not included in the sale. Those receiving slaves of a higher value were to pay the other heirs so all would have equal value.

George CRITTENDEN, am 18 year old runaway slave born in Izard County, Arkansas, volunteered for the Union Army in Springfield, Mo. He was a cook for the troops during the battle of Wilson’s Creek. George was a close ferend of the RAY family whose house was on the battlefield and in later years members of the Ray family visited George’s family and brought in rabbits, quail and chickens to sell.

After being discharged from the army, George CRITTENDEN, met Eliza BEDELL on the Springfield public square. George and Eliza began a courtship which culminated in their marriage in the late 1860’s. They moved to Springfield, where George worked as a coachman for the Fellows Wagon Factory until he retired.

During the late 1800’s there was a large population of blacks in Springfield and many were involved in various businesses and occupations. After the 1906 Easter Sunday lynching of three blacks, many left their homes and never returned. The Crittenden and Bedell families were among the few who remained.

The Crittendens were among the original founders of Pitts Chapel Methodist Church, now located at Benton and Tampa.

George was prosperous and well respected in the community. By 1920, he owned four houses in the 700 block of North Sherman Street. The family lost all of those houses, except the original home place at 723 N. Sherman, when the FHA came into existence; there was confusion regarding proof of payment and no receipts could be found. George and Eliza had nine children; Lou, Stella, Effie, Orthro, Jess, Margie, Thomas, Ora and Roy.

Dear Roxy,
We had a wonder family historian, Lucille Headlee Chrisman, who lived to be 101. This information is from her research. Much of her info was from her grandfather Lucus Bedell.
"Belonged to Marina Wallis and David Hudson Bedell:
Leanah b. later part of 1818 (probably North Carolina, Berke or Iredell Co) came to Mo with white Bedells in 1834.
Julia Ann b. 1/26/1839 (some other info I have is that Julia was sent to family in Texas
Betsey Lucretia b. 2/5/1841
Nathan Green b. 1/12/1843
Logan Henderson Bedell b. 2/9/1845
James (Jim)Monroe Bedell b. 11/19/1846
William Hiram (Hi)Bedell b. 4/16/1849
Milla (Millie) Narcissa b. 3/8/1851
Eliza Catherine Bedell b. 4/22/1853 m. Crittenden
Enos Hildon Bedell b. 3/30/1886 (son of Millie)

They have many descendants are are honorable.Lucus Bedell's aunt Matilda Wallis "Polly" took them to north Arknasas (Fayetteville?) during the Civil War. Bedells and Wallises helped them after the war. Lucille was told: "One Logan served in Federal Army, later buried at National Cemetery, moved to Hazlewood cemetery at request of his family.
Enos said: "We were raised by Good folks. We taught our children manners."
There is another contact I can send you directly. There are many honorable Bedells in both our families.
Margaret

Does anyone know anything about Peter Bedell d. 1907, age 27, buried in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Bradford Co., PA? He's in a plot owned by Albert Graham, along with Albert's parents, his wife Martha, his wife's parents (Charles and Jane [Dickson or Dixon] Decker), and his wife's sister and her husband. The family was from Wyoming County, just across the line from Newton Township, Lackawanna Co.
Thanks Patricia, appreciate the info! I hadn't known anything about the Bedell Academy in Waco (nor could I quickly at first blush find any references to it). I've read that many Southern-State families migrated to Texas in the late 1860s and early 1870's due to the ravages/hardships of the post-Civil war reconstruction period. Best I can tell is that she/her-Wilburn family, left Georgia and arrived there in 1872-1874 or so. (She's in Hill County, Texas for the 1880 census.)

Now curious about the brother Absolom you mention because didn't see that name on the 1850 Macon, Alabama, census that Ruth is on. Is his name shown there as Isaac, by any chance?

Am working my way back to addressing Micajah in more detail (sorta' new to this genealogy stuff), so look forward to taking you up on sharing Micajah lineage soon and will certainly let you know as soon as I find out more. Thanks again -- Tyler

George Washington Bedell family of Knox, Indiana

I am looking for information on my g-g-grand uncle George Washington Bedell.

He was born 11 Aug 1876 and died 3 Sept 1930 both in Knox County, Indiana. He is the son of Clayborn Bedell (1825-1901) and his second wife, Felissa Lagrange.

I believe George married Rose (Rosa?) McCormick, who died 23 Oct 1907. From what I can gather from the census records and spotty death records, they had at least two daughters who lived with George in 1920, and possibly a son and daughter who died in infancy or as young children.

Any information on George and/or his descendants would be appreciated.

Re: Ann Martin Bedell of Georgia/Alabama

The more I look at this the more I believe she is the daughter of Abner Bedell mentioned in his will as "Nancy". Following is his will:
JONES COUNTY GA WB A. LDS film no. 4454232; Wills Vol A (1809-1864); Atlanta Archives: Roll 75-65, 1809-1851, Books A, B, C (part) indexed

BEDELL, Abner 1-?-1814 "this day in January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & fourteen" Dec 5, 1814 *a mistake of some sort but recording is very clear) Wife: Rhoda (negroes Ned and Linda) Children: Son, Absalom (Negroes Sam and Lettuce) Son, Charles (Negroes Jess & Amy) Daughter, Nancy (Negroes Forda and Moses) Daughter, Polly Bedell (Negroes Stephen, Ellick & Liza) Daughter, Betsy Smith (equal part of estate "coming to me of Mr. Charles Smith, dec'd of Green Co)
Exec: Brother, John Bedell, Peter Wyche
Wit: ELISHA TARVER, Wm Langham, Gresselld Mobley
*********
"Nancy" was often a nickname for Ann, "Polly" for Mary, and "Betsy" for Elizabeth. Elizabeth Jackson Bedell Smith was married to Joel Terrell Smith and Charles Smith was his grandfather.
The names of Ann Martin Bedell's children William, Abner, and Charles lead me to think this could be Abner's daughter "Nancy". "Nancy" as Abner's daughter had brothers, William and Charles also, and of course her father's name was Abner. Joel Terrell Smith and Elizabeth Jackson Bedell also had a daughter named Ann "Nancy" Smith.
I have another guess who Polly might have been...Mary Bedell Hilliard, but really have not gotten as close to possibly prove that.

I am descended from Micajah Bedell by way of Ruth's brother, Absolom, who settled in Collin County, TX. I don't have any more on Ruth than what you have, but I do know that their mother, Ann "Nancy" is buried somewhere around Hillsboro, TX...Ruth living there might explain why she was there...I think I'm learning more from you than I'm giving...I also think there was at one time a Bedell Academy in Waco, but I don't know where I got this info...when I first started my genealogy, I didn't always note the source (bad mistake). If you want more of Micajah's lineage, I am more than happy to share...wish I could have been of more help...if you do find Ruth, please notify me...maybe then I can find out exactly where Ann "Nancy" is buried.

If you go to the bottom of this page there is a place with "Visit Other Generations Network sites"...click on it and on the right side there is a MyFamily.Com site to click on...go there...there should be 3 Bedell site listed...go to the last one...the original...I have listed everything I have about this family, along with photos, etc...I think there is even a picture of Micajah's tombstone there...
The academey in Waco...I know, I can't find it again either...I had a major computer crash a couple of years ago and lost a ton of info...and I can't find where I got that info anymore either...it may even have been Hillsboro...I have so much info it's almost like having none at all...trying to find it is the problem...that's why I tried to put it on the MyFamily site, at least it was in order and couldn't get lost in piles of papers....good luck, and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Bedell family dates in the 1700's 1800's

I am having a great deal of difficulty with the history that keeps showing up re James Bedell born 1710 died 1753 and his wife Mary Baldwin died 22 Sep 1753 Hempstead, Long Island, New York, USA. I continue to find them having three children after they were both dead, James born 1754, Sarah born 1797 and John born 1805.

If we decide that James and Mary did not die, that would still mean that Mary had to have given birth to John at the age of over 75 years. I realize that with the absence of birth control, women did have children at a more advanced age in that era, but do we really believe she would be fertile at that age?

They also had a son Isaac in 1750. Isaac married Sarah Palmer born in 1752. One of their children supposedly was a girl named Mary. Any records I find show her death in 1901. The date of her birth is sometimes shown as 1818, which would have her born when her mother was age 66, or 1785 which would mean she lived to 116. I find that more believable than being born when her mum was 66, but would like to see a picture of the tombstone or some other documentation that would show a 116 year old individual in 1901.

Can anyone substantiate or give clarification to any of the dates being displayed?

I am a descendant of David Bedell of the Springfield Missouri Bedells. He was a Revolutionary War Veteran and is buried just north of Springfield in a cemetery which is now on private property. There are also slaves buried in that cemetery. Is this your first contact with this family? I will forward your inquiry to two others from our family.

Kitty Pierce a genealogist in Lindley NY, sent me information on Elizabeth Ansley, mother of Cornelius Vanderbilt, which was part of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record Vol 127 #4 Oct 1996. There are 5 pages. It mentions Joseph Mersereau and Sara Bedell, johnson, Bush,Lake,Van Pelt,Ansley,Simonson, and others, which you will find of interest.
I have an interest in the Mersereau Family. Did you ever find out who were the parents of Joseph Mersereau? There were very few Mersereau's with connections to the Moravian Church. I have a hunch that Joseph was the son of Joshua Mersereau b 1741 m 7/16/1767 ( NY marriage records) Mary Lake bapt 5/11/1735 daughter of Joseph Lake. Joshua and Mary's son Stephen b 5/4/1770 bapt 4/17/1770 was named after Joshua Mersereau's father Stephen b 1703 StatenIsland. It makes sense that another son would be named after Mary (Lake) father Joseph. However no proof...no cigar.
If you give me your address, I will sent Charlotte Megill's Oct 1996 record.
Rae Graham
