Hi Nick:
I have a copy of it and will be happy to send you that. The problem with it is that it doesn't have Lydia listed as a Bedford. Here is what I know William Wiseman and Lydia Bedford first Born was Bedford Wiseman. Who is my GGG Grandfather. The Family Historian Thomas Chapman from California Has written several Books on the family. We spoke many times on the phone several years ago as to what our thoughts were on the Bedford/Wiseman union. Tom if he is still living would be in his 90's now. He collected all the oral history of the people from the mountains for the last 60 years. Lydia is most definitely a Bedford, but unfortunately we have no documentation. Just hearsay... Our hope is to put those stories out and see if anyone might come out with some form of documentation placing our Lydia in the Bedford family. This is what we know for sure. She is definitely not Mercy and Jonas's daughter. We think she might be their grand daughter. Our theory is that she very well might be the daughter of Jonas Jr and Mary Ann McKinney. I have done years of research with the Bedford family(Luetta Kirker). The only children that they could not find was MaryAnn and Jonas Jr. Children... The president of the Georgia Genealogy Assoc.(I can't remember his name off hand but I can get it to you if you can give me some time) He is a decendent of Raymond Bedford Son of Jonas and Mercy. We both agree that there is no way Lydia was the daughter of Mercy and Jonas. In all the deeds and wills there is never once mentioned Lydia. We think that Lydia came from Tennessee because the family stories state that she would travel alone by horse to the visit her family. Tom had thought that it was to Rutherford N.C. but has later thought it could have possible been Tennesse. We did find Jonas Jr and Mary Ann Mckinney a town west of Ashville in Tennesse in a Cencus. Jonas Jr and Maryann later moved north-westward to Obion County Tennessee. Where Jonas Jr held a official title in the County. When Lydia was a teenager she came to the mountains to help a family friend Sam Bright who was a friend of Jonas Sr and Mercy Bedford they traveled the trail From New Jersey to NC. Sam had a homestead in Avery County NC.Northwest of Ashville. He would use a Indian trail to take people from Rutherford NC to Tennesse and would lodge in Avery County over night and continue on to Tennesse. Sam Brights wife who lived at the lodge in Avery County and became ill. While Sam continued guide people back and forth to Tennessee and Rutherford.Lydia was sent by the family to help her with chores. We think she might have been about 16 years old or there about. William Wiseman owned property next to Sam Bright lodge and Lydia and William (This is how William Wiseman and Lydia met) Lydia was trying to move the cows from one field to the other. William was a widower and much older than Lydia and had is teenage sons help her. The other thing we know is that Avery County is full of McKinney's and Most of William and Lydia children have first names from the McKinney Side. The McKinney's also traveled in the same clan as the Bedfords and Brights Via Newark New Jersey to Avery County NC.. Lydia was a known Redhead (hearsay) which was found in the McKinney Family. We have no gravesite for Lydia. If we did we could have DNA test done on the Mtdna so our next step would be to find a direct female decendant of Lydia that we could test to find a link on the McKinney side. But that still wont get us the documentation we need to get into the Travis/ Mayflower Assoc. Nick unless there is some form of documentation that pops up from someones attic it will have to remain a unsolved and Our family will not be excepted in the the Mayflower Assoc. If you have any information that may help me connect with this I would greatly appreciate it... I'm not looking to write a book only help solve this on going mystery. There is alot of information from Tom's Book that people have taken as the word. But Tom told me that when he wrote the book 50 years ago it was at the very beginning of his research, and had he know that people were going to take it as word that Lydia was the daughter of Mercy he would have worded it differently. Last we spoke we both agree that Lydia was not the daughter of Mercy and Jonas Bedford but possible a grand daughter from Jonas Jr and MaryAnn McKinney. Now it just a matter of putting it out there and see if something pops up. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer than that. Please feel free to contact me at my email which is wbolil@cfl.rr.com. I have all the copies of Jonas and Mercy's Will and deeds and Some documentation of Jonas Jr. If you would like them I will be happy to scan them and send them to you just forward me you email.Or better yet Luetta Kirker has a wonderful website on Bedford Family. Myfamily.com I has all the documentation needed to download for the Bedford family linkage to the Mayflower and then some. She and Tom Chapman have been such a gift to our families. So nice to hear from a fellow family researcher.
Regard, Pam Vance-Bolil

Hello pam,

i'm the SC Mayflower Historian, and am working with an applicant to offer some kind of proof as to Lydia being the daughter of Jonas & Mercy Bedford. You mentioned that your family has old journals that claim this to be the case. Do you have these journals in your possession, and if so, would it be possible to get copies? I look forward to hearing from you.

All Best,

Nick Maher
36 Partridge Circle
Beaufort, SC 29907

37ford@earthlink.net
843 522 8878

Thanks for your information. I have several William Bedford's but cannot relate to one of them being married to an Elizabeth. However, to resolve any differences maybe if you send me more definite information I can then further look into it. Send to cowper1944 hotmail com.

Regards

Jonathan Bedford

I am researching Jonathan Bedford born 1777 m.Sally/Sarah Peters 1802 Dutchess Co.,NY. I can not prove who his parents are: Stephen and Naomi Bedford or David and Esther Smith Bedford. Jonathan had a son Stephen A. m Malissa Passmore, they had 9 children: William, Osborn,Hannah,Sarah,Griffin, Caroline,Jane, Alexander and George. I would appreciate any clues as to who were Jonathans parents. Thanks, Carol

FYI I just wanted to let you all know that I found out why Andrew Marshall King wasn't responding to our messages.
On September 11, 2001 He was killed in the Twin Towers in New York City, I wanted so much to talk with him about the Bedfords as he had so much information on the family. So even today the great loss of September 11th is still being felt with the Loss of Andrew Marshall King age (42). Regretfully with a very heavy heart
Pamela Vance- Bolil 8/13/2008
Hi Andy,Yes am still researching all those names and Thomas B and Jane W are my grt grandparents..their daughter Agnes Binks being my grandmother and her son Dudley my father...all long gone.I have an old family photo of Martha Bedford (wife of John woollin)b1794 died 1888 aged 96 and her marriage certs to J Woollin and later George Roberts...also bits on the Milnes,Scotts, but not a great deal on the Binks...perhaps we can share what we have. There are also 3 or 4 other Bedford researchers and John & I correspond regularly...also Sarah Pearson. I can send some family descendant lines if you are interested...kind regards Brian..at bdapp@bigpond.com

Thank you for your message. A 3 year wait for a reply has been worth it. I do'nt know how much you know about the How's. I have a tree posted on Genes Reunited plus I have certificates. Walter Dxon How and Lna Whitemiller were my Grandparents They went to South Africa in 1925 ad my Father Herbert Dixon went to South Africa te previous year. My Uncle was Archibald Walter Dixon married to Helen leutchford. They had 1 daughter Veronica born 1937. My Fater married Hermine Bunge. My siser Victoria (Mary) born 1943 married Terence Hobson and they had a son and daughter. their son Curt Dixon born 1969 died tragically in 1993. Their daughter Heidi Maxine born 1974 is married to Grant Shuttleworth and they have 2 sons Jake Dixon born in 2003 and Ethan Thomas born in 2008. They all live in South Africa. I was born in 1947 and ever marrried. In 2001 I came to the UK. Two other branches of the How's went to Australia - Helen How and Archibald Steven. They went to Sydney, Adelaid and Perth/Freemantle. I am in contact with descendants of Helen, Archibald and Gertrude. There were 13 children in all. They only ones I have hit a blank wll with are Alfred Dixon and Horace Dxon.
Re: Jonathan Bedford

Hi! We are related only by several cousins/removed whatever, so I do not have all the information to fill in for you, but I do have a Bedford genealogy list compiled by Luetta Bedford Kirker, the guru for Bedford genealogy, that includes a notation for David Bedford m. Esther Hetty Smith. Do you have this, by chance? I can't remember how I came into possession of it. It must be on Rootsweb or something. Anyway, I'll copy out below the stuff on David and Esther, even though it does not indicate any son named Jonathan. It goes back three more generations older than David, too, by the way. I do not have any information on a Stephen Bedford married to a Naomi. Sorry.

Here's the David and Esther information:

David Bedford was born October 7, 1767, and died March 20, 1813 in Albany, Albany Co., NY. He married Esther Hetty Smith May 16, 1793. She was born June 15, 1771 in New York, New York, and died August 7, 1839 in Norwich, Chenango Co., NY.

Notes for David Bedford: [Elias Smith's Letterbook Oct 1799 - Oct 1800 (Baker Library, Harvard) Mss: transcribed and annotated by Suzanne A. Jackson]
Letters show that David Bedford is a merchant of Albany trading with Upper Canada. That he traveled to York (Toronto) at least once. A Capt. Joseph Allan of Upper Canada owes David Bedford at least $800! Letter dated March 10, 1800 from Montreal "I hope you got paid for your Two Voyages to York, I hear the poor fellow is to be hung for the forgery of the note against you."

The first hanging in York (not Toronto) was that of Humphrey Sullivan who was "convicted on Monday the 20th of January last (1800) at a Session of the Oyer and terminer held at York for the Home District, of uttering a forged promissory Note, purporting to be the promissory Note of David Bedford, for the sum of 250 dollars" [National Archives of Canada, Ottawa "Civil Secretary's Correspondence, Upper Canada, Upper Canada Sundries, 1791-1800 RG5, A1, Vol 1A pp. 41-566"]

Letter dated March 10, 1800 from Montreal: "Your mother and all the family joines me in our best Love to you Hetty and the Dear Little Children as well. Your Father and Mother and all your brothers and sisters and all friends" Sounds as David Bedford family is still living and is in the area

Letter dated March 18, 1800: "I will want a few articles from New York. Must beg the favor of you to get when you go down to New York for your goods in the Spring."

Children of David Bedford and Esther Smith are:
Catherine Bedford b. 1794
Nancy Bedford b, 1797
David Elias Smith Bedford b, 1799

There are dates and birth places and marriage info for those three children as well, but since this doesn't look like your branch I'm not taking the time to write it all out.

Wish I could have filled in your lineage. Good luck pursuing other leads!
Wendy

Luetta is older and not doing as much genealogy as she once did. The last email address I have for her is a couple years old, but maybe it will still work. Try LuBKirker@sbcglobal.net -- and good luck!
Wendy

I just noted a typo in my message sent last night. It should read: York is "now Toronto". My error was "not" Toronto. Sorry.
Wendy
