My greatgrand mother was Steven Bedgoods daughter, she lived in Goldonna La. My mother and one of her sisters also were born in Goldonna. Annie Bedgood, my great grandmother married James Isom Conley in April 1911. This has to be the same family. Goldonna is not that big, I know I grew up there part of my life.

As part of my One Name Study of BEDGOODs and variants I have about 14 BEDGOODs and 25 BEDGGOODs born in Wales.

I would be happy to search for specific individuals if I am contacted off list.

On the question of origin. The Welsh BEDGOODs and BEDGGOODs appear to have originated in the West Country of England, usually from Gloucestershire and Devon. The move started around 1800 and continued as more people were forced to seek work in the expanding cities, as jobs became scarce in the rural communities. Some moved further afield to North America, Australia and New Zealand.

The surname of Bidgood/Bedgood is of English origin. The early Bidgood's of Isle Of Wight County, Virginia came from England. Some of the Bidgood family lines of colonial Virginia kept the Bidgood spelling but others branches became Bedgood.

I had a crest/coat of arms done with that name (which is also my family name) while I was living in Europe - it's very lovely and very interesting - however, be forewarned - the fact that Harrads can do a little geneology for you - they are careful to mention that just because there is one connected with this name, it by no means you have any claim to the "peerage" that goes with it if, indeed, there is any left...but it looks great hanging on our wal! As for the name - there are other spellings and generally it is a 'clerical' name - Welsh and or English, maybe both.

Who knows, maybe we are related.

Elle

How interesting - My biological father was a Raymond James Bedgood from the Savannah area of GA in the USA - old city and old family. While I was working in Europe I had a crest and family name look-up while in the UK. I was told that the Name was Welsh AND/OR English - they gave the same list of possible early spellings you did. I have always been told that our early family came from Wales. I'd be glad to hear anything about the name and what ever you know about any history connected with the name of any spelling.

Thanks, Elle
