Don, I spoke to you many many years ago about the Bedingfield family. I am a Bedingfield from Laurens County, GA and am descended from the Wake and Johnston Counties, NC line. Do you have any info on those Bedingfields, especially Henry Bedingfield.
I don't think so. I will have to find my original search records. After beginning my search, I hooked into the records of an Agnes Bedingfield who somehow got into the Latter Day Saints genealogy records and led me back to 1066 and the progenitor of the Bedingfield line, whose name became Roger Bedingfield. I recall seeing that name but I don't think I carried it forward and I don't remember if it was a wife of Edmund after Margaret. Do you have any other records of the Bedingfields/Benefields you would be willing to share? Sorry I can't be of more help. I just had neck surgery and won't be able to get to my search records for at least 2 weeks.

Edmund did not build Oxburgh Hall. He inherited it through his wife, Margaret Tutenham Bedingfield, when her brother was beheaded for treason. Women could not inherit property, so the husband got the Hall. He was granted permission to crennelate it (build cannon "holes" and moat). Check the Bedingfield/Benefield GenForum for more information about England's Bedingfields. Also, check site for Oxburgh Hall on the internet.

I was wondering if anyone had any information about Thomas Bedingfield (B: 1428 in England D: 1453 in England). He was married to Anne Waldegrave (de Waldegrave) about 1448. They had some children, one of which is Edmund who built Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk. Thomas was married a 2nd time to Joan Busard and had children, of which I am a descendent I believe. I cannot find any records of the 2nd marriage, but SEVERAL family trees has it like I explained. Only problem is that the marriage date to Joan Busard is 1482, almost 30 years AFTER the supposed groom's death. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

By the time they reached Oklahoma they were known as Bennefield. Her gr-grandmother was Sarah Adeline Bennefield who just passed away a few months back. Her parents were William Henry Baily Bennefield and Mollie Smith. William's parents were James H. Bennefield and Mary Ann George. James' father was James K. Bennefield. J.K.'s parents were William Needham Bedingfield and Mary Rogers. William Needham was Jr. so his father was William Needham as well. And his father was a William Bedingfield who died 1774 Wake Co. NC.

Needham Jr. moved from NC to GA and was a part of the Cherokee Land Lottery. He ends up in Alabama. This is a very big family lots of people have trees descending from the early Bedingfields of NC. Most have conflicting info so that I am not sure where this William d. 1774 comes from, I wonder if he came from England or Virginia. He supposedly married Susannah Bradley in 1738 but I haven't seen reference to the record for this. Not sure who Needham Sr. married.

Hi, I am researching this family for my best friend, whose great-grandma was a Bennefield from Oklahoma.

I am looking at all the trees online and trying to make heads or tails of these early Bedingfields in North Carolina.

Most trees say that William Bedingfield who died 1774 is the son of William Bedingfield and Elizabeth Yelverton. Also these trees have that William d. 1774 was born 1710/1713. And these same trees have Elizabeth d. 1694.

Tell me is there any serious research with some solid evidence on this lineage beyond this William d. 1774? Does anyone know where the evidence is for William's marriage to Susannah Bradley in 1738?

My grandfather was Auburn Faith (Bill) Benefield born 10-14-1903. Two of his brothers name Gus and Roy. The story he told was that he was from Gwinnett County Ga. and I think his fathers name was John Benefield and maybe his mother's maiden name was rutledge (not sure). He said his father and a younger brother was murdered somewhere around Lawrencevill Ga. I think his brother Roy used the name Bedingfield.
If this information rings a bell to anyone I would like to here the story about my great grandfather's murder. Thanks

I believe his parents to be Needham and Mary (Rogers) Benefield, but have yet to find solid proof. I have found a clue, I think. There are a Needham and Polly Benefield in the 1850 Barbour, Alabama, District 11 census - both indicating birthplaces of NC, and with about "right" ages - 71, and 70. Can anyone give me guidance? Thank you so much!

This is a picture of a Beddingfield Coat of Arms that came with a certificate my parents had framed in their home. According to the certificate, the shield was drawn drawn by a heraldic artist from information officially recorded in ancient heraldic archives found in Burke's General Armory.

When translated, the Arms description is:

"Ermine; a red eagle displayed."

Above the shield and helmet is the Crest which is described as:

"A unicorn's head erased sa. the horn wreathed or and air."

A translation of the Crest description is:
"A black unicorn's head, jagged, the horn wreathed gold and silver."

Family mottos are believed to have originated as battle cries in medieval times. A Motto was not recorded with the Beddingfield Coat of Arms.

Hello Gord Bedingfield,
I don't have a Bedingfield coat of arms (hope your search was successful, though) but am replying to your post on the off-chance we might be from the same branch of the Bedingfield tree. I've been able to trace my descent, on my father's side, from one John Bedingfield (c. 1690 - 1736/37) and his wife, Elizabeth Reeve who were married in 1714, in Suffolk, England. My father was born in Yorkshire, England in 1905 and came to Canada as a young child, with his family, in 1911. If this sounds like it might be your branch, I'd like to hear from you.
Kathy, from Victoria, B.C.

William Clifford Bedingfield was my great-grandfather and I can tell you anything you need to know about him. I even have a picture of him. Most of my information is on another computer but I can tell you that his parents were William Henry Bedingfield and Josephine Odum. He married Georgia Carlese Cheney in Bibb county (don't have the date) and they had two sons, John Cheney Bedingfield and William Henry Bedingfield (my grandfather). William Clifford Bedingfield died in the hospital after his appendix burst. If you'd like specifics as far as dates and what-not, feel free to email me at janiejunk17 at yahoo dot com (removing the spaces and using @ and . in place of at and dot respectively).

Janie Bedingfield

Family of Charles C. Beddingfield

I am trying to tie up a few loose ends on my Beddingfield-Collier tree. I want to put my research on line to share with others.
One loose end is the grand-daughter living with Charles C. & Mary Jane Beddingfield:
US Census 1860 MS Clarke County, Atinnisa 3yo F
US Census 1870 MS Lauderdale County, Mary A. 12yo F
Us Census 1880 MS Lauderdale County, Artamissa 22yo F grandaughter
This appears to be the same person.
Which of CC's sons is her father? William, Charles or John Jefferson.
I believe the most likely candidate is Charles with his first wife Margaret Carr since she died 24 Dec 1859 (per her tombstone in the Bucatunna Cemetery). Ancestry.com has a marriage record for Charles and Margaret on 06 Jan 1859. These random records are not always accurate, I would like to see the county ledger. If they were married a year earlier the dates would fit perfectly. Does anyone have data to refute or back up my theory? Both William and JJ each had one wife who outlived them. Charles married Martha in 1860 and Frances Lassiter in 1877.
Also I have no data on two daughters of CC & Mary Jane: Mary J. (born abt 1831) and Fereba (born abt 1840). Can anyone help?
I am descended from CC's oldest daughter, Matilda and William T Collier.
June in Mississippi
Bedingfields of Conecuh County AL

I have seen a much quoted Sam Beddingfield post of Sam (1775), the father, with children John Jefferson (1794), Wyatt Harmon (1796), Will (1798) and CC. Have any of you ever found any data to back this up? It seems to be a different family from mine.
In my tree I have Charles C. Beddingfield (1806-1880), Samuel D. (abt 1819-1869) which seem to be brothers, Wyatt Harmon (1857-1922) son of Samuel D.; William (1828-died before 1880) son of CC, and John Jefferson (1839-1898) son of CC. JJ also has a grandson and g-grandson named John Jefferson.
I believe the father of CC and Sam to be George Beddingfield of Conecuh County, AL. It is possible George and CC are brothers but I am more inclined to believe the father-son relationship. I derived this from matching the persons (sex and age) on the 1830 and 1840 census ( households of Charles C. and George) with known persons (census 1850-1880). The families match except for the 1840 age for head of household. They are listed there as Bennefield. It appears George had 4 sons CC, Henry, Sam and John and one daughter (name unknown).
Do any of you have any thoughts on my theory? .
Also, I don't have any data on CC's daughters Mary J. (b abt 1831) and Fereba b. abt 1840). Do you?
June in Mississippi
CC Beddingfield>Matilda+ William T. Collier> George T.
Agnes Bedingfield+Christopher Browne

Hi, Bedingfield Reseachers,
I descend from the couple Agnes Bedingfield and Christopher Browne who were living at the end of the 1400s and into the early 1500s in and around Norfolk/Suffolk, England. Their descendant John Browne immigrated to Watertown, MA, Sept. 16, 1632, aboard the "Lion." I have found this couple on the family trees at RootsWeb/Ancestry.com, at LDS and Genealogy.com, and at individual families' genealogy sites. However, I can find no site that quotes records or proofs as to dates, marriage, children, or Agnes's ancestry, etc. In fact, Agnes's birthdates are all over the 15th century, from 1450 to 1500. While I am not disputing Savage's "Genealogical Dictionary..." and everyone else that Agnes was a Bedingfield, I would like to know upon what basis the Bedingfield descendants claim her ancestry and data. I figure someone, somewhere knows the story of this couple. Can any of you Bedingfield researchers fill me in?? Many thanks and best regards, Melody

I am searching for his father. He was born in 1821 or 1822 in NC. He is my g g grandfather. His granddaughter, my great aunt Maude Bedingfield Scott had said that his father's name was John and that he and a twin brother Joe came over from England. I realize many people claim that the father of John Davis is Nathaniel, but there has never been any proof offered on that and Aunt Maude never agreed with it. Until I see documentation, I will continue to search for a John and Joe Bedingfield. I would guess that Joe is short for Joseph as Joe is not that common in those days. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Paul

Bedingfield in Johnston, NC 1700s

Researching a Bedingfield who appeared in court with bond for Michael Condry in Johnston, NC in late 1700s. Michael had fingers lost and was old and could not work. He was looking to be excused from taxes. Trying to find connection to Bedingfield family and Condry family. I think that he could have been a son in law or minister? Anyone have anything on this info. Best Rawleigh

Re: James J. Beddingfield's burial location

I show this James J. Beddingfield/Bedingfield as being married to Mary Ann Kilgore (as listed in the 1850 & 1860 census reports). I descended from his brother, Solomon E. L. Bedingfield and Susan Hosch - Solomon's second wife was a Frances Ridgeway. Unfortunately, I do not know which cemetery James is buried in. Your best best is to post a message to both the Gwinnett County and Barrow County message boards and see if someone will do a cemetery lookup for you. If you descended from James J. Beddingfield, I would love to share info.

Thanks,
Janie
