I recently heard a professional genealogist say that the first thing you need to know about genealogy research is how to misspell your ancestors' names.

1870 Battle Creek, Calhoun, MI

Rufus Barns 71
Mary 53
Bun 20
Abell 16
Spencer 14
Hartley 11

I didn't find Rufus or Mary after 1870.
Hope this is helpful.

Can you give us some information on the person you want the report to be on. Names, places, dates are the three things most important. Also, it needs to be on someone named Beers because that is the name of this message board. That way we can help you.

One thing you need to know about posting on the message boards. You are not allowed to post any information on any living person without their permission.

Good luck on your report.

Thanks so much for your response. I think these are the people I am looking for. Since my posting, I have found census records for my Beers' that show Frank's wife as "Alice"; the first one I found was 1920. I have concluded that she must have gone by her middle name of Alice.

If so, she was a sister to my great-grandmother, who had made a handwritten list of all her brothers and sisters, which included their full names, nicknames, birth dates, spouses names, and also the names, birth dates, marriage date, and death dates of their parents. She had listed her youngest sibling as "Christina Alice", nicknamed "Teenie", who was married to Frank D. Beers.

God Bless Her . . by doing that, she saved me tons of time doing research.

I would appreciate anything you have and are willing to share. You may email me directly.

Obituary for Thomas Brooks Beers

OBITUARY
June 16, 1904 "Emporia Gazette"
Emporia, Kansas
Thomas Beers died this morning at 2 o'clock at the family home of West Fifth Avenue after a long illness. Mr. Beers was born in 1834 in Connecticut and moved to Illinois where he enlisted for three years in a regiment that went out of Chicago in the Civil War. At the end of the three years, he reenlisted and served throughout the war in the Seventh Illinois and the Thirteenth Missouri. He was married to Mary McColloch in 1868 in Monticello, Indiana. They came to Emporia in 1869 where they had lived ever since with the exception of one year that they lived in Independence. Mr. Beers could tell many interesting bits about early Lyon County history. He was undersheriff for two terms, in 1874 and again in 1882, and lived in the old courthouse. One of his sons, Will Beers, was born there. The news of the tearing down of the old courthouse affected his strongly. Mr. Beers also put up the fountain on the courthouse lawn. At Independence, Mr. Beers was deputized as an officer in the hunt for the famous Benders and arrested the people who were supposed to be that gang, but who were afterward released on a writ of habeas corpus. Mr. Beer's health had been bad for years and for the past four months, he had been almost helpless. A stroke of paralysis, with heart and stomach trouble, finally became too much for his enfeebled constitution, and his passing was as a child falling asleep. During the years that he had been unable to lead an active life, his garden and lawn occupied much of his time and his neighbors on West Fifth have missed his welcoming greeting this summer. His greatest pride was in his children, all of whom are upright men and women who never have failed in honoring their parents. Mrs. Beers had been her husband's faithful and untiring nurse and his appreciation was daily shown. One son, Lovett Beers, left here last Saturday after a two week visit. His home is in New York City. Will Beers lives in Emporia as do also the daughters, Gussie McCord, Nannie Beers, and Zilla Beers. The family has the sympathy of a great many friends. One son by a former marriage, Charles Beers, lives in El Reno, Oklahoma. He has been telegraphed and may be here for the funeral. The funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the home and will be conducted by Rev. S. C. Kerr. The interment will be made in Maplewood Cemetery.

Alex Roller
aroller@opusnet.com

Re: Death in CA- Family of Dr. George W. BEERS - NY to CA

Sacramento Daily Union
Saturday, July 4, 1863

THE WHOLESALE MURDER AT SAN FRANCISCO - A dispatch to the Bee has the following particulars in reference to the family murder mentioned in the Union yesterday:
Last evening at eight oíclock, a discovery was made which thrilled with horror all who witnessed it. Dr. George W. BEERS, the well-known lecturer, his wife Julia, and his daughter Annie, were found dead. The scene of these unparalleled tragedies is in the lodging house of Mrs. BARNES, on the corner of Geary and Stockton streets. Neither of the parties had been seen during the day, and not a sound heard in their rooms by any member of the family or lodger in the house. A light was observed in an outhouse. Dr. BEERS has been in extremely reduced circumstances, having been unable to pay his board.
Latterly, he has been delivering lectures, and was to have appeared at Dashaway Hall in a series on Physical Life. The last lecture was so thinly attended that he became dispirited, and for a day or two has kept his room, where he was heard pacing about in a restless manner about 11 oíclock on Wednesday evening.
Mrs. BARNES failing to receive any reply to her repeated knockings informed her husband, who burst open the door, revealing the horrible scene.
On the bed lay the dead bodies of Dr. BEERS and his wife, the head of the man hanging over one side of the bed and directly over a pad which had been carefully placed to receive the blood, while the wife lay with her head near the foot of the bed and suspended over in a similar manner to bleed into a vessel placed there for the purpose. The sheets and bed covering were drenched with gore, and the bodies attenuated from loss of blood. In an adjoining room lay the dead body of their child, her mouth covered with froth and the face convulsed as with the effects of poison. Close by was found a vial which had contained strychnine, but its contents had been emptied into a tumbler. A small lancet with bloody blade, and a bar of iron weighing some eight pounds, was also found, spotted with blood and matted with hair. The following letters throw some light over this before mysterious affair. They were discovered on the bureau:
Mr. and Mrs. BARNES, Please take charge of all our effects and sell them for your own benefit, except the portraits, which do not let out of your hands until you may have an opportunity to send them to Mrs. Julia P.
DOUGLAS, Brooklyn, New York.
I have nothing to state further than that I am feeling my wife is really to pass away from me, and difficulties are accumulating around me that I cannot withstand.
GEORGE W. BEERS
P.S. - Also keep the writing desk, and burn the letters. See that the letter under this reaches its destination.
This was a note directed to Frank TUTHILL, and reads thus:
Doctor, will you please send the inclosed to its destination, as a last act of kindness to my dear wife's mother.
I take your daughter with me, rather than have her die by inches as her father died before my eyes. Pardon the act, for we have suffered much for each otherís sake.
G.W. BEERS
The murderer evidently had a preconcerted plan with his wife for taking their own lives and that of their child. The wife's appearance after the murder, as first seen, presented a ghastly spectacle. The forehead and face crimson with blood, and the back of her head apparently crushed. The indication about the mouth showed that the wife had swallowed poison, and probably the husband, seeing her in agony, completed the deed by a blow on the head with the iron bar. The head of the man hung near the rim of the pad. He had severed an artery in the palm of his right hand and bled to death. The most touching sight was that of the daughter. The face looked somewhat distorted, and from her mouth oozed a thick saliva. She had been poisoned, and a heavy blow was visible on the back of her head, which doubtless was inflicted by the same weapon used in dispatching the wife.
The Coroner on his arrival made a hasty examination, swore in a jury on the spot, and announced the inquest to be held at one oíclock this afternoon. The doctor and wife were about thirty-seven years of age and natives of Brooklyn, New York.

I am a direct male descendant of Jabez Beers of Morris county, New Jersey (1722-1777). In Mrs. Regan's Beers genealogy this line has been designated as part of the New Jersey Beers (Vol VII). I have had my paternal DNA typed and have created a DNA group at ancestry.com. I would love any other Beers to compare DNA with.
Mrs. Regan (and others) could never definitely state whose Jabez's father was, although she suggested it might be Nathan Beers of Fairfield, CT. Closest match so far is 9 generations, but no response from the match. I would really love to prove Jabez line connection to the main Beers line.
Thanks,

Narcissa Beers of Syracuse, NY

I'm trying to find out anything on the Narcissa Beers who ran a boarding house in Syracuse, NY at least between 1850 and 1860. From census records of 1850-1860, she was born in Connecticut ca. 1792. In the 1850 record, there also appears to be an Edward Beers, born NY ca. 1814 listed right below her in the boarding house (I've not found anything further about him yet). In the NY State Census of 1855, Narcissa is also listed with three “cousins” living in the boarding house: David, Harriet and Hiram Woolsey.
I’m trying to figure out how David, Harriet and Hiram Woolsey were related to Narcissa. If anyone has access to Mary Louise Regan's books on the Beers genealogy, I would greatly appreciate some assistance to see if there are any clues about this Narcissa Beers and the cousins. David Woolsey and Harriet Wolcott Woolsey were my gr-great-grandparents, and Hiram Woolsey was David’s younger brother. I’m guessing the relationship was on the Woolsey side since Hiram was also listed as a cousin, but that is only a guess.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Charlie Black
Helen Beers of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania

i am looking for a woman named Helen Beers who lived in Mountain Top in the early 70's for sure. Beers must have been her maiden name, but she came to my grandfather, Harold Beers' funeral in Lehighton in 1971. We never heard about her previous to this, and never heard from her again after this. Does anyone out there have any info on this person? Thanks - Wendy Beers Henderson

Trying to find information on the death of my great grandmother, Catherine Snyder Beers. According to her headstone she died January 12,1916. She lived almost all of her life in Walnutport, PA. My great grandfathers name was Josiah/Isaiah, and thats who Catherines husband was. I checked the Easton Library and its not in there. I sent for her death cert with both Northampton Archives and Vital records, who have nothing. Now it seems like a mystery. She is buried in Berlinsville Cemetery. thanks - Wendy

Hi Luann,

Thank you for the reply to my posting.

I am not related to Jacob Beers, Sr. I am researching the 28th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company E, in which Jacob Sr. and Jr. served as Corporals.

I would appreciate any and all information that you might share. I do have some information about both men, and I am certainly willing to share what I have.

Please contact me by my e-mail address.

My thanks,

Joe

morse73@ptd.net

Thank you for the information about Jacob Beers. I now can trace him through the 1860-1880 census records through his wife and children.

Pennsylvania archived material shows Jacob's age as 42 when he enlisted; thus, a birth year of 1819. These records aren't always correct. The same card source also shows Jacob as "Sr." and the other Jacob as "Jr". Could that just be coincidence?

You mentioned a photo of Jacob in uniform. Do you have that photo? Would you share the same?

You can reach me by my e-mail address.

Thanks,

Joe
morse73@ptd.net

Am not related. May be of interest to someone who is. I have no further info but additional old Stockton Daily Independent newspaper extracts may be found on the web

Vern D
/////////////////////////////////
Transcribed by Dee Sardoc
////////////////////////////////
Stockton Daily Independent
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
******************************
>>SATURDAY, 4 JULY 1863<<

SAN FRANCISCO DISPATCH, July 3 --
-On Wednesday night Dr. George W. BEERS, residing at the corner of Stockton and Geary streets, killed his wife and daughter aged 9 years, by fracturing their skulls with an iron bar; having, it is supposed, first administered strychnine. He then took poison himself, opened an artery in his hand and bled to death. He was in straightened circumstances, and was also a firm believer in spiritualism. His circumstances and opinions are supposed to have induced the deed. Nothing was known of it until a late hour last evening, when his door was forced by the landlady.

My name is James Beers, and I was born on Beers Brook in 1943. We had a farm across from the Club Royal, or the Beers Homestead. My Father was Harland Beers, and his Father was Adelbert Beers. The Beers family moved from Fairfield, CT, and settled Beerston, NY. I stumbled across this site this morning and found it very interesting. I love hearing from anyone with any info into the Beers Clan of Beerston. I have quite a few pictures, and info on another computer, and will keep checking onto this site when I get the time to see if I can find anything new or answer some questions for those looking. My email is: seadog007@gmail.com. A lot of these names I know, and have info on. There is a Family reunion for the Beers Family that has ties to Neil/Niel/Cornelius Beers lineage on July 20, 2008 in Otego, NY.

This is fourkisses4 I meant to leave my name it is Raylene. In my rush I forgot to give you my name. I am sorry for the double posts but I reacted too fast as I was told that I was named after a family member. They thought I was going to be a boy and was suppose to be Raymond but I was a girl so Raylene was my name then. I am so sorry if this sounds terrible but it just hit so close to home that I do hope that there is a George Beers in Raymonds family. Thank You again for reading this and I am 55 yrs old. Thank You !

Esther Beers help please!!

HI!
I am a descendant of Silas Beers and Debby Ann Osborn, I am looking for proof that Esther was their child. I know she is listed in Reagan book on the Beers family, however, the DAR will not accept that book as proof. I was wondering if you , or if you knew anyone who might have the family Bible listing her birth, or know where I can find her birth record or a probate record that lists her as a child? Thanks, Kathy Graham
