Hello from Virginia. As to the earliest appearance of this family name, I have had my curiosity piqued ever since coming across the Begay surname in the Southwest US. My maiden surname is BÉGUÉ as my father was a Frenchman. In France it would have been pronounced Baygay according to the accented E letters, but here in the States people pronounced it Begay. I should point out that we emigrated in 1948 and I have no native Indian genealogy. I later learned that many shepherds from the Basque region of France came to herd sheep in the same areas of the West as the Begay name is encountered. Since the Pyrenees are where most of the Begues in France seem to have originated, could the Begay surname have possibly come down from a Basque shepherd family? I thought it was worth considering among other explanations. Sometimes an explanation for a name can live for a very long time, only to be found to be in error when, years later, new information comes to light. I have no inclination one way or another, just a curiousity kindled when I came across the name. kindest regards, B Begue
