Mary (Minnie) Beggs born abt. 1883

Looking for info on Mary Minnie Beggs born abt 1883 in Antrim. She had a child, Phoebe, born out of wedlock in Mar. 1906 in Corgy Doagh Grange. On June 22, 1906 Minnie married the father of Phoebe, Thomas McCord McCrea (born June 7, 1883) to William McCrea and Agnes Blair.

Shortly after the marriage, Thomas emigrated to Rhode Island, Minnie and Phoebe lived with his parents. The census of 1911 has Phoebe in William McCrea's home with no Minnie. We know that Minnie died before Phoebe emigrated to the US in 1929 and presume it was before 1911.

Nothing else is known about Minnie except that a Phoebe Gibson was present at the birth of Phoebe and that a James Kerr was witness at her wedding which took place at Kilbride Presbyterian Church.

Hello Vinny. I saw your name in messages concerning the McNamee family and Strabane, County Tyrone. In Sion Mills my great grandparents married in 1890's---James Hamill & Annie McNamee. James moved to Belfast after his wife died, and the daughter of James, Margaret Anne, married William John Leeburn. I found a great deal of data on the ancestors of WJ Leeburn in the records of the Carnmoney Presbyterian Church. The coincidence is that I find records in this Carnmoney church of BIGGS/BEGGS family members.

My family tree is public, so you can see the information I have on the Beggs family - quite a bit of information on John Beggs and his descendents. Hope this is helpful!

Hi,

I have James and Robert and given names throughout my Beggs line, but am not sure how my line might be related to yours and to the gravestone. Where is the gravestone located?

My gggrandfather, James Beggs, was married to Eliza Lusk Beggs. James was born about 1790 in Co. Antrim, either near Belfast or in the area of Larne. I don't know where either James or Eliza are buried, although I suspect somewhere in the Ottawa Valley.

James and Eliza had a son Robert, my ggrandfather, who married Martha Carey. Robert is buried in Midland, Ont.. Martha in Hawkesbury, Ont.

Tom Beggs

Birth of Elizabeth Ann Gribben – Oct – Dec 1920 Banbridge, Volume 1, page 129.

Birth of Constance Henrietta Gribben Oct – Dec 1921 Banbridge Volume 1, page 122

Death of Constance Henrietta Gribben, born 1885, Oct – Dec 1921, Banbridge Volume 1, page 90.

There was another Beggs family living close by to “your” family in 1901. I’d assume they would be relatives.

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Quilly/Quilly...

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Quilly/Quilly...

I also found a short summary of Samuel Beggs will on the PRONI website (The original has been destroyed):

www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/will_calendars.ht...
Full Abstract :
Beggs Samuel of Quilly Dromore county Down farmer died 16 December 1927 Probate Belfast 12 March to Frank Hamilton J.P*. and Gilbert Kerr farmer. Effects £52 14s.

*JP stands for Justice of the Peace, indicating he was had certain official functions eg authorising search warrants to the police.

If Elizabeth Ann Gribben was given up for adoption, there probably wouldn’t be any paperwork in 1921. Formal adoption was only introduced in the late 1920s and prior to that you just handed the child over. There would normally be no formal record of either the handover or the name change. It’ll be very tricky finding her since there are no censuses released after 1911 in Ireland, and Wilson is a very common name.
Great!! Thank you so much for your help. My family has never known my grandmothers side of her family. My grandmother Constance Henrietta Gribben-Lacy moved to the states after meeting my Grandfather. She went back to Ireland several times trying to find her sister. She told us that her sisters name was Elizabeth Anne Gribben, born around 1884 in Banbridge, Down Ireland. I am trying to find information on her to. The story goes that she was adopted and her surname was changed to Wilson and my Grandmother was raised by her Uncle and Aunt in Belfast, N. Ireland.

The uncle Samuel Beggs married Eliza Sara M’Evoy in 1874. Their marriage was registered in Banbridge 1874, Volume 11, page 225. If you order a copy of their marriage certificate that should establish a family address in 1874 as well as giving you his father, so taking the research back another generation.

There’s a birth registered for a Henrietta Beggs in Belfast Jan – Mar 1887, Volume 1, page 289.

Constance and David’s marriage is registered in Lisburn July – Sept 1920 Volume 1, page 1039. The marriage cert should give her father’s name and his occupation, as well as her address at the time of the marriage.

You can get photocopies of both the above certificates for €4 each from GRO Roscommon, provided you quote all the above details and Roscommon don’t have to do any searching. www.groireland.ie/

This looks like Constance in the 1911 census, staying with her uncle and his wife near Dromore:

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Quilly/Quilly...

The name on the census form looks to me like “C Henrietta” but has been transcribed on the computerised version as Henry. She was described as a niece rather than a visitor, suggesting she resided there permanently at that time. Orphaned?

She wasn’t staying with them in 1901. (They are just with their own daughter).

Births, Deaths & Marriages in Northern Ireland after 31.12.1921 are not on line. You need to search the records in GRO NI (or pay them to do it for you). www.nidirect.gov.uk/gro
I am trying to find any info. I can on Constance Henrietta Beggs-Gribben. I know that she was alive from 1885-1921. She is my Great Grandmother. I also know that she married David George Gribben on 24 Sep 1920. She also had 2 daughters Constance Henrietta Gribben, whom was born in Banbridge, Down, Northern Ireland. She also had another daughter named Elizabeth Anne Gribben, whom was given up for adoption. The story goes that she was put up for adoption, because Constance H. Beggs-Gribben died giving child birth. I was told that Elizabeth's surname was changed to Wilson.
So I am looking for any information on Constance's Parents names, where she lived while growing up, Siblings? and anything else I can find on her. I have looked everywhere and could only find her marriage info., and when she had her eldest daughter Constance Henrietta Gribben-Lacy which is my Grandmother. Thanks in advance.

Hi again Amelia,
The story of my gr-grandfather, John BEGGS, has been a mystery to my mom and her family since the 1920s. My grandfather, Allen Beggs, never knew his father and I was only able to track this branch of my family starting w/an old newspaper article I found online. I feel like I've found a lot since that article started me off. I would love to contact you to find out more. Perhaps you have some information that can help me find out what happened to him and I can help you answer some questions as well.

I do know that John Beggs met my gr-grandmother (Helen Downey) while he and Helen's brother served together in WWI. John Beggs was court-martialed and sent to prison in June 1919, he was 27. He married Helen Downey in NY 2 days before he was sent away. He served a 6-yr sentence at US Peniteniary in Leavenworth, Kansas (1920 census). The last thing I know about John was he was paroled and lived in Kansas City, KS in 1924. My gr-grandmother, Helen and grandfather, Allen Beggs though lived in Brooklyn, NY in the 1930 Census- Helen had re-married.

I have some official records, mostly federal prison records unfortunately, about John Beggs including parents (John and Essie) and info including sisters Maggie and Sarah, correspondence with cousin, James Beggs in Kansas City and more.
Please contact me. Thanks, Kathy

Book of James Beggs Sr. born 1617 in Ireland...descendants from this James...

I have a copy of a book called "Descendants of James Lemen and Mary Ann (Crow) Beggs"

Compiled by Their grand-daughter
Virigina Sinclair Catron
1947

I am at a loss as to why my Beggs grandfather had this book, and am having a hard time seeing how it ties to my Beggs family. Anyway! This line comes from James Beggs Jr. and Elizabeth Hardy Beggs, James Beggs Jr. having been the son of James Beggs Sr., born in 1617.

If I can help someone else out - I am happy to do so!

Debbie

When I was in Larne a few years ago I visited the cemetery in Kilwaughter. There are numerous Beggs families buried there. Undoubtedly there would be many Beggs in any cemetery in the Larne area.

I was also very fortunate to visit the cemetery at Kilwaughter castle. It is massively overgrown with brambles and grazing goats. The stones are all in significant disrepair, most lying flat on the ground. Kilwaughter castle is adjacent to a current working farm so appears to be private property. You will have to talk around with locals to see if you can get access.

Please stay in touch with what you find. I don't know that I was able to find any absolute connections, even though I have confirmation that my Beggs line was in the Larne area in the early 1800s.

Good luck.

Tom Beggs
tombeggs@aol.com

Do you have a list of the cemeteries and churches you visited in County Antrim? I'm planning a trip there and am also searching for Beggs family. Any help or suggestions of where to go, would be greatly appreciated.
