Hi Marianne,

Here is info I have found on the Peter Begley family through census & cemetery records:
Peter Begley 17 Jun 1838-17 Jan 1925 (dates from tombstone)
Bridget Agnes Kinney/Kenney 5 Aug 1843-16 Aug 1925
Children with approximate years of birth calculated from age listed at time of census:
Michael, b abt 1868
Rosa, b abt 1869/1870
Thomas, b abt 1870/1871
Bridget, b abt 1872
John, b abt 1872/1873
Mary/Margaret, b abt 1874
Celia, b abt 1876
Winnie/Wynia, b abt 1878
Peter, b abt 1875
Ellen, b abt 1879
James, b abt 1882
Catherine, b abt 1883 (wife of Malachy Owens)
Annie, b abt 1884
Eddie, b abt 1888

Michael, b/o of Peter, he lives with the family in 1875 & 1885 KS state census, prior to his marriage to Rosa. Michael & Rosa married between the 1885 KS state census and the birth of their son James b 1886. From the tombstone of Michael & Rosa:
Michael Begley 1841-1896
Rosa Begley 1862-1930
Their children through census records:
James 1886-1965 (from his tombstone)
John b abt 1888/1889
Leo 1890-1951 (from tombstone)
Michael L 1895-1953 (from tombstone)

Burials in St. Patrick cemetery, Atchison, KS:
Peter Begley & Bridget Kinney/Kenney
Michael Begley & Rosa
James Begley
Leo Begley
Michael L Begley
There is a Thomas Begley 1878-1894 who is also listed on the headstone for Peter & Bridget. They did have a son Thomas, but all census records show his birth to be 1870, not 1878. So, I'm not absolutely sure who this Thomas b 1878 is. I'm planning on calling the cemetery to see what I can find out about this Thomas.

There is also a Patrick Begley buried at St. Patrick cemetery, dates on tombstone are 17 Mar 1844-24 Feb 1923. This is the Patrick I believe to be brother of Peter & Michael.

You can find pictures of Begley tombstones on FAG under St. Patrick cemetery, Atchison CO, KS.

Julie Spencer

Hi Marianne,
Ironic that your father was a James Matthew! In tracking James Matthew Begley, s/o Peter & Bridget, through census records - 1905 he is in the KS state census for Atchison, KS, age 24, single. 1910 federal census he is in KC, KS, married to Elsie C (I really think this is Agnes), with James being 28 and what looks like 18 for Elsie, but I think more likely she was 16. Children in the household in 1910 are Mildred C age 1 9/12 and she is listed as 'step-daughter' to James, and also there is Paul C who is 2/12 age and listed as son. For James and 'Elsie', they state they were married '0' years so married in 1910 and Elsie further states she has had 2 children with both living. In subsequent census records, both state and federal, the wife of James is Agnes and she is always 12 years younger than James. Other children they had were Mary, Agnes, Martha, James, and William. I'll be looking to see if they had more children when the 1940 census is out.
On some of the public member tress on Ancestry, I have seen Michael Begley and Rose Luckey as the parents of Peter Begley but I do not have first hand documentation of that information. Do you have Peter Begley and Bridget Kinney/Kinney in your database?
Julie Spencer

Julie,
This is very informative. I am just shifting through all
the details but think we have a connection. It is too bad that it isn't easier to match up the Irish connection or
that we haven't photos to compare.
Thanks for sharing all this info.
Sincerely, Marianne Begley (Bagley) from Seattle and connected to the Cregganebane Begleys in Armagh, Northern Ireland.
Judy,
The Begley family that I am researching is Peter Begley born 1838 in Ireland and lived in Atchison, KS. He married Bridget Kinney/Kenney, Bridget also born in Ireland. They do not appear to have married in Ireland as Bridget arrived later than Peter. I believe Peter had 2 brothers that also lived in Atchison. Michael, who married Rosa, with both Michael & Rosa dying in Atchison. There is also a Patrick Begley who is buried in the same Atchison cemetery as Peter & Michael. The only connection I can make with Patrick being a brother of Peter & Michael is that when Patrick died in 1923 in Kansas City, MO is the informant for his death certificate was James M Begley who was a son of Peter & Bridget. I have not found Patrick in census records yet. His date of birth on the death certificate is 17 Mar 1843. Patrick is listed as a widow, name of wife not listed, and names of parents not known with both parents born Ireland.
Several of the sons of Peter & Bridget lived in Kansas City, MO. James Matthew Begley 1881-1938 who was married to Agnes and John Begley 1872-1942 who was married to Katherine or Catherine. Both James and John lived in Kansas City, MO. By the 1910 federal census, James and his wife Agens are living in Kansas City, Wyandotte CO, KS, and by the 1920 federal census they are living in Kansas City, Jackson CO, MO.
I don't know if any of this information helps, there may not be a connection between the Begley family I am researching and the one you are researching.
Julie Spencer

We'll be able to share more information that way.

It would be my guess that there very easily could have been Thomas born as a sibling to our James (who could have a son or grandson by the name of Thomas . . . ) - between Ellen (born about 1797)and John (born about 1801) or quite likely between John and James (born in 1816) since there were 15 years between John and James.

Yes, I believe that I do have a photo of my elderly James Begley. Do you have any photos of him perhaps as a younger person???

Looking forward to sharing more on our very possible common ancestor.

Jeanne

WOW!!!

I must say that it is my very strong belief that my ancestor in the Begley family and your ancestor in the Begley family is highly likely to be one and the same.

We have John as the brother that James Begley (who was born in 1816 in Longford Ireland) came to be with in Brooklyn, NY.

We have a woman by the name of Ellen (who we have for some time believed was an older sister of James) who was born apparently around 1800 in Ireland (according to the 1850 census), but according to her headstone about 1797. Ellen was living "at home" in James' household in 1850 Ottawa, Illinois.

The Thomas, that you refer to, who married the Breslin girl had to be of at least the next generation from our James', as according to a biographical writeup on our James in the "History of LaSalle County", which is where Ottawa, Illinois is, "The day he was three weeks old his father was buried and he was left to the care of his mother, who died when he was sixteen years old." According to the information that I have the Thomas that married the Breslin girl was born in 1842.

Our James named one of his daughters Rosanna.

James' brother John named a daughter Bridgit.

There appears to be much genealogical information for us to share!!!!!!!!!!

If you wish you may contact me via email at jjpratt45@gmail.com

Jeanne

John J; Ellen; Rosanna who may have been a sister or cousin that came to John,to the states. There were siblings back in Longford, Thomas who married a Breslin girl. First name was unreadable. I also have written names Michael, Bridgit and possibly Bernard. They appear to be siblings of James father - but possibly James himself.
According to an older cousin he was told that the other son stayed on the family plot of ground and with him a sister and the rest had to go out on their own. Typical Irish fashion. He believed one was transported to Australia's Penal Colony during the Famine and James and another in a bit of trouble that precipitated his exit to the states.

It appears that we have a possible connection, as my ancestor James Begley was born in Longford, Ireland. He came to the USA in 1839 where he met an older brother in Brooklyn, married there and later moved to Ottawa, Illinois.

Do you know the names of any of James' siblings?

Jeanne

Sorry for the long delay. I've been out of the country.
James Begley son of James Begley and Mary Conry/Conroy born 15 Aug 1815 was with my ancestress Mary Elizabeth Brady and engaged to be married. They met aboard ship (name not known)and the ship sank. Mary believed James to have been drowned as they were picked up by a few different rescue ships. Not long after reaching America she found herself with child. She raised the child (James Brady) by herself and not until the child, my ancestor was older did the tell the story. We are not sure if he was born 1839 or 1840, she did not record the dates until many years later in her bible. The information she did know was that he was from Aghaboy Longford. He was with a sister (name unknown) that was older and coming to meet a brother who was established in Brooklyn. There was a cousin to James she met years later and found out that he survived the shipwreck and had married and moved to a farm near Ottawa Illinois Since James had a family she didn't feel it right to disrupt his life. Does this tie into your family?

I don't have any indication that they were Indian. Robert's ggrandmother was Winiferd "Winnie" Sizemore who was Indian.
Leslie L. BEGLEY b: 22 Jul 1897 KY d: 22 Oct 1964	I don't have anything else on him, because our line is that of William's brother, Henry.
