I can't help with the obit, but it looks like we're researching the same family. I have James Behling's parents as Harold (1896-1962) and Lorraine.

Harold's parents were Fredrick (1872-1941) and Alvina. Frederick's parents were William (1845-1910) and Wilhelmina Behling. That's as far as I've gone on this family.

I have a nice picture of Fred and Alvina with their kids. Are you interesting in sharing info?

I have a Ferdinand Behling. I don't know where he was born nor much else about him. He was married to Augustina Litz or Arndt. They came to the U.S., Philadelphia, in about 1853.

They had a son Franklin Oscar Behling, with whom my good information begins.

If this could be the same person let me know and I'll get you the rest of the information I have on him.

Thanks, Mike Bonneville
Hi Pam,

I'm delighted to hear from you! What a wonderful story told by your mother about Gertrude.
How might I be of help to you? As I mentioned in my query, I have some research data on Gertrude Behling - from her 1857 birth date on through to her 1932 cemetery records, and on Christian Behling from his 1848 birth date on through to his 1924 cemetery records. Because you've been doing this family research for some time I'm sure you have already collected most all the info such as their marriage date, the 1890 City Directory listing, and the 1900 through 1930 Federal Census records. If not, please let me know and I'll be happy to send you all the data I have. I hope by comparing notes that we can find answers to a number of unresolved questions that you have concerning both of them.
I am particularly interested in establishing Gertrude's maiden name (Freckman/Frickman/Frackman). I have found records that I believe pertain to Gertrude that have these three different surname spellings. For example: the 1870 Fed. Census lists her as 13 years old living in a boarding house in the 1st Ward, Milwaukee, along with her two brothers, Herman and Bernhard Freckman. She was working as a domestic servant. If the Freckman(n) surname is correct, then I have found her listed in a ship's passenger manifesto as arriving in the Port of NY in 1866. US Federal Census Records note that she was married twice, with Christian Behling being her 2nd husband. Was her 1st husband named Proderman(n)? I have found a marriage date for Gertrude Frackmann performed on 13 July 1879 in Milwaukee County. Could this be Gertrude? If so, that would explain why she can't be found in the 1880 Fed. Census, she would have been enumerated under her new married name.
The 1900 Federal Census records note she was the wife of Chriss Behling and the mother of 3 children: Mamie age 9, Henry age 6 and William age 2. She and Chriss had been married 11 years (22 August 1890). The 1910 Fed. Census notes she had been married twice, widowed once, and was the mother of 7 children, 4 of whom were still living on 16 April 1900. Do you have any info on this first marriage and family?
So many questions; but enough for now. Please let me know if and how I can help you.

Many regards,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Christian and Gertrude were great grandparents on my mom's side. I have been researching on and off for years, and could use some help. My mother remembers Gertrude fondly, but was an infant when Christian died. She always says that Grandma Gertrude had china blue eyes and used to give her Hershey's kisses when she was a child. It will be nice to correspond with you.

Hope we can connect!

Pam

Re: BEHLINGS-Pittsburgh,PA/Milwaukee, WI - Connection

My name is Todd Behling of the Pittsburgh PA Behling's. Albert was my great grandfather by his second wife whose name was Minerva. We think that Albert emigrated at a young age from Langenhagen Germany in 1872 that his middle name was Frederick and that his father's name was August. I know he was still alive and living near Pittsburgh in the late 1940's. I will check for the exact date. Albert and Minerva had one child, my grandfather Roy Albert Behling born in McDonald PA in I think 1914. Roy Albert Behling had 2 sons with Amelia Bell Named Roy Albert Behling Jr. and my father Richard Lee Behling born in 1942. Hope this helps us connect. I would love to know more about our family history in Germany since we don't know anything about it.

At one time this Dageforde man was learning his craft. He did become Pastor and was in Wi and I think some of his family went more west. Mn and Nebraska Wa. and Oregon,Kansas. Canada. some were in Buffalo new york. Mo. Ohio, Texas.
The Dageforde family has a book out now. I wonder if any of this family were able to obtain a copy. There had been a big reunion there as well.
I would love to learn more from this family.

Hi Pam,

I just came upon your 14 April 2007 query on the Behling Message Board seeking any information on Christian Behling (b. 3-20-1858 d. 6-19-1924).
I've just begun family genealogy research on the Behling family. Christian and Gertrude Behling would have bee gg grandparents on the paternal side of the family. I've discovered some information on both of them (1890 on) that you might not have in your files. I'd be happy to share what I do have with you. It sounds like you have some data on Gertrude Behling (Frickmann) that I would love to get from you. Can we compare research?

Hope to hear back from you soon.

Bill

I posted the previous email so long ago I forget how the Behling family fell into the picture. But, I have a Augusta, Bertha, Joanna Stimm (and others) that were the half sisters of my gg-grandfather Albert Volbrecht.

I will have to look up the letter that I used to post this, but one of the sisters married a Behling, which lived in CA until her passing.

Have you seen the surname Stimm in your research? If so, I have information from those in Wisconsin. Also, if this is the same Augusta and Bertha, then they had a brother William that has a interesting and sad background.

I have Volbrecht's in my family living in Wisconsin. I was interested in your message because my ggrandfather had six sisters, two lived in California.

Did Anna have a brother? If so, what year was she born? I have a note from 1967 saying the age of his sister in California at the time of her death.

Re: Behling from Wisconsin

Vivian,
I know of a Minnie Behling, the daughter of Henry Behling and Maria Bieler or Bealer, who was born April 20 of 1886 or 1887, in the town of Fremont, Clark County, Wisconsin. She married Elmer Austin on July 17, 1907 in Clark County.
I have tidbits of information on Henry; born 1853 in Pomerania and died 1944 and was buried in Edgar, Marathon County, Wisconsin. Henry’s father, Karl Friedrich Behling died March 5, 1897 and was buried in Nasonville (southwest of Marshfield), Wood County, Wisconsin. Henry’s mother, Gustina Retzlaff was born and died in Pomerania.
I have two pages copied from a 10-year-old published family history (not Behling family) that includes some information on Henry Behling’s family but much of it may be incorrect. According to the author, Minnie’s children by Elmer Austin were William and Alvina, and her children by Thomas James Hennessey were Vivian and Thomas and that the elder Hennessey adopted Alvina. Perhaps we could trade information so I can correct my files.
Jenni
Hello fellow Behling Reachers,

I am trying to find out if Anna (Vollbrecht) Behling who married Frank or Franklin Behling. (it has been both on the us census) According to the census they immigrated in 1905. They lived in Cedarburg, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin in 1920. It just lists Anna and Frank, no children. I have Anna's birth as 1866 and Frank/Franklin 1861. Anna died in Los Angels California in 1950. Anna's parents are Frederick Vollbrecht and Bertha Hartwig. Anna had two sisters that I know of Bertha m. John Dillon and Augusta m. August Runge.
If anyone can help me with this part of my line I would be very greatful.
Thanks
Darlene

Augustus V. Behling b. 1812

Augustus V. Behling had a daughter, Henrietta Behling (b. 15 August 1842 d. 3 March 1901). She immigrated to America and married a Henry August Weigand from Darmstadt, Hess, Germany. They lived in the Upstate NY area. I am a descendant of Henry and Henrietta.

I don’t have much on Behling side of the family, but I have been told that they were also from Germany. I’ve also been told that they were of royal blood. I’m not sure how much is true about being from Germany and of royal blood.

If anyone has any information, you can contact me at abnoba12@yahoo.com
Thank you
Jacob Weigand

Grulke-Behling family in Germany

Hello,

I am looking for information on the Bertha (GRULKE) BEHLING family from Germany. A distant cousin gave me some pictures of the family. Her mother in-law was Martha (GRULKE) FROEMMING(1897-1989), who lived in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Her parents were Gustav GRULKE (1867-1943) and Augusta WALDOW (1878-1943). Gustav was the son of Fredrich GRULKE and Hannah TIMM (Hannah and Fredrich never left Germany). Fredrich was the son of Christian GRULKE and Christina SCHUENEMANN. Martha corresponded with a Bertha GRULKE BEHLING from the 1940's through the 1970's. She refered to Bertha as "Cousin", which leads me to believe that Bertha's father and Martha's father Gustav were brothers. Gustav and Augusta came to the United States in between 1888 and 1891. They came with his brother William GRULKE (1859-1946) and his wife Martha PAGEL(1860-1946) and their family, and his sister Bertha Grulke(1875-1928) who married Gustav Hoefs (1867-1947) here in Wisconsin, U.S. In her obituary it states she has 2 brothers and a sister in Germany (in 1928) and in her brother William's obituary in 1946, it states he is the last member of his immediate family, meaning the siblings in Germany have died, or contact was lost with them.

Anyway, here is the scant information I have gathered on Bertha GRULKE BEHLING from the back of the photos.

Bertha had a son Walter BEHLING born August 8th, 1911, he married a woman Frieda? ( German script is hard to read by the untrained eye) who was born May 30th, 1914. They had a son Heinz Behling who was born March 3rd 1936, and a daughter Flornezia? who was born November 12th, 1934.

Heinz Behling married a woman May 1963 in Hallendorf, Germany. They had a daughter Christine who was 14 in 1979, making her born in either 1964, or 1965.

One of the pictures is marked "Russian Zone, Mechlenburg, Germany June 5th, 1961"

Here are 3 of the return addresses we found on the envelopes.

Berta Behling in Vodow Post Kroslin
Krs. Wolgast
Mecklenburg Russian Zone Germany

Absander: Bertha Behling, Voddow Rost Kroslin
Kreis Wolfgast
Sowjetische Zone

Abs. Bertha Behling, Voddow
Post Kroslin
Kreis Wolgast
Russian Zone

Thank you,
-John Uhlman

What other information do you have about Gertrude? She was my great grandmother, but know that she had children Marian, Henry, William(died about 9 yrs. old?)and perhaps a Grace Behling. Please let me know anything you would have about Gertrude or other Frickmann relatives. Thank you! Every little bit of info helps.

My Gertrude Frickmann was married to Christian Behling. They settled in Milwaukee, WI. I know that they both came over from Germany. Gertrude around 1862 and Christian around 1882. Please reply with any info you may have.
