Looking for any information on thi sman. It si my husbands line and I just discovered him last night!
This is what I have so far.:
He may be the Gustav Hermann Fritz Behnke b. 10 Aug. 1898 in Hannover, Hannover , Pruessen, Germany
(Familysearch.org/ German Births and Baptisms 1858-1898)
He was married to Caroline who, according to US 1880 census was only 20 years old with an 8 year old daughter (my husbands great grandmother). I wonder if it was common for such young girls to marry. Gustav was 37 years old. In a later census the two oldest girls are not listed and they were 13 and 11 years old. Were they married off? I know that my husbands great grandmother married at 23 so maybe they were let out as servants or something?
1880 census has the following children:
Ottillie (my husbands GGrandmother) 8 years old
Selmer 6 years old. (She married Lawrence Edward Cummings)
Olger 5 years old
Paulina 4 years old
Gustav oops, forgot to write age down.
In 1895:
A Gustaf H. is married to a Mary, I believe it must be another Gustaf since the only child that matches is Gustav H. and of course, Mary is a different woman born in Ill, not Wisconsin as Caroline was.
In 1885:
J.H. Behnke is 45yo
Caroline is 25yo
Olga 9yo
Pauline 4 yo
Gustaf 6yo
Ernest 5yo
Bertha 2yo
Edward 1yo
(Ottillie and selma aren't listed. They would be 13 and 11 respectively).
If you are related to this group, I would love to share any information!
Note on Matilda Cummings!
Many people have put Ottillie Behnke on their charts as matilda Cummings. Somewhere along the line someone mistook th enickname of Tillie to be for Matilda. Cummings was the surname of her sister Selma. Tillie Behnke Hallett lived in the Anoka Stae Assylum in MN for at least 26 years and died there. You can see her grave at findagrave.com.
