do you think we could be related?! Maybe if you pass some names along I can see if we have any ties. I can't remember if I mentioned that my great grandfather Behrends had many siblings..one a sister Wilhelmina Behrends Schippler..she came through Ellis Island..married to a Fritz Schippler. They resided in Disko In.
I would love to find some new info soon. My grandpa was just diagnosed with lung cancer and it is progressing quickly.

I live in Canada, My father came from Denmark, this is not a common name, certainly German in origin, but back 100 years ago there was lots of border shifting and immigration even within Europe. I've done some reserch on this name and have come up with people ranging from a Nazi war criminal, to some European Jews! Pretty strange, how my family ended up in Denmark is a mystery, but I'm still looking. Will keep looking.

I have traced two brothers and a sister who came over at different times. Let me know who you have and we'll try to fit them in the tree somewhere! Sheila

I have this Henry Behrends nailed down solid now. Henderikus Klaas "Henry" Behrends was the second child with this name of Klaas Sypkins Behrends [1828-1911] and Jurndina "Dena" Janssen [1828-1910] Klaas was born in Groothusen, Ostfriesland, and Dena was born in Suurhusen, Ostfriesland.
Children of Klaas and Dena were:
Berend R. Behrends 1853-1913
George Klaas Behrends 1855-1930
Benjamin Klaas Behrends 1858-1949
Anna Behrends 1861-1931
Henderikus Klaas Behrends 1864-1865
Kate Behrends 1866-1948 [my great grandmother]
Henderikus K. Behrends 1870-1956
Tonjes Klaas "Tony" Behrends 1872-?

Your Henry Behrends was born 23 January 1870 in Prairie Creek Township, Logan County Illinois. He married Mary or Maria Henrietta Etzen or Itzen or Eetzen [I found all three spellings in the Hartsburg cemetery!]on 26 September 1893.
They had three children:
Carey C. Behrends 1896-?
Benjamin E. Behrends 1905-?
Henry Edgar Behrends 1908-?

I have photos of Henry and Mary from a 1947 Behrends family reunion.

I would welcome any additional information on this branch of my family.

I can't find any connection to Lorans, My paternal grandmother was De Klerk (de Clerque) and was from French ancestory and some French royalty. If you need it I can send a scan of a letter that gives reference to these various French family names. My father had found these names in a search of his roots done in the 1960's. The Weiland name is definitly of German origin I believe the Nassau area (Frankfort) which was controlled by the House of Orange,(Holland) My second cousin "Freiherr" M.N.M. Weiland lives in Didam Holland but he has no other knowledge of the family than I have. My father, Jan Nicolaas Weiland was born in Holland May 11 1905 his fathers name was "Freiherr" Matheus Nicolaas Weiland and his mothers name was Anna Catharina Wilhelmina de Klerk (Clerque) All born in Amsterdam Holland.
If I can be of any further help reply to my email (nweiland@chartertn.net)

Re: BEHRENDS, WILBERS FAMILIES OF Ostfriesland, Germany & Nebraska

Hi. I am also a descendant of this family. Henry Behrends and Dadena Regina Wilburs's daughter Etta married John Siebolts. John and Etta were my great great grandparents. My records have the Americanized versions of their names, but I figure they started out as Heinrich and Johann or something similar. Henry and Dadena Regina are buried in Diller, Nebraska, if that helps. Etta is also buried there, as are several of her children. It is possible that one of Etta's daughters is still alive. She is my grandmother's aunt, and she said the last she knew, she was. I will try to find out for sure. Feel free to email me at marylynnwarren@gmail.com.
Mary Warren

BEHRENDS, WILBERS FAMILIES OF Ostfriesland, Germany & Nebraska

I am seeking to connect with descendants of Hinrich Behrends and his wife, Dadina Regina Wilbers, who immigrated to the United States. Their children were Etta, Bernhardt, Wilhelm, Anna and Hiemke. They are believed to have immigrated to the United States in 1893. A Nichlaus Wilbers (Dadina's brother) also immigrated with his wife Antje and daughter, Bernhardine. I have reason to believe at least some of the Behrends family descendants live in Jefferson County, Nebraska.
My possible connection to this family is through the Wilbers. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Wilberts. I have found a connection in Ostfriesland, Germany, who believes the Wilbers family name may have been "Wilberts" many years ago.
More information available upon request.
Thank you.
Deb (Hilmer) Jahn

I believe your Henry Behrends was a son or grandson of Klaas Sypkins Behrends who immigrated from Groothusen, Ostfriesland [which belonged to Hannover] in 1864. His sons all americanized their names; Behrend became Barney; Tonje became Tony, etc. Their sister Katie was my great grandmother. There is a lot about them in the history of Logan County.

My ggrandmother Kate Behrends married Hye Leesman.
I cannot get much information about either. I found a census listing Kate as Katie and her father as Klaas but no additional information. I know there are hundreds of relatives in central Illinois--I went to a Behrends family reunion in the 1950s and saw tons of people. Anyone have any information? Kate's sister Anna supposedly married Hye's brother Henry. They lived in Mason County Illinois. Kate died about 1949.
Sheila Bundy
skbundy@sbcglobal.net

I have come up with the Behrends' nane in my tree. It seems that when my ggrandAunt Hiskea Penning came from Weener,Ostfriesland,Germany, which is near Hannover. She came to Iowa- to the Ben Behrends place. (possibly prior to 1885) My curiosity was hightened when I saw that she has a son also named Ben (Enno) Behrends. She married a man with the last name of Lemhaus, but I am wondering if first she married Ben Behrends. Any Info would be appreciated

Behrends

My grandfathers step dad was Albert Behrends was born in 1846, died in 1921. He married my great grandmother Adelbeid Neumann a widow. She and Albert Behrends had two children John born 1878, died 1950 and Emma Behrends Oetken born Nov 4 1885 died Jan 6, 1972. I know that they owned a farm somewhere in the Edwardsville area because my great grandfather and my grandfather Edward Neumann farmed in the area. They were Lutherans there are very old records in the church. I can ask my Father (he's in his 80's) the name of the church if you want to find out more about this line. Adelbeid Neumann Behrends was born in Hanover Germany and migrated in 1873 she arrived at New Orleans and went up the Mississippi to St Louis. My father also has a sister who is in her 90's who may be able to help you. Perhaps you have all of the info about your family and this is redundant. My email is karenharvill@hotmail.com
