Hi Beirnes, I recently discovered my Beirne connection!!! is Maria (Mary) Beirne mother of Winifred Carney (father, Michael Carney) ch. 02 Dec. 1838, RC Roscommon, Ireland.
Thought you all might enjoy a letter for Mother's Day. I've come a long way since this letter started my quest for my Boy Scout genealogy merit badge 2 yrs. ago.
TRANSCRIPTION OF AUNT MARY'S LETTER TO FAMILY 12/16/76
"McGarry Stronghold: Sharkey, O'Rourk(e), Carney, Coll, Beirne, Egan several times.
There are only 352 in Frenchpark, Roscommon, Ire. 1890. Martin and Marcus live in the old farm house on the widest Rd. & most beautiful Kings Highway, Point Kingsland, Frenchpark bottom of Lake O'Gara, ringed by the Curlew ? Mtns. I can understand why Papa like the Orange Mtns., NJ.
Mama lived at the bottom of the hill where a little Grey Church, black trim was. My Mother's mother went there every morning. I met a girl named Murray in the French Hoop. N.Y.C., who knew her. Grandmother was Winifred Carney Coll. Mama, Mary Elizabeth Coll - McGarry born 4/22/1872.
Papa, Martin Wm. McGarry, born, Mar. 18, 1872. His sisters & brothers: John, Patrick, Bridge(t), Marcus, Mary, *Kate (Kathryn), James, *Martin, Michael, Winifred, Cecelia, *Nora. All went to England but 3. *(they went to US)
His Mother, Cecelia Murray McGarry related to Andy Murray & Joe Murray at Ashland Ave. Main St. (Restaurant & Tavern) NJ. His Grandfather Michael Murray, Frenchpark and Paris, France, a Professor at French Univ. We also had a Gr. Grandmother from Aberdeen, Scotland.
All the Coll's and Carney's hail from a little town 25 miles so. of Limerick, town Bruree on road from Limerick to Cork.
Mike Noonan, Papa's cousin, came to America together & settled in Guilford, Conn. At their Grandmother's sister's house, Mrs. Gilson, then they went to Bridgeport, Conn. then Orange,NJ. Mike Noonan built all the Catholic Churches in Conn. and acquired money.
De Valera's mother was a Coll from Bruree on Limerick to Cork road. She was said to have great guidance for her son, born N.Y.C. When widowed she returned home to Buree.
Many fought and died for 800 yrs for the Freedom of Ireland. Aunt Kate (Catherine Murray McGarry McMorrow) went to Guarantee Bank 140 Broadway N.Y.,collected Irish Bonds to pay their Debt. to America. You hear that only Finland paid.
I sought our family tree (crest?). They said never heard McGarry, I said you are dxxx right. They are all dead fighting for your freedom." But I found one. Our motto is in Gaelic ?To Live without Fear. Coat of Arms is: Snake, Ancient Lizzard, Lion, 4 Acorns then the motto in Gaelic.
Pappa was quiet, like Martin, Flo and Tommy Casserly. When I saw where he came from I understood him. I was always by his side. At the age of 9, he and Mike Egan worked for 2 cents from sun up to sun down on an English owned Estate in Ireland. Mike Egan came here and lived on Jefferson St. with us. Lily O'Rourke married an Egan, Mike's nephew in Lisbiddy, Ire.
Best Love, Aunt Mary
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
