Looking for long lost relatives who may help to further my search for elusive relatives back in Eire!

Seeking information on the Beirne/Byrne family.
Mary Beirne in Roscommon

I have traced back to my great grandmother, Mary K Beirne, born in (about) 1895 in Roscommon, but have lost her after that. She moved to the US, not sure when, and married Nicholas Downs in 1923. I have no information on her other than her husband and children and would find any information on her and her family interesting. I have also looked up the family a bit and know that there is a lot of information on the web about the family, if anyone could refer me to a good site, I would appreciate that also.
Thanks

He and his familu arrived from County Lonford in 1847 and settled the lot between Fred Schell and the Derroughs. 1847 was the year of the typhus epidemic and his wife and one daughter had died on the ship coming over. John Kennedy arrived the same year from Belfast and stayed with his uncle at Quaker Hill until he married Margaret O'Biern. They took up land across the trail from her father. A few more Irish Catholics joined the O'Bierns. The Dolans settled about a mile to the north shortly after, and by the 1860s Michael Moran and John Manley from Altona had settled close by.

Anything interesting or hupefully a contact?
The above O'BEIRNEs and MANLEYs are my children's ancestors.

Noreen
noreens@sympatico.ca

Actually I live in the San Francisco area. My dad, Bryan Patrick Beirne, emigrated to Canada in 1949 where he was the senior entomologist for the Canadian government, and later, a university professor. I moved to the US 20 years ago or so. My Dad wrote the book The Family O'Beirne which has a bunch of info about various Beirne's around the world. It's not a father-son-son kind of tracking but more of a look of people with the name who did well around the world. There's quite a bit of info in it about T.C. Beirne, but not much more than you might find in his published biography. "Long Tom" Beirne was the Thomas Beirne, b. 1810, who was Thomas Charles and Edward (your ggggrandfather's) grandfather. So called because he was more than 6 ft tall. That's pretty much what I know. TC Beirne's book "My Life" gives a good picture of their youth but, sadly, doesn't mention brothers and sisters etc. (except later, in passing) by name. Men!

Yes I'm from the Australian branch. I'm descended from Edward Beirne (Thomas Charles Beirne's younger brother) who was a police constable in Queensland - b. 1868 - d. 1940.

It is interesting you mention O'Beirne because I read something recently which said that Henry O'Beirne may be an Uncle of Thomas Charles Beirne. Henry was quite a figure in Melbourne/Victoria in his day. I don't remember the exact details just thought I would put is aside until I could prove a link. Does this mean anything to you?

You mention Thomas (Long Tom) - what does this mean? Sounds like you have interesting data!

I gather you still live in Canada?

Cheers
Kate

Not sure yet that Thomas ("Long Tom") is an ancestor but the odds look good. My Beirne family line goes back to a William O'Beirne but so far no good date on him. His son John O'Beirne, died 1847, and John's wife Jane Marks, died 1846, are the first certain dates I have. I know EVERYONE from them on down. :-) I also know quite a bit about one of Thomas Beirne's sons, Thomas Charles Beirne. Are you part of the Australian family? My Beirne's stayed in Ireland until 1949 when my Dad emmigrated to Canada. Happy to share. Tell me what you know and what you want to know. Cheers.

Hi! Many thanks for your reply. I no longer feel like I'm at a dead-end.

I am a Great-great-great-great grand-daughter of Thomas Beirne (1810). Where do you fit in?

Are you following the Dignan Beirne line? The Dignan name has kept cropping up but I kept disregarding it. Great to know Kitty Dignan is related by marriage to my people.
How much do you know regarding dates (birth, death, marriage) for these people? If so, are you able to share?

Lovely to hear from you!

Cheers
Kate

I am also interested in the Beirne's from Ballymacurley. Here's what I can add to what you have posted:

John Beirne and Catherine (Kitty) Callaghan had eight children. They were married when John was 24 and Kitty was 16.

John Beirne's father, Thomas Beirne (born 1810 as you note) had a brother named John who was married to Kitty Dignan. John and Kitty's nephew and respectively were John and Kitty (above)--they were introduced by their respective uncle and aunt.

Our Byrne/Burns/Beirne DNA Project now exceeds 160 men tested. Among them are a half-dozen Beirne who either live in Roscommon or have roots there. Rather than one distinct sept, there may be three DNA lines--not at all uncommon among Irish clans.
But in the intersts of general sept history, and to determine whether there are ties to similarly named groups in Sligo and Donegal, I want to flesh this out with more tests. Please contact me if you known of a male Beirne with proven roots to the Roscommon area who will be willing to help when I visit there in May. A simple cheek swab is all that is involved. Thanks.

I have traced back to Patrick Beirne (born 1839) from Roscommon who married Onny Healey and had 4 boys:-

Patrick (circa 1880)
John James (1880)
Thomas (1878)
Martin (1882)

I have very little information about John and Thomas as they moved from Roscommon to America where they died.
Patrick and Martin both moved to England and I have traced most of the connections to these 2 brothers.

I am a decendent of Martin (who on arrival to England changed his name to 'Byrne' due to being illiterate).

Anyone with any more information please let me know.

Susan and Jim,

The following is information on Charles Beirne. At the time of Griffiths Valuation, the Beirnes listed as living in Mullen were Luke, James, Thomas, John, Owen, William and John. Charles had a brother named Michael, also. Any help you can give regarding school records for this family will be much appreciated.

The emigrating ancestor, Charles Beirne, was born February 5, 1857 in Mullen, near Frenchpark, Roscommon County, Ireland according to his biographical record published in the History of Bergen County New Jersey, 1630-1923.@ He is the son of Thomas Beirne and Catherine Burns. He died on July 1, 1934, Manhattan, NY. Charles "was educated in public and private schools of his section" according to the History of Bergen County New Jersey.

Roscommon Beirne Families

Previously I reported that my DNA project has two members with surname Beirne, and the one who lives in Roscommon does not seem to be related to the other Beirne (who lives in the USA but has a paper trail to Roscommon) or any Byrne or Burns in the project. A recent Trinity College Dublin study of Irish surnames, however, provided the DNA of three men named Byrne--two from Connacht and one from Ulster--that match that of my unknown Beirne. It now appears that there at least two distinct Beirne lines in Roscommon and, judging by our experience with the Byrne surname, probably many more.

Origins of Beirne Sept

A recent study in the American Journal of Human Genetics entitled "A Y-Chromosome Signature of Hegemony in Celtic Ireland" theorizes that many of the clans of northwest Ireland may well descend from the semi-mythological Niall of the Nine Hostages. The theory is based on a modal DNA common to the region. In my Byrne/Burns/Beirne project, eight of us are very close to this modal, including the one Beirne who has a paper trail back to Roscommon. It has long been suspected that the Beirne sept and the Burns families of Sligo and Donegal are linked. The origins of the Beirne sept may well be to the north. But until additional Beirne males are tested, we can't be sure.

Their daughter Bridget (O' Connor) Cronin was my Great Grandmother. Bridget's granddaughter, Catherine Shannon, is my mother, who emmigrated to Providence RI from Roscommon in 1925. My mother will be 99 in April. I would be interested in hearing more about your study. Thank you, Nancy Cassidy

I believe was born in the parish of Boyle and lived in the Ballymote area where she was a midwife until leaving in the late 1940s to join her daughter Una (from her first marriage to another Beirne - possibly brother of Thomas) in New York where she died in 1957.

I amat a dead-end over my g-gm Catherine (Kate) Beirne or Barden, of Longford. The family story is that she emigrated to the Boston area with 3-4 children. Her husband worked for Scotland Yard. Story sounds similar to yours. I have little info but would desperately love to compare notes with you or anyone else with info. My grandmother Josephine Beirne never talked much about herself or her family. Possible connections to others in NH also. Thanks.

Dear batjac,

I am not sure, but I think Timothy might have been my great-great grandmother's brother. My g-g grandma was Honora or Kate Byrne Torsney. She sponsored two of Timothy's children to come to the US and settle in Cincinnati, Ohio. There are a lot of the descedents (?) still living in the area. In fact my one cuz, Gary Burns, does a lot of work assisting the priest at the church I go to. I think Frank was single and came to the US at one time and couldn't stand one of his nieces. There is another male that went to England. I think I found it on LDS sight. I should tell you I am Peggy Floetker and live in Cincinnati. I live on the west side of town and this is where a lot of Irish are mixed in with the Germans. My g-g grandma got married in 1866 or 1867 to Peter Torsney of Sligo. Her parents were John and Mary, I think. She died around 1878 before her nephews got into Cincy.

Peggy Floetker

Thomas BEIRNE, b. Ire. ca.1800, wife Eliz. Flood

Looking for Thomas BEIRNE, born probably around 1800 somewhere in Ireland, died before 1861. His wife was Elizabeth FLOOD, born probably around 1802 in Ireland, died in Lawrence, Mass., USA 1887. Elizabeth, at least, lived in the Manchester area of England in the mid-1800s. Thomas may have died in Ireland.

Their known child (there were probably more) was John BEIRNE/BYRNE/BURN/BURNS, b. about 1839 in Ireland, married Margaret SCANLON, dau of John Scanlon, in Chorlton (Manchester area), Eng., 7 April 1861. This couple had at least 2 children (Thomas and John) in Chorlton, then immigrated to Lawrence, Mass., USA in 1869 aboard the SS Palmyra under the name BYRNE. Traveling with them was an Edward Byrne, 38 years old, possibly brother of John, but not traced since. It is not known when John's mother Elizabeth arrived in the US.

John and Margaret mostly used the spelling Burns in the US , where they had four more known children (Letitia, William, Margaret, & Elizabeth). John d. in 1902 and Margaret in 1905. both in Massachusetts.

It is quite possible that this family spelled its last name in even more different ways - I have so far seen the four variants mentioned above

Any information on this family will be very welcome. Thank you!

My mother Etheldreda (born in 1924) was the youngest of their children, other siblings were Elizabeth, Nora and Thomas who died in infancy. All the girls spent some time at I believe the Sisters of Mercy convent in Ballymote. My grandmother Margaret, who was a midwife had previously been married to another Beirne (possibly brother of Thomas) with whom she had 4 children, Una, Peggy, John James and Dan.
Our Burns/Byrne/Beirne DNA project shows three distinct lines of Beirne--one from Frenchpark, another from Elphin, and a third possibly from Strokestown. But only five Beirne have been tested, so this conclusion is very preliminary. If anyone is interested in a DNA test to help sort out the Beirne sept, please contact me offline.
Paul Burns

We now have almost 100 members in our Byrne/Burns/Beirne DNA project, and we hope to post a pedigree for each. To date about 30 members have posted, and researchers may wish to review them on the"Patriarchs" page at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/b/byrne/ to see if there is any connection

I have a lot of Sharkeys from the Frenchpark area. Mary's are numerous, but finding the right one, if I have her, is another story. There were a number of Cunninghams in the same area. A lot of Sharkeys (and no doubt Cunninghams from the Frenchpark area) ended up in England. If you have any more specifics, I might be able to help you.

Jackie

Hello there,

I am trying to do a little research into my maternal great grandmothers side of the family. She was Mary Sharkey born in Frenchpark Roscommon around 1854 ( I think she may have added a few years to her age so that she was 21 when she married) She went over to Lancashire and married Patrick Cunningham in 1875 and they had a large family. The children were called Charles, James, John, Kate, Margaret, Peter, Thomas, Winifred, Edward, George and William. Just wondered if you know of any connections or leads I can follow? Her father, William Sharkey and her husband Patrick Cunningham are both listed as farmers.Thank you Siobhan

Beirne of Mullen, Ireland

Searching for relatives of Charles Beirne, father: Thomas Beirne; mother: Catherine Burns. Charles Beirne was born in 1857 in Mullen according to his article in the History of Bergen County New Jersey, 1630-1923. According to Griffiths data base, the Griffiths survey for the County Roscommon was conducted in 1857-1858. The Beirnes living in Mullen at the time of the Griffiths survey were Luke Beirne, James Beirne, John Beirne, Owen Beirne, William Beirne, John Beirne and Thomas Beirne, probably Charles Beirne's father. In the 1901 census, there are three heads of household living in Mullen: James Beirne, Winifred Beirne, and Bridget Beirne. I suspect that those Beirnes living in the town of Mullen, Parish of Tibohine, Barony of Frenchpark, County of Roscommon, are all related to Charles Beirne. Does anyone have any information about the Beirnes who lived in Mullen, Ireland?
