Robert Beith - Born Largs, Scotland 1825. Died January, 1889 in Leavenworth Hospital

My family recently came across a deatailed account of the Beith family which came from Largs, Scotland and settled in Illinois (and later Kansas and Oregon). It was written by Jennie Beith, the daughter of Robert Beith and Emma French. There has been a lot of misinformation floating around regarding Robert Beith. In fact there were lies published about Robert in a history book about Wallowa County (obviously the publisher didn't know they were lies).

Essentially at some point a story started that Robert had abandoned his family/children right after his wife died and was never heard from again. In fact one story goes that after Robert and his family came to Oregon he immediately up and left and went back to Kansas in 1882. In a previous post I wrote some about this issue.

In the newly discovered story, Jennie Beith writes about when Robert left. For any researchers who'd like to know what actually happened, in Jennie's own words, I will be uploading this story to ancestry.com when it's transcribed.

Jennie writes that Robert went back to Kansas to visit his daughter, Jessie, in late 1887. The journey was difficult for him and he became ill and died in a hospital.

According to hospital records Robert Beith died in January of 1889 at the Soldier's Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas. I have contacted the cemetery there and Robert is apparently not buried in their graveyard.

If anyone comes across information about where Robert might be buried I would love to hear from you! My family would like to know where he is laid to rest.

My email address is reamstm@comcast.net

Thank you.

John Russell/Jane Beith family - William, Hannah and John A. Russell of Illinois

Searching for information about this family. John Russell married Jane/Jeanette Beith in Scotland. Jane's parents are William and Barbara Beith. Jane was born 1821 in Largs.

The family settled in the St. Charles, Illinois area. Jane and John Russell had three children - William Russell, Hannah Russell and John A. Russell.

John and Jane Russell both died abt. 1856/57, leaving three young children.

I don't know much about them. Hannah Russell was adopted by a family called "Bull", William Russell moved to Iowa at some point and lived in Newhall, and John A. Russell became a well known prosecutor in Kane County.

If you have information about this family, please do let me know! Thank you.

My direct email address is reamstm@comcast.net

Re: William and Robert Beith Scotland to USA

Robert Beith was still in Wallowa County, Oregon in March of 1888, according to a Bureau of Land Management document. The document shows Robert Beith getting a land patent on 3/3/1888 for land in the Wallowas. Robert Beith was admitted to the Soldier's Hospital in October of 1888 in Leavenworth, Kansas.

At the point Robert left his home in Oregon, the vast majority of his children were grown and married. Alice Beith Balter was married and had children. Jessie Beith Shively was married and had a son. William Beith was an adult and may have been married. Jennie Beith married Murat Blevans in August of 1887, at the age of 22. Clara Beith married John Austin Blevans in June of 1888, three months after this land patent was signed, at the age of 19.

The only one of Robert's children who wasn't an adult by the time Robert went to the hospital for treatment was Walter Gray Beith, who was born in 1873, making him 15 years old.

Searching for Beith family information

My line is from Robert Beith, born Largs, Scotland in 1825. His father is William Beith, Mother is Barbara King. Siblings are Jane/Jean Beith, born 1821, and James Beith born 1823. The family came to America around 1850, went to Illinois.

Robert married Emma Sarah French and had 6 children: Alice Beith (Balter), William Beith, Jessie Beith (Shively), Clara Beith (Blevans), Jennie Beith (Blevans), and Walter Gray Beith.

Searching for any and all information possible about this family. We've got unidentified photos, etc. that we'd like to figure out. I want anything you've got very much!

If you know anything about them, or are descended from Robert, James or Jane, please contact me as soon as you can!!!

reamstm@comcast.net is my primary email, tess.reams@live.com works as well.

Re: William and Robert Beith Scotland to USA

I am descended from Robert Beith, who came from Largs, Scotland and was married to Emma Sarah French. Robert was a civil war soldier. He fought with the Union Army in Minnesota and elsewhere.

From parts of 1888 to 1889 Robert Beith was being treated for chronic rheumatism and bronchitis at the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Kansas. His daughter, Jessie Beith Shively (wife of Albert Shively) lived in El Dorado, Kansas at the time and is listed as his nearest relative. Residence subsequent to discharge at the is listed as El Dorado, KS.

The original post states that Robert abandoned his children after his wife's death and was never heard from again. I wasn't around 110 years ago so I cannot speak for those involved with this, for the Beith family who was alive at the time, or for Robert himself.

But I do think two points should be noted:

- Prior to Robert returning to Kansas, which had been his home for many years, he was living with his wife and children in Wallowa County, Oregon. Many members of my family are from this region, and I've heard stories about the bitter, deadly, snowy cold winters and springs in these parts of the state. And we know for a fact is that he was being treated for chronic rheumatism, which is a painful disease that is much worsened by cold, wet weather.

- Also, the fact that Robert was clearly being discharged and was going to return to El Dorado where his daughter (Jessie) was living suggests that he was indeed heard from again.

I see there aren't too many Beiths around, so I thought I would add mine to the list.

Janet Beith (Beeth, Beth) married Hugh Johnston in Irvine Ayr in 1765. Their three known children are Mary, b. 1771, Janet, b. 1773 and Hugh, b. 1775, all in Irvine. I have a lot of information on son Hugh onwards.

That is all I have for the Beith board...I know nothing else about Janet Beith. Just thought I would add it in case anyone can connect with Ayr.

Sorry, Jessica, all I know about my ggg-grandmother is in the original message. Her marriage record and her children's baptismal and death records give her name variously as "Stewart Beith" and "Stewart-Beith", which could mean BEITH was her surname, or it could be ? STEWART from Beith. She was married in Largs and probably born there, but the parish records are incomplete and I could find no record of her birth. Have hired a researcher, if she turns up anything to connect our lines I can let you know. What is your e-mail address?
