I've been trying to find the same, Belans from eastern Europe. My grandfather, a Belan, was born in 1910 either in NY or in Russia. Both his parents were Ukrainian, immigrated & had children born in the US, I believe, but other than my grandfather's death certificate, I have no other info. I can't find anything re: immigration, parents/siblings, add'l family, census info, etc. like they just disappeared and that family history went with him when he died in 1966.

Please let me know if you get any leads and I'll do the same!
Thanks!
-lisa
Thanks Cathy for replying. Just to start things off my family, and I are not knownly related to any other Belan's in the U.S. or Quebec. My grandfather Emil Belan had emirgrated from the Ukraine in 1909, along with his brother Sam, and some cousins with the last name of Burlak to Ellis Island. Sam had settled in Avon, Conn. but did not have a family here. He did however leave a wife and 3 kids back in the Russian Ukraine. I Believe my kin are still in East Europe, and not from Louieville, Quebec. Anyways, Emil ended up in Detroit, Michigan, around 1919-1921 and stayed. Our blood is Slavic not French, at least since the early 1800's. Hope this helps us start a basis. Hope to hear from you on this.

Thanks, Chris

Wasyl Bilan

I was reading the posts and replies here and wanted to write to see if anyone ever came across the spelling Bilan or Bilon. My grandfather, Wasyl Bilan, came to the US from Jezepul, Austria (which was taken over by Poland but he considered himself from Ukraine) in 1909. Some of his papers spelled his name Belon and some spelled it Bilan. His naturalization papers spelled it Bilan, so that is the spelling I have been using. His son, however, chose to spell it Bilon. Wasyl had a brother Michael and John and a sister Olga. Their parents were Hrin Bilan and Theodozia Wowchuk. Any of these name ring a bell?

I really don't know much I have found some family in the SSI rolls but they were Johns mother's family. Still in Westmoreland Co. I can't remember the name right now but if you would like it I'll get it for you. Joan

hello! ironically my grandfather was named john belan too! differant one though. my grandfather came from czech. and his name was jan (john), your grandfather probably had a diff spelling of first and last name, due to he most likely came from czech or a diff country you can also search ship records, but many times names were misspelled on the ship records, but when you do search under belan, remember to always search under differant poss spellings of name, as in soundex. my grandfathers name was spelled differantly. when he came to U.S.it was shortened and changed to sound more american. shortened to belan. i found 2 john belans, both died in MI, (1) john martin belan, died livonia, wayne, mi, born 6/16/1914 died, 02/19/1994, another john belan, died pawpaw van buren mi, born 01/09/1890 and died 11/20/1981. no belans listed under john in pa that died around that time frame i found. name could have been spelled diff through. hope this helps a bit, if i find anything for you ill let you know, im searching my family tree also, good luck to you "cuz". dawn belan baker
