Hi Donna,

Some names are the same, but timing is off. I have an Alice Beland born in Kanses in 1898, my grandfather's sister, but no other names make any connection. Raoul Louis Beland was born June 1881 in Quebec to Arthur H Beland and Arzelie Nadeau. Sorry - I don't think this helps.

Hi! By chance do any of you have in your family trees, or any information on John or Jean Batiste Beland who married Amanda Gosslin. John and Amanda were French Canadian and my guess is they were born in Quebec. John was born abt Sep 1871 and died sometime between 1910-1920 in Fall River, Massachusetts where they were raising their family. Amanda was born in Jun 1874 and died in 1942 (not sure where). They had Rose Aimee b. 1897, Ovila (my grandfather who changed his name to John Bellanger) b. 1900, Henry (who went into the Coast Guard) b. abt 1904, Frederick b. abt 1909 and Alice b. 1910. I'm looking for their parentage and possibly what happened to the children? Some of the children spent time in an orphanage.

Thanks!
Donna

Does anyone have information on Godfrey Beland b.23 Dec.1879 in Québec. He married Sarah Bertha Curtis b. 21 April 1884,the 29 April 1903 in Fiche,or Fitchbay, Québec. I believe Godfrey's parents are Louis and Denige. Sarah's parents are David Curtis and Leila Libby. These families are listed in the 1901 canadian census in Compton. Godfrey was listed as a boarder. I'm trying to find out if they remained in Québec or moved to the states.
I'm related to Sarah Curtis. Her father David was the brother of my greatgreat grandmother, Philomene. The Curtis name was originally Casista.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
thank you.

Sandy

Jennie - I have been doing the same search. I will tell you want I have done and research I have yet to do. The most perplexing thing is I cannot find them in the 1900 census of Alpena County, which I have read three times, by first names as well as last. I also read the census for neighboring Alcona Montmorency and Presque Ile counties. I checked church and Alpena county records and talked with 2 others conducting the same search. I hope to visit Alpena again for some other research. Call me at 313-368-2148 if you want to compare notes.

Additional info - re: Louis Beland b.Illinois - m. - Annie Murray

Any help you could give would be great. The only information I know is that Louis Beland Sr. was born in 1869 somewhere in Illinois. He died in 1963 but I don't know where. He married Annie Murray around 1904 and they had two children named Thelma and Louis Jr. Louis Jr. married Eleanor. Eleanor and Louis Jr. died in California. I believe Thelma married a man by the last name of Willers or Wellers. Louis Beland Sr. and Annie are buried in Zion Cememetery in St. Louis, Missouri. Most of the information I have on this family is from tombstones and from the census records. The census information I do have is on Annie in 1920. In 1920 she was living with her new husband Nick Howard and Thelma and louis. I haven't been able to locate Louis, Annie and Thelma and Louis on the 1910 census or anywhere in Illinois but the census records I do have says they were all born in Illinois. Annie has ties to Cairo, Illinos but I have not been able to find anything on the family there and most of the records seems to be non-existent. I am trying to find out more about the Beland's in order to track the Murray line. Any help is appreciated.

Pam

The Balan and Balan dit Lacombe surnames are a different family line than Beland. The former originated with Pierre Balan in the 1600's, while the latter descended from Jean Beland of the 1600's. They were unrelated pioneer settlers of Quebec.

Jean's surname has also been recorded as Besland, while Belland, Bellant, Belant and a half dozen variations have been used. Some Beland and Belland names in the US come also from Sweden, Germany and Switzerland.

Louis Sr. I believe lived in Illinois
Louis Jr. Lived in Illinois when he was small but I am not sure where. I cannot locate Louis, Annie, Louis Jr. or Thelma on the 1910 census in either Missouri or Illinois. I believe Louis and Annie may have divorced sometime around 1910 so Annie may have been living under a different head of household. By 1920 Louis Jr. and his sister Thelma were living with Annie and a Stepfather Nicholus Howard in St. Louis Missouri. Louis Jr. married Eleanor. The last information I have shows Louis Jr. and Eleanor living in California. That is where they died.
I can't tie them together yet. Annie's father's name is suppossedly John but he couldn't be the same John that married Jeanette. Annie has a brother named Shelby or Sidney. I am not aware of any other brother's. It is possible there were other though and if the familes knew each other then who knows. Do you know who Jeanette's parents are. It is possible her parents are Annie and Louis if you don't already know her parents. I would have to look at the census information I have again because It may have listed that Annie only had two children which would have been Thelma and Louis.

Pam

I have noticed your name in the Beland Message Board, and I am wondering if you have any record of a Maxime Beland. He would have been born about 1843. Info I have puts him in Maskinonge Quebec. He came to Minnesota in about 1871 with his wife Philanise Lafond. They may have married after 1871. Hope you can help. If so, I can be reached at alliegro@isd.net
Thanks! Denise

I have managed to trace back to George Beland born c. 1804 in Rotherhithe, Surrey, he and a couple of his sons were bakers. He married Martha Bonwick in 1826 in Poplar. They had George, William, Louisa, Jane, John, Thomas, Maria and Martha. George's parents were William Baker and Catherine born around 1780 possibly but I don't know where. This line is proving very elusive and if any one knows anything about them I'd appreciate any help you could give.
Not to contredict you... but though it is thru that there is 2 totaly different families respectivaly named Beland & Balan... if you study Quebec records you will find some Beland who are in fact descendants of Balan... and some Balan who are in fact descendant of Beland...

The main reason this phenomena accured is due to the very close phonetic similarity of the 2 surnames...

And that is the reason when searching for any of those names, you need to check for all the variations and dit names of BOTH families, as you do not know until it is completed which one is the real roots or which one of them will have had their names wrongly spelled in records... to often people hit a road block that they can't solve, just because they are unaware of situation like this...

This is just a chance that we might tie these people in together. I have a John Murray (birth and death unknown) married Jeanette Agnes Beland. Jeanette was born 1902 and died 1979. They had 3 children.

Nancy

Clarence BELAND b. abt.1898 or 1903

My older Aunt has given me some info on Clarence Beland. I need some help in clearing something up!

Clarence Valentine Beland was born about 1898 and he married Veronica Healion. I believe Clarence was born in Illinois.

Another family record refers to Clarence H. Beland being born 1903 and marrying Marjorie Swartz. I have ordered birth certs but would like to clear this up sooner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't see anything on a census that would show they are brothers.

Nancy
