Gertrude J. Belanger, 1936-2009

Gertrude J. 'Gert' Belanger, 72, of Nashua, widow of Richard R. Belanger, and a longtime Nashua school teacher, died peacefully Friday afternoon, April 3, 2009 at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, surrounded by her loving family.

A native of this city, Gert was born in Nashua on October 7, 1936, a daughter of the late Dr. Paul E. and Gertrude (Lesieur) Dumaine. Educated in local schools, Mrs. Belanger graduated from the former St. Louis Girls High School, class of 1954 and earned a bachelors degree in mathematics from Rivier College in 1958.

Gert began her career with the Nashua School Department in 1961, teaching math at the Nashua High School on Elm Street and the former Spring Street Junior High School. She continued teaching at the new Nashua High School South until her retirement in 1999.

Mrs. Belanger was a communicant of the Parish of The Resurrection and was a member of the Voice of The Faithful of the church. Gert was a member of the Rivier College Alumnae and the Nashua Teachers Association. In her leisure time, Gert enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge group.

In addition to her parents, Gert was predeceased by her husband Richard, who was Assistant Superintendent of Nashua schools, who died October 16, 1976; a brother, Gerard P. Dumaine; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Raymond E. and Marguerite A. (Laliberte) Belanger.

Members of her family include her three children and their spouses, Susan Marie and R.J. Downer of Bedford, David R. and Joy Belanger of Hollis and Patty and Chris Gilson of Bedford; six grandchildren, Nathan and Katie Downer, Jack and Tim Belanger, and Andrew and Ben Gilson; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Vivian C. and Arthur Guerette of Vernon, CT and Estelle V. and Atty. Gerald R. Prunier of Hollis; her longtime companion, John Laquerre of Nashua; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Parish of The Resurrection, 449 Broad Street, Nashua, Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Louis Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend and are asked to gather at the church. Donations may be made in her memory to the Gert Belanger Scholarship Fund c/o David R. Belanger, 31 Rocky Pond Road, Hollis, NH 03049.
