Carmelle G. St. Hilaire, Lowell

Carmelle Gertrude (Belanger) St. Hilaire, 91 years old, a longtime resident of Lowell and Chelmsford, passed away at The Wolfeboro Bay Care and Rehab., Wolfeboro, NH., surrounded by her loving family on May 7, 2009. She was the beloved wife of the late Edmour A. St. Hilaire who died in 1971.

Born in Nashua, NH, April 12, 1918, she was the only daughter of the late Teraneus Louis and Alice (Caron) Belanger. She graduated from Nashua High School and attended Rivier College. Prior to her marriage, Carmelle had worked for her father at his grocery store, T.L.Belanger’s Grocery Store in Nashua as a Bookkeeper. She moved to Lowell after her marriage in 1941. Her husband had owned The St. Hilaire Oil Co. Inc, and The St. Hilaire Gas Stations and Car Washes in Lowell. The family enjoyed their summers at Lake Winnipesaukee and Seabrook Beach. Later, Carmelle moved to Chelmsford and enjoyed her winters in Pompano Beach, Florida. As she advanced in age, she lived with her daughter Louise and family on Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, NH for many years.

Carmelle volunteered for many years at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lowell. Jeanne D’Arc and later of St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford before moving to Wolfeboro. Carmelle was a very kind, sincere, sweet woman with a great sense of humor and a smile that could light up a room. She had a wonderful heart of gold.

She always considered her greatest accomplishments to be her family. She is so loved and will be sadly missed by all those who knew her. She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses, Denise Anne Hua and her husband Philip from Aurora, Colorado, Louise Alice Gaudet and her husband Charles of Wolfeboro, NH, Diane Marie Delorey and her husband Daniel of Nashua, NH; and one son, Paul Edmour St. Hilaire and his wife Susan of Westford, MA.; and a son-in-law, Francis J. Collins of Goose Creek, SC. She was the mother of the late Claudette C. Collins who died in 2007.

Known as “Memere” to her grandchildren who she adored, she is survived by Richard F. Collins and his wife Cindy, Kathleen M. Essegian, Major James M. Collins, US Army and his wife Amy, Dennis Hua-St. Hilaire and his wife Shannon, Phyllis A. Huang, Charles E. Gaudet II and his wife Heather, Christopher A. Gaudet, Jolie D. Gaudet, Jon-Ross M. Gaudet, Daniel R. Delorey IV, Krystle M. Delorey, and Scott M. Delorey and two great-grandchildren, Branson Charles Gaudet and Gretchen Katrina Collins.
