Re: Link between US UK Belascos

I have come across a family who were listed on censuses in London as: Blosque, Bolaski, Bolaskie, and their later descendents appear to have taken the name Belasco. I believe that they were descended originally from a pair of brothers called Julius and Lazarus Brylowski, who came here when their bit of Poland was taken by Russia. I think that their father may have been called Eleazer Brylowski, but I last had contact with their descendents some time ago and it is really testing my memory to get that name right!

I think many of the poor Jews were illiterate and had heavy accents so when census time came around it was pretty hit and miss as to whether the right name was recorded. Also when registering births, it could be dependent on whether the person recording it spelled it correctly.

These people are not related to the sephardic Belascos in London as far as I know.

Jan

Belasco, Belusko Petrosky, Patraskey, Partonski in Haleton or Fern Glen

I've been searching through the Belusko family board and I found this Belscco Board. Someone told me awhile ago that if I wanted to find my Petrosky, Partroski, Patraskey family. And I could really use help!

I'm researching Paul and Dora Petrosky, b. 1864 in Hungary. I have only been able to find Dora once and have never found Paul. The last name Petrosky is according to the handwritten name on an old photo of Paul Petrosky. Then it's Partoski in the 1900 Census in Black Eagle, Luzerne County, where Dora is listed as widowed and then Patraskey on one of their daughter's Social Security application.

From the Census records and from personal knowledge I do know they had two daughters, Mary and Anna. Mary, b. 1893, married a Strock (changed name from Strack). They lived in Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania on Locust Street and Anna R. b. 1896, married Walter C. Long of New York and they lived in Binghamton, Broome County, New York.

Either before or after Dora's marriage to Paul Petrosky, I am told she married Mr. Belusko (spelling) in Luzerne County. She and her husband Belusko had two daughters. It's possible they were Dora Petrosky Belusko's step daughters. I know one of these daughters was named Mary Belusko and she married Phillip Goldsworthy. They lived in Hazleton, PA and had one son. I am not certain of the name of the other daughter. Now I'm told that maybe they lived in Fern Glen.

I have run straight into that brick wall and I really could use all the help I can get! I am planning to post this to other boards also.

Thank you for any help you can give me.
looking for relatives of Theodore Francis Belasco

I am looking for relatives of my father. His parents were Paiute Indians Domingo Lucia. He had a sister Mary and 2 brothers Raymond and Felix. He was born in the Santa Cruz area of California and went to mission schools where his last name was changed from Velasco/Velascus to Belasco. Any help would be appreciated.

Philadelphia 1910, Lazer Belefsky b.1830

I am looking for info on the above name and family, living on South St, in Philadelphia on the 1910 census. His wife is listed as Edith, head of household is Rebecca Belefsky (daughter-in-law?), children Abraham 19, born in PA, Rosie 14, Ida 10, Sarah 7. They are listed as Russian/Lithuanian, arriving in USA 1891. I have reason to believe their original name might have been a version of Belawski (Bieliauskas), similar to Belasco, which is the name I am trying to trace.

Some of my ancestors (in the theatrical business) were said to have been friends of the well-known theater producer Dave Belasco. I'm wondering if anyone have information on him, which perhaps could help me finding out more about the friendship and my own ancestors. Hope to hear from you!

Please contact me at sigurd85@hotmail.com

The family settled in Phila, PA. He married into the Vederman family. This name could also be a modification. Any help or connections?

more on Belasco

Dear David: You have a famous name; you've probably been told this before. David Belasco was a well known producer and there is a theatre in NYC named the "Belasco". In addition, I recently saw a short documentary on TV about a rock group in the UK, also named "Belasco". If they discussed the origin of their name, I missed it.
Both of my paternal grandparents were born in Europe and when they moved to Philadelphia, they settled in North Phila. I know there was a Jewish neighborhood in South Phila, and a remnant of it may still remain, but I don't think any of my relatives were part of it. Some of the streets my grandparents lived on after they married were North Broad St, Columbia Av, & Conlyn St.
My grandmother's maiden name was Vederman, but it may have been originally spelled with a "W" in Poland and pronounsed as "v".
I am aware that there are other Belasco's in the Phila Metro area, but other than the descendants of my father and his two brothers, I don't think I'm related to any of them. Seems odd, doesn't it? The name is relatively unusual; you'd think there'd be some relationship.
It was good to hear from you, David. I'm looking forward to further messages from any who can shine more light on the family name.

Reply to Lisa Meadows: Yes, my grandfather was Jewish. My mother recently said he told her his name was Belasco in Russia. I dont know how it was spelled in Cyrillic, but it doesnt sound Russian. My mother thinks the family may originally have been Sephardic, emigrating from Spain in the 15th or 16th century (Inquisition?). My grandmother (Vederman) was from Poland, but said the ownership of her home territory was frequently disputed (sometimes Russia, sometimes Poland). Perhaps this was true for your grandfather also.

Monte: this is the first time I saw your message, which explains my delay in responding. My grandfather, Sam, was not in Vaudeville; he was a tailor in this country and also in Russia, where he practiced his trade in the army also, making uniforms for the officers (at least that's what I've been told). By 1913, he had two sons and was settled in North Phila with my grandmother. But, I must admit, it makes me smile to think of my grandparents as Vaudevillians.

Thanks for the quick reply Monte. I'm confused about your theater story. Your g-father, Arthur Belasco and his brother (another Belasco) operated the Belasco Theater, which was named after David Belasco. That's quite a coincidence. Is there a connection between your g-father and David Belasco? Look at the message from Clive; he also has a connection to the theater.

Thanks for the timely response, Clive. I have also thought that Sephardim could have emigrated anywhere after their expulsion from Spain. My g-father's family name was Belasco in Russia, and was not changed when he got to America. This is not typically a Russian name, so this is an avenue to be explored. Is your family still practicing Judaism? If so, Shana Tova. Perhaps sharing a quite unusual name hints at a connection between all (or many) of us, still waiting to be confirmed. Read the message from Monte. He has a family link to the Belasco Theater also. By the way, did you know there is a musical group in the UK by the name of Belasco?

Bernard: My g-father, Samuel Belasco was from Poltava (sp?) in Ukraine. He had a brother or brother-in-law (I'll have to check with my mother) named Lazer. Your mention of the name was only the second time I ever heard of it. Is Lazer an uncommon first name? If so, this is quite a coincidence. My g-father claimed his name was Belasco in the old country, but who knows how it was spelled? Some in the family think the name was closer to Belafsky or a reasonable facsimile, but I'm sure Sam knew better than anyone else what his name actually was. The UK connection is interesting but unknown to me. I think my g-father lived in Holland for a short time on his way to America. I'm guessing he stopped for a while to earn additional $ in order to complete the trip. I'll clear up the Lazer mystery as soon as I speak with my mother. Thanks for your input.

Nina
My Grandfather, Lazer Belasco, came from Balta in Russias, and was married to Yetta.
THe came to America in the late 1880's' and then settled at 2nd and Christian Street in Philadelphia.
When they left Russia, the name was Braslawski and in transit, they stopped in Liverpool for a year where the name reverted to Belasco.
On a visit to England a few years ago, we met with a family where the wife's name was Bobbi Belasco Perera-Mwndoza.
Her husband, Vivian Perera-Mendoza's father was the Rabbi at the great Synagogue in Manchester. We could not establish a relationship betrween our two names, however, I will write to them in Manchesdter and get whateveer information I can from Bobbi.
Good luck in your seaarch.

Re: Link between US UK Belascos

Nina, Sorry but there is no Ukrainian connection that I know of with my lot of Belascos. My paternal grandmother was descended from Sephardic Jews - a Spanish Jewish family which first came to Britain in either the 12th or the 15th century and settled either in York or in London. The earliest records I have seen show Belascos registered with a Sephardi synagogue in London in the 18th century. Of course, the Ukrainian Belascos could also have eminated from these early Sephardim. My grandmother was related to the American David Belasco, whose stories of Madame Butterfly and The Girl of the Golden West Puccini turned into operas. Good luck with your Ukrainian trail. Clive.

Well, Nina...they were probably cousins or maybe long lost brothers or nothing...but thank you for your reply. My grandmother's story of my dad sleeping in a steamer trunk in one of the droors from show to show, certainly made me smile. My grandfather, Arthur J., became a movie producer/director as he had moved to LA after leaving my grandmother in Idaho around 1913-15 when Dad was an infant. George Tucker married my grandmother and adopted Dad. I knew before they came out from New York on tour, Grandpa Arthur allegedly operated the Belasco theater on Broadway he and his brother set up...well, certainly a tailor would have been needed for costumes, etc...haha...good luck in your search.

I was just "surfin" the net and saw some interesting comments on the Belasco name. I'm one of those in
the Phila. area who you mentioned. My cousin in Calif.
has been putting together a family tree/genealogy.. We have
been able to trace a relative who was from Russia and came to the united states.....it sounds familiar. My grandfather
had four sons who all lived in Phila.

Please feel free to contact me.....even if there's no formal relationship, the common thread of the Russian origin is the same and that might help our search in the Ukraine.

Thank you,
Alan Belasco

Dear Nina, Your story sounds very similar to mine. My family came from the Ukraine. They were jews. Their last name was Belasco and settled in Philadelphia, where I was born. My grandmother was Polish her maiden name was Wilsen (changed to Wilson). When my father was born he lived on Cecil Street in South Philly. Let me know if any of this sounds familiar. Hope to hear from you.

Belasco Family

My step-father has posted info under the scooterlundy e-address. I took the Belasco name in honor of my grandmother, Lorraine Belasco, daughter of Louise and John Belasco. Lorraine died about 1934 when my Mom was 10...and we know very little about the Belascos. We found a John Arnot Belasco who was from Trinidad. His Mother was Fannie Rosalind Straughm, father Jabey Choate Belasco. He listed on social security application that he was Negro. Not sure that he is related to me...we have no Negroes in our immediate family...but it sure was a coincidence. I was told the the Belasco's were from northern Italy...that's all I know. I live in southern California, but the Belasco's were from the New York area. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Link between US UK Belascos

Does anyone have any info. about the link between Rabbi George Belasco who ministered at the Montefiore Synagogue, Ramsgate, Kent, UK in the 1910s 20s and Californian David Belasco of theatrical fame (not to mention Madam Butterfly and the Girl of the Golden West). Rabbi George was a brother of my grandmother, Rachel Simmons Belasco who died in London, UK in 1949. Some years ago, a distant cousin, Ed Belasco in Los Angeles, was researching these links, but I have lost touch with him. He and I are also reputedly related to prize fighter Aby Belasco. Any info. gratefully received. Thank you.

Link between US UK Belascos

Does this help Clive Simmonds?
My second & third given names are David & Belasco. I understand that my maternal Grandfather, Emanuel Simmons Belasco was 1st cousin to the David Belasco. It appears he was born in Finsbury, London in 1861 & died in Montreal 1904. He married Miriam Flora Lyons, who was born 1866 (where?) and died 1932 (where?) and is buried in Miami. They had both lived in London at different times but not necessarily during their marriage. He appears in the 1881 British Census and she moved there following his death. They lived during their marriage in Montreal, at least, & where My Mother was born. Simmonsseems to tie things together. Does this help?
