I don't know the whole story,but in the late 1800's Orvile Rogers and Wiley Belcher killed a man by the name of Elisha Howard,I think they had to stand trial, was aquited and them moved to Harlan County, and then changed their last names to Belcher. I know that don't sound right with Wiley's last name already being Belcher but that's what I got from the internet.

One other point - these boys were BORN April 22, 1878, and didn't leave for SA until (I believe) the 1880's

These gentlemen were brothers of my grandmother, Edith Augusta Bonham Belcher, who was born in Larling Norfolk in the early 1870's.

They were children of the Reverend William Belcher and Edith Charlotte Musgrave Bonham.
Rev Belcher was born in Bandon, Cork, Ireland, attended Trinity College Dublin, and served as rector/vicar at various parishes in Suffolk, the last being St. Margaret's Heveningham.

I have a lot more information on the Bonham/Belcher history, if you're interested, as well as some background on how these two lads ended up in South Africa.

You might be interested to know that they were grandchildren of Augusta, Countess of Stradbroke, from her first marriage.

Hi - Louise Bown is indeed still alive. She lives in Eugene, OR and is my beloved aunt. Her son Roger also resides in Eugene. I have not read her book on the Belcher family - however, she did a lot of research and put together a Bown family history (her husband, John's family) many years ago. It also has many, many family pictures and she traced the family back to a signer of the Declaration of Independence! She is quite a woman!

I am researching Henry Belcher (highlighted in yellow)
His son married a grandaughter of James Belcher and Ann Jackson (highlighted in blue) This couple are on your tree.

born4/24/1924 married 7/20/1947 to Dorothy Marion Brant.
If this is the right Dawson, He is in the Joseph Belcher
tree. Joseph was born 1831 in England. He died in 1871
either in Canada or Watertown, NY.

If you directly descend from Elizabeth and Col. Rogers (your G-Grandfather), yes, you are correct--you would not participate in the Belcher surname project. She was a home maker and was of the Baptist faith. Geneva was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Hi, I am looking for information on a JAMES CHURCHER who was born about 1780. He married MARTHA GILES in Streatham in 1803, and he possibly had a brother called CHARLES who also married in Streatham, in 1800 to MARY HUTCHERSON.

Does anyone have any info. on these events?

This is my brick wall as I have been unable to go any further back!

BLUEFIELD — Dwight R. "Rick" Belcher, 56, of 500 West Cumberland Road Bluefield, died Friday April 10, 2009 at a Bluefield hospital. Born November 10, 1952 in Bluefield, he was a son of the late Ernest F. Belcher and Vera J. Chandler Belcher. He was of the Methodist faith and had worked for K-Mart, retiring as assistant manager and later worked for Cole Nissan as a sales consultant. He was a member of the Bluefield Elks Lodge # 269 and Princeton Moose Lodge # 1521.

He is survived by sisters, Linda C. Hall of Bluefield, W.Va. and Deborah Y. Toohey of Bluefield; a brother, John E. Belcher of Falls Mills, Va.; nieces, Konstance Belcher, Cheyenne and Layken Belcher, Alexandra Toohey; and nephews, James Toohey, Zachary Toohey, Tyler Harris, Brian Stuart, and Jerry Compton, Jr.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday April 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Allen A. Hammond officiating. The family suggests that memorial contributions, if desired, be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 12110 Charleston, WV 25302, or the American Cancer Society, 1808 Jefferson Street, Bluefield, WV 24701. BLUEFIELD — Lillie Bell Belcher, 92, of the Blue Prince Road, Bluefield, died peacefully Tuesday evening, August 19, 2008 at The Maples Retirement Center in Bluefield. Born November 17, 1915, at Ada, she was the daughter of the late Emmett K. Thompson and Flora Lou Noe Thompson. She was educated in Mercer County and a member of the Greenview United Methodist Church, in Green Valley. She was a former employee for the Wilson Gift Shop in Green Valley and was a devoted homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, O.C. Belcher, Sr., a stepson, A.T. Belcher along with 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Survivors: Her children, Phyllis Hale and husband Charles of Bluefield, O.C. "Buck" Belcher, Jr. and wife Jean of Gilbert; grandchildren, Mark Hale, Scott Hale and wife Melody; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Sarah and Christopher; one brother, Charles Wayne Thompson and wife Shirley of Princeton; a host of nieces and nephews. In honoring Mrs. Belcher's request, a private visitation and service will be held with burial in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Courthouse Road in Princeton. The Belcher family is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.

HANOVER — Bucky Belcher, 66, of Hanover, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 9th, 2009, from Logan Regional Medical Center at Logan.Born on August 24, 1942 at Bluefield, he was the son of the late Odber and Lillie Thompson Belcher.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, A. T. Belcher.Bucky was a retired coal miner, and he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp, where he received two good conduct medals. He attended the Gilbert Church of God, and he fought a good fight and kept the faith so he could be in the presence of the Lord. He was a dedicated member of the Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department and worked with all area fire departments in the local area. He spent his retired life helping others. He reached out and touched so many people's hearts and lives. JERRY BELCHER
ACCOVILLE, W.Va. — Jerry Henry Belcher, 68, of Accoville, left this world unexpectedly Saturday, August 15, 2009, of injuries received during a home invasion.

Born March 18, 1941, at Accoville, he was a son of the late Henry Ward and Gladys Locey Belcher.

Jerry was a retired coal miner and had attended the Man Church of the Nazarene at Man.

Those left to cherish his memory include his twin brother, Mack Belcher of Accoville, with whom he made his home; two sisters, JoAnn (John) Avis of Kenova and Ruth (Billy) Graham of Dayton, Ohio; one niece, Kathy Graham of Dayton; two nephews, Johnny (Kathy Sue) Avis Jr. of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Billy (Kelly) Graham Jr. of Dayton; two great-nieces, Emily Autumn Graham and Jordan Avis; one great-nephew, Toby Graham, along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at noon Friday, August 21, at the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home at Man with Rev. James Kittle officiating. Burial will follow in Asbury Cemetery at East Lynn.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.

Evelyn Marie Lester 67 of Browning Fork section of Gilbert, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, July 19, 2009, from CAMC—General Division.

Born on September 20, 1941, at Browning Fork, she was the daughter of the late Wayne and Mona Hatfield Belcher.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Moss Hatfield, Sr.; her second husband, Billy Lester; and her brother, Amos Belcher.

Evelyn was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a homemaker and a member of the Browning Fork House of Faith. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to love and cherish her memory are: her six sons: Douglas J. (Drema) Hatfield of Browning Fork, Moss (Angela) Hatfield, Jr., of Verner, Timothy Wayne (Melissa) Hatfield of Wharncliffe, Jessie Keith (Lisa) Hatfield of Sprattsville, Marshall Eugene (Deborah) Hatfield of Browning Fork, and Benny Joe Hatfield of Browning Fork; her three daughters: Katrina Kaye (Kenneth) Cline of Newnan GA, Donna Jean Mounts of Browning Fork, and Kimberly Ann (Davy) Christian of Browning Fork; her 17 grandchildren; her nine great grandchildren; her two brothers: Verlin (Glenda) Belcher and Herman (Diana) Belcher both of Browning Fork; her three sisters: Ellen Hatfield and Allie Belcher of Hampden, and Alice Hatfield of Coal Mountain; and a host of other dear family and friends.

Friends called at the Freedom Full Gospel Assembly House of Prayer at Hampden on Tuesday, July 21st after 6 pm with a service at 7 pm.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 am at the church with the Rev. Diamond Carter, Rev. Lowell Smith, Rev. Denny May, and the Rev. Roy Lee Lester officiating.

Burial followed in the Carter Cemetery at Browning Fork.

Family and friends served as pallbearers.

She died March 7, 1921 in Opelika Lee County Alabama. On her death certificate it has her being 27 yrs old. She was married to a Joseph Carroll. My GG-grandfather was Stokely Belcher. He was the son of Elizabeth Belcher and Col. David Rogers. Because we came from a Female Belcher, but I still have a Belcher name, we are excluded from the DNA project, right?

Jesse Belcher married to Sarah Kellems

There is an old post from 1999 on this board regarding the children of Jesse and Sarah. Someone said they had documented 9 children for this family.

I have Jesse and Sarah as the parents of of Mary "Polly" Belcher, who married Douglas Sinclair in 1839 in Orange County Indiana. These families were all living near each other for several decades. I also have other Belchers who married into my Sinclair family in Crawford and Orange County.

By 1860 the Douglas Sinclair and Jesse Belcher families are all living in Harrison Township, Daviess County, Indiana and after the Civil War, my GG-grandfather Ransom Sinclair also moved out to this same area where he lived for 12 years.

Most of the Belchers are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery as is Mary Sinclair and a few of her younger children. However, Douglas Sinclair is buried over at Aikman Creek.

Could the person who has the names of Jesse and Sarah's 9 children contact me please to confirm that Mary is on their list?

I was at Rocky Mount Presbyterian Church Cemetery, near Plain Dealing, Bossier Parsh (county), Louisiana last week and I saw a tombstone for J. C. BELCHER, b. 20 Sept 1842 in Abbeville, SC, d. 28 May 1904 in LA (I presume in Bossier Parish, LA). His tombstone has "He served in VA under Gen. JEB Stuart" on it. I can't find a J. C. Belcher in the "Booth's Records of LA Confederate Soldiers" book, so I don't think he served from LA.

Can anyone connect J. C. Belcher to parents? Or know what his first name was? He married Elizabeth Gladney in 1875 in Bossier Parish, LA.

I would like to confirm that Mr. Belcher did indeed serve under Gen. Stuart--where can I go to find this information? Is SC a good place to start?
